Topic: The Hobbit – Chapter 16 The thief in the night
Learning Objectives:
By the End of the lesson learners will be able to:
 LO1 – Identify and evaluate different themes in the novel.
 LO2 – Explore meanings of difficult words using the context clues strategies.
 LO3 – Analyze the characters.
Resources:
The Hobbit, Maps in the book, STEM LAB
Starter Activity:
Mid-map recalling previous chapter will be made by students. 10mins
Learning Activities:
1. The learning objectives will be shared with the students.
2. Pre-reading: Students will be asked to identify any figurative language or idioms.
3. While Reading: The students will be directed to listen to the audiobook via a speaker and

Learners make connections to self, text and world while listening.
As an assessment for learning (AFL), teacher will monitor group discussions and ask questions to
check their understanding.
4. Class Discussion: They will reflect on the writer’s presentation of ideas and issues, the
motivation and behaviour of characters, the development of plot and the overall impact
of a text. They will also reflect on the way the book was read in the audiobook.
5. Post-Reading: The students as well as the teacher will give their opinion, understanding
and analysis of the plot and character development. Students will create questions for the 10 Min
class to answer. The questions will be noted on the board and students will answer any
three of their choice in pairs.
Differentiation: The pairs will have mixed-ability students and the teacher will supervise each
group while reading and group discussions to see that even the working towards students are
contributing too. They will be given equal chance to present their opinions.
Teacher may assist the lower performing learners with the vocabulary. Any difficult vocabulary
will be written on the board.
Plenary:
The teacher will ask students to explain the difference in the way the audiobook was read to the 5 mins
way we normally read.

 Practice: They will be asked to write a description following the prompts.
Differentiation by task: An outline will be written on the board to help working towards
students. The vocabulary with will also be written meanings on the board as a word bank.

The students will be dictated the following short paragraph. 10 Min

The first week of August hangs at a very top of an summer, an top of an live-long year, like a

They will then be asked to correct the errors with color pencils themselves first. 5 Min
Then the teacher will introduce the concept of determiners by asking them what they thought
was wrong in them. 10 Min
The Determiners Table will be drawn in the notebooks by the students too. The students will help the
teacher in making sentences. (shown in picture 2.)

Lesson objectives will be shared. 5 Min
Learning Activities:
Pre-reading: Pre-Reading: Recap of the previous chapter. Learners will quickly brainstorm the 3 Min
main events of the previous chapter. They will be asked to underline all conditionals as well as
compound sentences used while reading takes place.
While Reading: The students will read the text silently. Students will be asked to identify 25 Min
important passages as groups. The passages will be read out loud at the end.
Differentiation Task: The students who struggle with reading would be encouraged to read with
the teacher constantly guiding them and developing the patience and empathy in others to uplift
their classmates.
Practice: Learners will sum up each paragraph in one sentence; sum up the sentences into one sentence;
and sum up the sentence into one word. Teacher will monitor the activity to gauge learners’
understanding. 20 min

Write the following on the board:
I Like to Swim or Swimming Is Fun: Define the Differences
Emphasize on the words ‘Swim’ & ‘Swimming’ and their usage.
Record responses on the board.

Learning Activities:
To clear any misunderstanding, explain the difference between infinitives, gerunds and 25 Min
participles.
Teaching Gerunds
 Gerunds always end with the suffix ing, functions as a noun in the sentence, and answers
the question "what."
o Tell learners to find the verb and ask themselves "what."
o For example: Surfing is fun.
o First, find the verb: is
o Next, ask yourself–what is?
o Finally, answer your question–surfing. Surfing is the gerund.
o Finding gerunds is as easy as 1-2-3.
 Teaching Participles
o Participles always have verb endings -ing, ed, -n, -t, etc. More importantly,
participles function as adjectives,
o which sets them apart from gerunds.
o Example of a participle:
o Jack, walking down the road, was looking at the lake.
o The participle is walking, as it ends in ing and is describing Jack.
 Teaching Infinitives
o Infinitives are verb phrases that begin with the word "to" and will be followed by
an action verb.
o For example: To understand the material, one must study.
o The Infinitive verb phrase is "to understand the material" with the infinitive being
"to understand."

Learners will write one sentence each for infinitives, gerunds and participles using the same verb.
Practice: Assessment For Learning (AFL)
Learners will attempt the practice sheets to reinforce their understanding of the concept. (Attached-Sheet
B for lower performing learners)
Teacher may assist lower performing learners in completing the task.
As an assessment for learning, teacher will monitor the activity to gauge learners’ understanding.
