ABSTRACT
The present article entitled “Use of soft drink and its effects among high school students of

bad effects on high school students of Kottayam. A sample of 53, VIII standard students of Mount
Carmel Girls High School, Kottayam was selected for the study. The data was collected using a
questionnaire prepared by the investigator. The major findings of the study indicate that most of the
students were aware of the bad effects of soft drinks. But they are not ready to stop or reduce the
consumption of soft drinks, as they get addicted to soft drinks. Students should be empowered to
stand against the unhealthy practices carried down by the soft drink companies.

INTRODUCTION
Health is a real wealth. We should take care of it on daily basis. We should eat right and
healthy food, practice necessary exercise and follow healthy life style to always remain fit. Good
health is the clear reflection of our disciplined life style and healthy food habits. Today man is
constantly exposed to a variety of toxic chemicals primarily due to changes in the life style. The
food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe and the environment we live in are
contaminated with toxic man made compounds. Progressive globalization of the food supply and
increase in food intake such as snacks, fast food and soft drinks typically form a significant part of
daily life.

The consumption of soft drinks was found to have increased dramatically over the past
several decades. The greatest increase in soft drink consumption has been among children and
adolescents. Some commercial soft drinks are high in sugar content and acidity. Soft drinks include
carbonated drinks, juices, dilutables, bottled waters, sports and energy drinks. Excessive intake of
soft drinks with high sugar and acid content, both regular and diet could cause detrimental impacts
on dental and general health including dental caries, dental erosion, and overweight. Soft drinks
have a higher risk of cancer disease and liver damage problems. Large amounts of sugar, artificial
sweetener and food colours in soft drinks are turned into obesity and increase chances of type 2
Diabetes. The sugar tax has raised the level of awareness; however it is necessary to educate pupils
about the harmful effects of different types of soft drinks as it is not always easy for individuals to
know from drink labelling what they actually contain.

Apart from this students of standard VIII of Kerala Board have a topic of soft drinks in the
chapter ‘Solutions’ in Basic science. In that it is mentioning about the chemicals and artificial
flavour that are adding to the soft drinks. This context also showed that it is very important to give
awareness among the students, who are the future wealth of a nation about the hazardous due to the
consumption of soft drinks.

Soft drinks are called soft in contrast with ‘hard’ alcoholic drinks. It is proven fact that
today children mostly prefer soft drinks than ordinary fruit juices. Hence the investigator decided to
conduct a study on the consumption of soft drinks among the high school students of Kottayam
town and to check their awareness regarding the health problem due to soft drinks and also the
factors that leads to its consumption.
