Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English 8 Self-Learning Module on Using Emphasis Markers


for Persuasive Purposes. This module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-
In-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in
partnership with the Local Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor
Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum
using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their
personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

for Persuasive Purposes!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often
used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create
and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a
learner is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies
and skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

EXPECTATION

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 8. All the


activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Using
Emphasis Markers for Persuasive Purposes.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Identify the types of emphasis markers;


2. Use proper emphasis markers for persuasion; and
3. Write a paragraph using emphasis markers for persuasive purposes.

PRETEST

Directions: Identify and underline the emphasis markers used in each


statement.

1. Smoking is proved to be dangerous to the health. Nonetheless, 40% of


the population smokes.
2. Our teacher promised to take us on a field trip. However, he changed
his mind last week.
3. I particularly asked for a seat by the window.
4. She wore a coat, even though it was a very hot day.
5. We have different backgrounds. Accordingly, we will have different
futures.

RECAP

We have learned that logical connector is a conjunction that connects


a word in other words, a clause with another clause, a sentence with another
sentence, or a paragraph with another paragraph.

In other words, logical connectors are conjunctions that connect two


ideas that have a certain relationship, which are related to time (sequential),
reason & purpose, condition, or adversative.

LESSON

Emphasis markers are words and expressions that emphasize a point


according to their categories/functions.

1. Reduction is changing the perspective of a previous idea. It is used to


present an idea that is more important than the previous one.

Examples: anyway, anyhow, after all, at any rate, in any case

2. Exemplification/Reinforcement is used in clarifying or illustrating a previous


idea. There are several types of exemplification or reinforcement markers for
emphasis.

• Stress the truth of assertion


➢ in fact
• Emphasize the existing truth
➢ actually, as matter of fact
• Verify a previous idea
➢ really, truly, indeed, namely, clearly, certainly, naturally,
undoubtedly, of course, by all means, without a doubt, definitely

is used in expressing opposition.

• Replace a previous idea
➢ instead
• Disagree
➢ yet, but, still, though, however, conversely, even so in contrast,
on the contrary, on the other hand
• Present a logical idea
➢ still, despite, nonetheless, nevertheless, notwithstanding, in
spite of
• suggests contrasting result when certain condition is not met
➢ otherwise

7. Cause and Effect is used to relationship between reason and outcome.

• Stress the cause of something


➢ for, since, because, the reason why
• Present an outcome
➢ so, thus, hence, therefore, accordingly, thereupon,
subsequently, consequently, so that, after that, as a result, as a
consequence, for that reason, an account of

8. Sequence is used to show chronology of ideas.

• Denote order
➢ first, second, third...firstly, secondly, thirdly... initially, in the
first place, then, next, later, eventually, finally, lastly
• Present an action occurring at the same time with another action
➢ meanwhile, in the moment

Guided Practice

Identify what type of emphasis marker is the underlined word or phrase


in the following statements.

1. In order to stay safe amidst this pandemic, we must follow the rules.
First, always wear face mask. Next, wash our hands with soap and
water regularly. Then, disinfect with 70% alcohol. Last, obey social
distancing.

This is an example of sequence because the underlined words
denote order of events.

2. The reason why the number of Covid-19 patients increase drastically


is local transmission.
The answer is cause and effect because the phrase the reason
why stresses the cause of something.

3. Our national government is doing its best to address this global


pandemic yet there are people who are not satisfied with it.
The word yet shows disagreement therefore it’s an example of
contrast.

4. Experts from across the globe are now working on the vaccine
against Corona virus. Likewise, our local experts are recommending
us to use natural remedies for cure.
The word likewise is an example of emphasis marker that denotes
addition.

5. Natural remedies like ginger tea, lemon and others are in fact
effective according to those who have tried using them.
This sentence is an example of exemplification /reinforcement
because the phrase in fact stresses the truth of assertion.

6. Although some places in our country are already under Modified


General Community Quarantine (MGCQ) where most businesses are
allowed to operate, more people are still working from home.
The word although is an example of concession.

7. With this global pandemic, even the first world countries suffered
economic blow anyhow.
The word anyhow is an example of reduction.

8. All in all, COVID-19 has caused millions of death toll and negative
economic blow to most countries around the world.
The phrase all in all is an example of summary.
