I. BACKGROUND

This research was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic that broke out in Indonesia. The
activity started from a discussion with the university who experienced several obstacles in the
implementation of online learning. Based on the results of the Unma Banten Lecturer meeting,
lectures or learning English because online local content was agreed upon as a learning method
during the pandemic. This is done because the University in Pandeglang Regency, Banten,
Indonesia is still not available to open on the grounds that the pandemic is still spreading from July
to early October 2020. Therefore, face-to-face learning is not yet possible. This is also in line with
the Circular Letter of the Ministry of Education and Culture Number 4 of 2020 concerning the
Implementation of Education in the Emergency Period of the Covid-19 Pandemic which was later
strengthened by Circular Letter Number 15 of 2020 concerning Guidelines for the Implementation of
Learning From Home During the Emergency Period of the Spread of Covid-19.
Related to the challenges faced by universities which include classroom management challenges and
technical challenges in implementing online learning with WhatsApp (WA) media class groups, or
zoom meetings. Anwar Banten University (Unma) tries to identify the challenges faced by both
Unma lecturers and students in Pandeglang Regency, Banten, Indonesia, in learning English during
the pandemic. This is done because the online learning method is for the first time at the university
in question. Lecturers are also trying to find a way out to minimize the negative impacts caused by
the challenges of online learning.
Regarding the implementation of online classes, Carrillo & Flores (2020:2) explained that the use of
technology in supporting online learning depends on three pedagogical factors. Approaching
pedagogy which is the first factor includes student-centered learning, the role of lecturers as
facilitators, and knowledge integration. The second factor is the learning design which includes:
learning flexibility, learning according to the individual needs of each student, according to the
context, social, learning process, and the use of appropriate tools and technology. factor for three is
facilitation which includes clear expectations, appropriate questions, understanding and sensitivity to
cultural issues, providing timely feedback; constructive; and details, as well as a high attitude and
commitment from students.

V. FORMS OF ACTIVITIES
This activity aims to share knowledge about effective methods of improving English speaking skills
or skills for a better future. This activity can also add insight to students in their direct contribution to
English learning today. In this seminar, we try to bring speakers from institutions that have a major
contribution in education, especially in the field of English language education, so that from the
seminar, it is hoped that students can find out how to improve the effectiveness of learning English
during the pandemic.
