WB6 Indicator Operation Manual
1. Introduction

1.1 System description

The WB6 Indicator has been manufactured for use with Griffith Elder digital load cells and primarily
weighbridge applications. Options on this system include a tally roll printer, large display and fob
activation system. The indicator will store a weight reading when either PRINT (if connected to a tally roll
printer) or STORE (if no printer is connected) is pressed. These weight readings may then be viewed /
printed at a later date. If a USB stick is connected into the USB port any weights stored will
simultaneously be stored into a .csv file on the USB stick that can be opened in Excel on any Computer.
The indicator will not store or print weights less than 200kg which when used in weighbridge applications
will allow the platform to be walked across when empty without registering on the indicator. Once the
indicator has detected more than 200kg, please refrain from walking across the platform as this will affect
the weight reading.

1.2 System Keys

The green button on the top left of the display turns the indicator on.

Once turned on, the function of each button is described next to it on the display.

2. Installation

2.1 General
The 100-240ac to 12vdc mains transformer supplied with the indicator is used to charge the unit.
Connect the 100-240ac mains transformer to the power point on the indicator unit and charge for a minimum
of 8 hours before the first use.
The indicator incorporates a lead acid battery and is fully functional whilst charging.
A battery charging circuit is incorporated in the indicator so only a 12vdc power source is required to re-
charge the internal battery.
Do not expose the mains transformer to water. The mains transformer is for inside use only.

2.3 Battery Care

Charge the battery for 8 hours before 1st use.

Recharge the battery immediately if the Low Battery warning is shown on the display.
If the weigher is to be stored, ensure the battery is fully charged prior to storage. Recharge the battery at
least once every month whilst the unit is in storage.
During normal use it is recommended that the battery is charged at least once a week, regardless of whether
or not the Low Battery warning is displayed. This will increase the service life of your battery.
Adherence to these battery care instructions will extend the life of your battery. As the service life of the
battery is directly affected by the care it’s given we offer a limited 3 month warranty on the battery.

3. Functions

3.1 Switching On
Press the green button for two to three seconds to switch the indicator on.

The display shows the Griffith Elder logo and the software reference number for 5 seconds.

When using the indicator for the first time the setup procedure should be followed as shown in ‘Setup &
Calibration Appendix 1’.If you are utilising the internal battery, when battery power is at less than 5% a
separate screen will display for another 5 seconds, before changing to the weighing screen.

3.2 Basic Function – Weighing Screen

The function of each button is described next to it on the display. Press the button to use the function.

Weighing screen:

• LIGHT: Turns the backlight on and off. The screen always powers up with the light off. In FOB mode
the light switch is found under OPTIONS then LIGHT turns the backlight on and off.
• ZERO: Zeros the load cells.
• OFF: Switches the system off completely. Hold for 2 to 3 seconds.
• MENU: Brings up a new screen with options to choose from.
• ON CHARGE: Indicates that the system is connected to a 12 Volt power source and is charging the
internal Indicator battery. If the display shows POWER and a % reading, the Indicator is utilising the
internal battery and is not connected to an external source.
• AXLE *: Shows underneath the digits when an axle weight is caught by the indicator

3.3 Weighing a Vehicle in BASIC mode

• Ensure that the scale shows zero before weighing. The traffic light will show green.
• Move the first axle / set of axles onto the weighbridge.
• When the weighbridge detects more than 0.2 Tonnes the display will show the weight and the traffic
light will show red.

03-0231 7
WB6 Indicator Operation Manual

• Once the weight is stable on the weighbridge, AXLE [No.] will appear underneath the weight reading.
• The traffic light will change to green.
• To take further axle weights, move the next axle onto the weighbridge within 20 seconds.

Once all of the axles have been weighed, the ticket may be printed or stored in the indicator memory
immediately by pressing the ‘SAVE’ or ‘PRINT’ button. Alternatively, if the weighbridge detects no movement
within 20 seconds, the axle weight readings will automatically be totalled and stored and the screen will show:

The printed ticket will look as shown to the left:

Please note: The ticket header may be changed if required. (See page
Record Number 11 12)
Time 15:35 Date 16/04/08 Once the ticket has been printed and/or the weight saved to the
AXLE 1 2.88 T indicator memory, move the vehicle off the weighbridge.

AXLE 2 4.11 T

AXLE 3 5.47 T

TOTAL 12.46 T

3.4 Weighing a Vehicle in NET mode

• Before the weighing operation can begin, a vehicle ID needs to be selected. ( this will associate that
vehicles tare weight)
• Once selected it will operate in the same manner as BASIC mode.
• The printed ticket however will differ. It will not show individual axle weights.
• First weight indicates the Total weight, Second weight indicates the Tare weight then the Net weight
will also be shown.

3.5 Weighing a vehicle in FOB mode

• Before starting, ensure that the FOB’s to be used are paired to the system under VEHICLE SETUP.
• This mode operates in the same way as NET mode. The main difference being that the tare weight of
a vehicle is selected using a remote fob which is designated to that particular vehicle.
• The traffic light will show red even when the weighbridge is at zero.
• The system will need to identify a FOB from its memory before the weighing can begin.
• Push and hold the fob button for 1 second, pointing the red LED of the fob at the receiver on the
large display.
• Note: Once pressed, the FOB has an 8 second timeout before it can be pressed again, should the
first press not change the traffic light.
• Once indentified the traffic light will show green. If a large display is also in use the fob number will be
displayed. The FOB number will also print on the ticket.
• When a weight is applied the traffic light will turn red. Once the weight is caught the traffic light will
turn green and wait for the next axle.
• Drive the vehicle on and weigh each axle giving the system time to catch each weight.
• Please note that the traffic light will remain green until the weighing process is complete even if the
vehicle has finished weighing all axles. The last axle can either be left on the weighbridge until the
process is complete or can move on.

If another vehicle is waiting to weigh, they must wait until the traffic light turns back to red and has finished
the print out before the system will recognise their FOB and start the process again.

After 20 seconds or TOTAL button pressed the TOTAL WEIGHT, TARE WEIGHT, NET WEIGHT and
VEHICLE ID will be shown, a ticket will be printed (if a printer is connected) and the data will be stored into
memory

Once the system has recognised a FOB it will not recognise another FOB until the process has finished or
the system times out. If the system times out the traffic light will turn red and the print out will read TIMED
OUT.

If the total scale capacity of the weighing platform is exceeded, the indicator will show OVERLOAD message:

If the capacity of any load cell is exceeded, the indicator will show an overload message for that load cell.
‘Weightel’ is the name given to the Griffith Elder Digital Load Cell.

In either case reduce the load until the indicator reverts to showing the weight reading.

3.5 USB data output

When a USB stick is connected into the USB port of the WB6 indicator, any tickets that are created and
stored within the indicators memory will also be copied across into a .csv file on the USB stick. This file will be
called GE00000.csv or similar.

The USB stick can be left connected to the system for as long as required and removed at any time. Records
will not be stored if the USB stick isn’t connected.

The records on the USB can be easily opened using Microsoft Excel or a similar program.

Griffith Elder have provided an excel template file with a one click function that can easily input all of your
records into an Excel spreadsheet that can then be saved for reference.

3.6 Importing USB data into the provided Excel template

• Open Excel.
• Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Excel Options.
• Click Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings, and then click Macro Settings.

• Left click the option that says Enable all Macros in the Trust Center settings menu to enable macros.

• NOTE: In Word 2003 the macro security options can be found under Tools/Macros/Security.
• Once macros have been enabled, remove the provided USB stick from the WB6 indicator front
panel and put it into any available USB port on your PC.
• Open up the included example Excel file. This will be called 08-0005-Template. (NOTE: the column
headings in this template where designed for FOB & NET mode so importing BASIC mode
records may cause unusual results.)
• Once Excel has opened this sheet, Left click on the first clear cell available ( In my example this is
cell A3 (Column A, Row 3))

03-0231 15

• Now left click the grey button at the top of the excel sheet.

• You will then be prompted to select a file. Navigate to the USB stick on your PC and select the file
named “GE000000.txt”

• Left click OK to accept, the data will now import starting from your selected cell position (Example
shown below). The net weight calculations will also be calculated within the spreadsheet to provide
you with extra data.

03-0231 16

3.7 Direct to PC Data Connection
Tickets can also be saved directly to a computer over USB. This is done via copying each ticket as it is saved
to the system.

This means the USB connection must be maintained at all times to ensure that the data can be downloaded
to the connected computer as it is entered.

3.8 Fob Activation System – Battery replacement

The RF Fobs have within them a special 3.6V lithium battery that is designed to give a long and trouble free
service life.
Should your Fob require a new battery, We offer the following notes to help you when replacing a
battery. The use of a Watch Maker’s Precision crosshead screwdriver is required.

Step 1: Remove 2 screws and prise open the fob from the sides.
Step 2: Lift the front of the PCB slightly with your nail or blunt ended lever.
Step 3: Lift the rear of the PCB slightly then prise out parallel.

Step 4: Caution. Do not attempt to prise out battery with a screwdriver or similar.
Step 5: By prising out the battery on its top rear edge, it can be removed and replaced with new.
Step 6: Pull out cord to allow micro switch and front battery clip to re-locate correctly.

Step 7: Push the rear of the PCB home. A blade may help in pushing the spring in front of bumper.
Step 8: From inserting a new battery a red LED should have been flashing every 5 seconds.
Step 9: Replace pull cord plug. Flashing should stop. Re-assemble front with screws. Test press.

With a new battery the Fob’s LED will light up when pressed firmly. It will time out for 8 seconds before it will
light up and transmit again. Always point the LED light towards the receiver box on the large display.
