Introduction
MY STORY
A few years ago, my life was very different. I was a top-performing sales rep for a Fortune 500 company. I loved my job and had plans for my career. Training? Marketing? Management? The options were endless. I knew if I worked hard, I would get results. When I became pregnant with my first child, I had no intention of quitting work to stay at home. Why should I? The money was good, I was successful, and the work stimulated me. I felt that I would be giving up an important part of myself if I stayed home, and that wouldnt be good for me or my baby. Besides, my husband, Bradford, and I had purchased a home that required both our incomes to make our mortgage payments. So leaving my job was simply not an option. After our daughter was born, I felt the Lord tugging at my heart to take a leap of faith and leave my high-paying job. This was no easy decision because I brought home half of our income. Would our family have enough money to live on without my income? Though I wanted to follow the Lords leading for my family, I dreaded the financial impact on our lives. I knew that statistics show more than half of marriages end in divorce, with money problems playing a major role. Who needs that kind of financial pressure?

So I went back to work. Yet after two months back in the office, I just couldnt shake the tug in my heart that the Lord wanted me to be an at-home mom. My husband and I discussed it at length and decided I would give my two-week notice. Through that incredibly risky step, I began to see an opportunity for God to supernaturally meet our needs in practical, day-to-day ways. When Bradford and I worked out our first one-income budget, we were stunned to discover how much money we were wasting each month on nonessentials! We thought we were good about not overspending, but we realized we could do a much better job. Not only were we paying full price for our groceries, cleaning supplies, and toiletries, but we were spending far too much on other things like dining out. My husbands income was going to need to stretch further, and God provided a dear friend, Rebekah, to serve as my savings mentor. She introduced me to a new way of saving through shopping sales, stocking ahead, and using coupons. She had always lived this way; Rebekahs mom had taught her to use coupons and to buy groceries on sale. Learning from her turned out to be just the beginning of my adventure in savings! I ran with my newfound knowledge. Its amazing how little you can spend when you are focused. Over the next few months, I learned many creative ways to save money. In one years time, I was pleased to see our grocery and dining-out budget go from $1,100 per month to under $200 per month! Thrilled, I shared my savings-success story with friends. Soon, I was teaching savvy-saving ideas to other people who wanted to learn too. I taught my first class to thirty women in a friends home. From there, I began to teach classes in her home every month. Often, the workshops were in such high demand that there wasnt enough space to admit everyone who was interested. This led to the successful launch of the Faithful Provisions blog (www.FaithfulProvisions.com) and an e-mail subscription with daily money-saving tips. Local and

national media followed as thousands discovered that they, too, could slash their grocery bills and save money. What I soon learned was that this was part of Gods plan for me and just the beginning of my opportunity to trust in Him. In the winter of 2009, the economic downturn that had been affecting families across the country finally impacted us. My husbands job was downsized, and he found himself unemployed with a wife, two children, a mortgage, and bills. His salary, bonus, car, fuel card, and benefits like healthcare were all gone. I had left my job voluntarily and now my husband was laid offwhat a turn of events from four years before! As a wife and mother, it is difficult to see your husband struggle with the double whammy of losing his job and the loss of the income that comes with it. Sure, Bradfords ego was bruised from being downsized, but he had peace with it. No sooner than the day after the layoff, God opened the door for me to teach more classes. This time, however, churches were calling to schedule workshops, and they actually wanted to pay me to do it! Bradford knew restoring his career was going to be a challenge in this new economy, but he set about trying to find a job. The offers didnt pour in, so it was during this period that he took a deeper interest in the Faithful Provisions blog. I was pleased when he approached me about offering to help out with sales and business planning. A dream of mine was coming true. I had always wanted to work from home with my husband, doing something we enjoyed. After all, he is my best friend! Since then, he has gone back to work outside the home, but we continue to work together on growing our business. With the money-saving strategies we learned in the time leading up to the layoff, we were in a position not only to stretch our budget, but to help others do the same and encourage generosity in those who were struggling.

and to stay committed. And now that I have no job it makes couponing even more important to my family. Some make it into a game. Christina was thrilled when her receipt said, You have saved $68 and I only spent $20! I feel like it was payday when I went shopping . . . its a game and a challenge. Some had money-saving strategies engrained in them. Ann explains, I grew up cutting and sorting coupons. My mom, aunts, and grandmother all do it. Some see it as Gods provision. Brandi is grateful for the savings strategies she put into place several months ago. I have a four-year-old son and my mother-in-law lives with me. I think God brought me to couponing because He realized I would need it in the future. My husband was killed in a car accident three months ago. God, friends, and family have gotten me through it emotionally, and couponing has tremendously helped me financially.

purchases. The ultimate goal is never to pay full price again. Think about it this way. Instead of running out and purchasing what you need right now at whatever price it is on the shelf, you will only purchase items that are a good deal. As you incorporate this savvy-saving lifestyle, you will find that almost everything you need, you have on hand. You purchased those during previous sales, and hopefully at least half off the retail price. All you are doing now is seeking great deals on the items you will need in the future. You are planning. You are giving yourself room for error. Because you are planning ahead, you have fewer financial emergencies. You reduce the amount you spend on unexpected purchases when you dont have to make a big grocery purchase every week. Because everything you need, you already have.
Your ultimate goal for your everyday purchases is never pay full price again.

have the time to devote to making weekly meal plans, what can you do? Spending hours trying to be creative (when you are not) is not a good use of your time. If this describes your situation, you may choose to invest in a meal-planning service like E-Mealz.com to do the work for you. You can then use other savings strategies, such as stocking up or couponing, to counteract the costs incurred by subscribing to a mealplanning service. You can still save money because you are using these strategies, just adapting them to what works best for you and your family. As you read, consider each tool presented in the book and the amount of time it will take you to implement. Everyone is different, so the savvy-saving ideas you put to use from this book will be different from those that someone else chooses. Simply choose what works best for you. This book isnt about implementing every single strategy. Its about choosing a path to savvy saving that works for you.
Encourage one another to seek out sales and coupons or go without wants in order to save up for a fun family vacation or event. An example would be saving up for a Disney trip. Make your goals specific and measurable so you can see your progress.

A great visual of money savings would be to add the amount of money saved by couponing from your receipts and put that money in a big glass jar on your counter. (You could use Monopoly money to make it fun.) Tell your family that when you get to a certain amount, youll use the savings for a family event or purchase. Have them help decide the goal. Joan
Keeping Their Favorite Foods Stocked
Those of you with teenagers or boys for that matter know how hard it is to keep things stocked when the food is going out faster than you can get it on the shelf. When using your Inventory Lists, encourage your husband and teenagers to help cross off items removed. This way you can always keep their favorite foods on hand. If they dont cross it off, you dont know you need it! My husband was not on board the first year. He thought it was a waste of time and didnt see the true savings. So January of the second year I challenged him to match dollar for dollar all my coupon savings. I would save my receipts and in December he would write me a check for that amount. December came and lets just say he was convinced when he was writing a check for over $1,200. Latasha
Teach Your Children about Money
In addition to saving money yourself, you can teach your children the value of money at an early age. Getting the whole family involved on grocery trips is not only fun (if you have the trip well-planned) but is a great way to instill your values in them in a very practical way. The best way to learn is by experience, and what better experience than to give your children ownership and responsibilities in the family grocery budget?

Not only are you teaching them how to save money, but you are helping them with lifelong skills like math, decision making, and problem solving. My kids are ten and seven, and when we go to the store, they each get a stack of coupons that they are in charge of. They find the item, load it in the cart, and figure out how much the item will cost after sales, store coupons, and manufacturer coupons. One thing they like is that if we have a coupon for an item that they really want, we can sometimes get it because it will be so cheap. Emily
