TARGET

Finding the differential of a function is actually finding the slope of the tangent
line of the same function. What you have been exposed of is finding the differential
of functions with y values raised to the first power.

In this module, what you are going to learn is finding the differential of a
relationship of x and y with y variable raised to more than one.

Such relationships can make graphs like circles, ellipse and horizontal
parabola. In such graphs, notice that the values of y are raised to the second power
which means that the y is not explicitly defined as a function of x. So in this module,
you are going to learn Implicit Differentiation for Lesson 1 and then Solving Problems
involving Related Rates for Lesson 2.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Illustrate implicit differentiation (STEM_BC11D-IIIi-2)
2. Solve problems (including logarithmic, and inverse trigonometric functions)
using implicit differentiation (STEM_BC11DIIIi-j-1); and
3. Solve situational problems involving related rates (STEM_BC11D-IIIj-2).

Before moving on, check how much

you know about this topic. Answer the pre-
test provided below:

8 Differentiation

Figure 1. Implicit Differentiation Used for Curves with two values for
y-coordinate

So far, all the topics under differentiation takes up a function that has a
y-value raised to the first power. The examples you were finding the derivatives of
are either y1 equated to a polynomial, y1 equated to a radical value, or y1 equated to
a rational value.

This time, what you are about to learn is finding the derivatives of curves that
has y values raised to more than 1.

Shown in Figure 1 are curves of circle, ellipse and horizontal parabola which
has y values raised to a power of 2. Using implicit differentiation, you will learn on
how to find the slope of the tangent line of these curves.

IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION
To be able to understand implicit differentiation, you must understand that
in a function, example, y = x2 + 3, you are finding the slope of the tangent line in
𝑑𝑦 𝑑
terms of x. So in the given example, you have, = (𝑥 2 + 3). But what if you are
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥

given the equation, x2 + y2 = 1 which is actually the equation of a circle with radius
of 1? What you were learning before this topic is actually called explicit
differentiation wherein the value of y is raised to 1 and the differentiation of any
equation with y values raised to more than 1 is called implicit differentiation.
Let’s go directly to some examples.

Example 1: Find the derivative of x2 + y2 = 1.

x 2 + y2 = 1

two terms is equal to the sum of

the equation.

2𝑥 + 2𝑦 ( ) = 0
𝒅𝒚 Note:
𝒅𝒙 Simply take the derivative of y2
which is equal to 2y.
𝒅𝒚
But what you actually need is so manipulate the equation so that at the left

side of the equation you will have then at the right side you will have the slope of
𝒅𝒙

the tangent line to the given equation.

𝒅𝒚

Notice that for the derivative of x3y6

(3𝑥 2 𝑦 6 ) + 𝑥 3 (6𝑦 5 ) = 18𝑦 2 is actually applying the Product

Rule for differentiation.

It is your turn to try finding the derivative of the following equations using
implicit differentiation.
Try: Find the derivative of the following equations:
1. 3x5 + 6y3 = 10
2. – y3 + y2 + x3 = 6
3. 5x4y3 + 3y2 = 1
Check your answer on the next page.
Moving on to finding the derivative of trigonometric equations using implicit
differentiation.
First, let’s recall the derivative of trigonometric functions using explicit
differentiation, we have:

cos 𝑥 = − sin 𝑥 sec 𝑥 = sec 𝑥 tan 𝑥

Let’s use them for implicit differentiation this time having y values.
Example 1: Find the derivative of y = sin(xy).
y = sin(xy) Note:
𝑑𝑦 𝑑𝑦 Recall that the angle is a product
(1) = cos(𝑥𝑦) [(1)𝑦 + 𝑥 (1) ] of x and y so use again the

Example 1. Find the derivative of 4x + ln x2y = 7.

APPLICATION TO IMPLICIT DIFFERENTIATION:

Solving Situational Problems Involving Related Rates
There are times that finding the derivatives of equations means naught
because we do not understand how they are applied in real life. To be able to
understand the concept about implicit differentiation more, let’s apply them using
real life situational problems.
Example 1. Air is being pumped into a spherical balloon at a rate of 5 cm 3/min.
Determine the rate at which the radius of the balloon is increasing when the diameter
of the balloon is 20 cm.
Given from the problem: Rate (V) = 5cm3/min
Diameter (d)= 20 cm.
Radius (r) = 10 cm
Notice that the volume of the balloon and the radius of the balloon will vary
with time and so they are functions of time. This means that 𝑽(𝒕) read as velocity or
rate of increase of volume is a function of time and 𝒓(𝒕) read as radius is a function
of time.
We also know that air is being pumped at a rate of 5cm3/min. This is the rate
by which the volume is increasing. Recall also that the velocity or rate of change is
actually a derivative so this means that, 𝑉 ′ (𝑡) = 5.
So what we have are the following:
𝑉’(𝑡) = 5 and r = 10 cm
The formula for the volume of a sphere is:
4
𝑉 = 𝜋𝑟 3 so if both the volume and the radius changes then we
3
need their functions.
4
𝑉(𝑡) = 𝜋 [𝑟(𝑡)]3 -> the equation we need.
3

Let’s solve for their derivative using implicit differentiation.

𝑉 ′ (𝑡) = 4𝜋𝑟 2 𝑟′
Note:
Also, 𝑉 ′ (𝑡) = 5 so, 5 = 4𝜋𝑟 2 𝑟′ 𝑟 ′ 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑎𝑠
𝑑𝑟

𝑑𝑟 5
= substituting the value of r = 10
𝑑𝑡 4𝜋𝑟 2
𝑑𝑟 1 1
= = 𝑐𝑚/𝑚𝑖𝑛 Answer.
𝑑𝑡 4𝜋(102 ) 80𝜋

Example 2. A 50ft ladder is placed against a large building. The base of the ladder
is resting on an oil spill, and it slips at the rate of 3 ft. per minute. Find the rate of
change of the height of the top of the ladder above the ground at the instant when
the base of the ladder is 30 ft. from the base of the building.
Illustration:

What you know from the problem:

𝑑𝑦
=3
𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑥
Your goal is to find when y = 30.
𝑑𝑡

Using the Pythagorean Theorem, you have,

𝑥 2 + 302 = 502 -> 𝑥 = 40.
It also means that the we need to use 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 50 from the illustration
Finding the derivative of this equation we have,
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
2𝑥 + 2𝑦 =0
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑦
2𝑥 = −2𝑦
𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑡
𝑑𝑦
𝑑𝑥 −2𝑦 𝑑𝑡 𝑑𝑦
= let’s substitute = 3, 𝑦 = 30 and 𝑥 = 40.
𝑑𝑡 2𝑥 𝑑𝑡

The rate is equal to:

𝑑𝑥 −30(3)
= = −2.25
𝑑𝑡 40

This means that the distance (x) is decreasing. It means that the ladder is
slipping down the building.

Try: Air is being pumped into a spherical balloon at a rate of 8 cm3/min. Determine
the rate at which the radius of the balloon is increasing when the diameter of the
balloon is 12 cm.
