PROGRAM

COURSE SYNOPSIS

This course exposes students to the concepts and skills of effective public speaking. It
incorporates both conceptual and practical aspects of public speaking. Students are guided
through the process of selecting topics, writing speeches, and delivering speeches
extemporaneously and conversationally. The use of appropriate language and visual aids is
also emphasized.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of the course, students are able to;

1. analyse the aspects of public speaking (C4, A2)


2. prepare ideas effectively in different settings (C3)
3. present meaningful speeches based on the prepared outlines (C3, A2)

COURSE ASSESSMENT DETAILS


1. SPEECH ANALYSIS (20%) – Group Work
i. Report – 15%
The speech analysis (15%) is to be submitted in Week 6. In a group of 4/5, students
will analyse a video of persuasive speech based on a guideline on the aspects of
public speaking. Video and guideline will be provided in Week 3. The report should
be written in an essay form. A list of references should be included following the
American Psychological Association (APA) Academic Writing Style for referencing.

ii. Live Presentation – 5%


Each group is required to present an analysis (5%) in Week 6 for 15 minutes.
Another 10 minutes allotted for Q&A session.

2. INFORMATIVE SPEECH (30%) - Individual


i. Outline – 10%
a. Students are required to propose three different topics (Week 4) in which ONE topic
will be approved by the instructor. The chosen topic should be one of the four types
of informative speech (For example, speeches about objects, speeches about
processes, speeches about events and speeches about concepts).
*Please refer Chapter 15 from textbook.

b. A complete outline (10%) of the speech must be submitted in Week 7. A softcopy of


outline must be submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking (20%). A list of
references (at least 3 sources) should be included in the outline following the APA
(American Psychological Association) Academic Writing Style for referencing.
* A minimum of 3 copies of the sources (English Language) are to be attached to the
outline.

ii. Live Presentation – 20%


c. Present an informative speech (live via Webex) for 10-12 minutes based on the
prepared outline (20%) (Week 8-11). The speech delivery should follow the
organizational pattern and apply the aspects of public speaking skills.

3. PERSUASIVE SPEECH (30%) - Individual


i. Outline – 10%
a. Students are required to propose three different topics (Week 4) in which ONE topic
will be approved by the instructor. The chosen topic should be one of the three types
of persuasive speech. For example, speeches on the question of fact, speeches on the
question of value and speeches on the question of policy.
*Please refer Chapter 16 from textbook.

a. A complete outline (10%) of the speech must be submitted in Week 12. A softcopy of
outline must be submitted to Turnitin for plagiarism checking (20%). A list of
references (at least 3 sources) should be included in the outline following the APA
(American Psychological Association) Academic Writing Style for referencing.
* A minimum of 3 copies of the sources (English Language) are to be attached to the
outline.

ii. Recorded Presentation – 20%


a. Record a persuasive speech for 10-12 minutes based on the prepared outline (20%)
(Week 13). The speech delivery should follow the organizational pattern and apply
the aspects of public speaking skills

4. QUIZ (20%) - Individual


a. A standardised test will be conducted in Week 14.
b. The test is comprehensive. It will cover topics discussed and assigned to be read
during the semester and is based mainly on the prescribed text, Lucas, S.E. (2020).
