5" BOOKSHELF SPEAKER
MONITOR GRADE AUDIO SPEAKER KIT
Small monitors are popular due to the reduced impact on your room decor and your wallet! However, plastic cabinets give plastic sound. If
you prefer the warm sound of the boxes of old in a compact modern package, then let us introduce to you the Peerless HDS150 audiophile
high definition satellite speaker. A very capable, yet compact unit designed to faithfully reproduce both music and home theatre audio. The
handsome box is of a thick 18mm MDF construction with a rear firing tuning port and a curved-edge front fascia grille for low edge diffraction.
Design has centred on the best sound quality achievable in using a Peerless 5” HDS phase-plug driver. This little driver can have quite a punch!
Producing high dynamics and high SPL with low distortion. Use of premium electronic components and the best tweeter from Peerless, this
optimised design gives you astounding performance from such a compact system. With Home Theatre, this exceptional little speaker is suitable
for front and/or surround sound applications. For a fully dynamic system, we highly recommended these satellites be used in conjunction with
the XLS800 subwoofer. You will be amazed at the fullness of the quality of audio that these mini-monitors reproduce.

What Is Bi-Wiring and should I bother?

1 The term Bi-Wire simply refers to the fact that you will be running two sets of
loudspeaker cables from your amplifier to each of your speakers. Both the high
and low circuits are now entirely separate all the way back to the amplifier.
1 The idea with Bi-Wiring is to give a more direct path of each driver & filter circuit
to the amplifier. This takes advantage of an amplifiers high damping factor thus
reducing unwanted intermodulation distortion between the mid-woofer & tweeter.
1 Some will argue that there is little to no advantage for the additional cabling cost.
Bi-Wire Connection Positive results may also depend on the quality of the amplifier and cable used.

5” MTM SPEAKER KIT
ACOUSTIC TIME-ALIGNED & COAXIAL SINGLE POINT SOUND SOURCE MONITORS
The Peerless HDS250 high-definition loud speaker system is designed to reproduce both music & home theatre audio in true audiophile
quality. This attractive and relatively compact sized speaker system gives excellent and enjoyable long-term listening. The powerfully dynamic
5” HDS phase-plug Peerless driver supplies articulate, tight, fast bass with ultra-low distortion and minimal harmonics up to surprisingly high
volume levels! The crystal clarity of a beautifully detailed wide sound stage is improved over a majority of other speaker systems due to both
the coaxial speaker alignment and the tweeter being counter-sunk into the cabinet which achieves mechanical acoustic time alignment for a
brilliantly accurate reproduction with pinpoint sound imaging. Combined with a crossover developed with particular attention being paid to the
phase alignment achieves a uniquely seamless transition between the tweeter and mid-woofer not usually mastered by traditional systems. This
makes the HDS250 ideal in home theatre due to the impressive impact of the forward realism achieved and can be placed in any or all of the
room positions (front/rear/centre) due to the inherent wide dispersion. The incredible accuracy achieved places this speaker in a “Monitor” class
faithfully reproducing even the most subtle details of your favourite music. Multiple driver configurations are also more efficient so are also quite
suitable for the low power of valve amplifiers, etc. Ideally matched with our XLS1000 or XLS800 subwoofers for an exceptional high-end audio
system. A special version of the HDS250 has been optimised specifically as a horizontally mounted centre channel unit, see our HDS255c.

A FLAGSHIP MONITOR OF OUTSTANDING PRESENCE

These floor-standing speakers are designed for “Monitor” grade stereo reproduction as well as top-of-the-line home theatre main speakers
in a modern Digital THX surround sound system. The use of the Peerless HDS series of high definition phase-plug drive units matched with
bespoke crossovers to a high-end tweeter from Peerless. Packaged in an innovative and exclusive design professionally developed to create
a sound that is clean and clear with uncompromising acoustics dynamic range and frequency bandwidth to accurately reproduce any of
today’s high definition digital sources. The countersunk tweeter in the coaxial location between the mid-woofers achieves physical acoustic
time alignment between drivers. This corrects the sound source location to one single point, like focusing a lens, to achieve an incredible level
of clarity and accuracy to the sound stage bringing the audio into clear focus. Instruments are localised and positioned, close your eyes and
they are there! Sound effects take on a new reality when positioned correctly in space. Now the full impact and emotion of Movies and Music
can enthral the listener. An impressively high efficiency of 92dB at 1W/M means you don’t need big amplification for full dynamic sound. Along
with the well behaved impedance curve means the HDS455s are quite suitable for the low power of class-A or vacuum tube amplifiers. The
tall handsome cabinets are precision computer tooled from MDF locally and are available in real Australian hard-wood Jarah wood veneer
or durable black hard vinyl with a grain finish. A wide base tapered plinth is included, spiked feet are optional extras. There is the facility for
sand filling in a lower cavity for additional stability and extra resonance damping. Peerless offer highly articulate dynamics in their driver
designs, matched with a unique cabinet layout and a premium components in a professionally developed crossover, welcome to a new level
of accuracy in sound offered at an excellent price in kit form.

EXTENDED AUDIOPHILE PERFORMANCE IN A COMPACT ENCLOSURE
Audiophile level Sub that easily achieves extended bass performance
that fills the low frequency to subsonic with clean tight bass that has
authority without that one-note boom of unoptimised units. To achieve
this we have redeveloped and optimised a 200Wrms amplifier to have
remarkably stable performance in the low frequency region down
to 10Hz, producing extremely low distortion with ample power up to
200Wrms. We also tweaked the Q of the Peerless XLS to improve its
performance in such a compact enclosure that produces ample bass
down to the subsonics. The result is bass that’s so clean you don’t notice
it unless the audio material wants you to. Completely finished cabinet,
lined with internal wadding. Attractive wood-grain textured black vinyl box

The 200W XLS800 Subwoofer has been developed for premium performance in small to medium sized rooms for either satellite speaker setups,
complimenting any sized loud speaker system with warm quality subsonics, and/or home theatre systems where a compact, yet impressively
performing subwoofer is required that does not impose on too much space. The all new, exclusive to WES, true 200Wrms, built-in amplifier has
been factory tweaked to our XLS800 designers specifications for extraordinary performance in the low frequency region giving excellent control
and power to your audio experience and the absolute best dollar value. This crackerjack amplifier connects via RCA leads to the pre-amp output
on a high-end stereo system or the sub-out on any home theatre receiver. Provision for connection directly to the stereos speaker wires is there
for upgrading midi systems, etc. Also, world exclusive to WES, is our all new, high performance eXtra Long Stroke subwoofer driver unit that
was developed by Peerless Denmark to our designers specifications for this particular application. Giving exceptionally impressive performance
for only an 8” sized driver, this XLS subwoofer has a rigid aerodynamic cast alloy chassis, composite stiffened exotic materials pulp cone, extra
long stroke voice coil, very large magnet assembly and high power copper voice coil which produces a driver with dynamic tight fast clean
bass. These two high technology devices are beautifully integrated into a handsome, premium quality cabinet. This unique subwoofer enclosure
has double thickness 36mm front baffle, a centre bracing rib with vent support to provide a very strong and rigid subwoofer box with reduced
cabinet movement and thus tightening bass and reducing distortion. Flanged ports and curved edge box and grille design reduces air-turbulence
distortion for a better acoustic, more natural bass sound. This remarkable achievement in a relatively compact subwoofer is a clever compromise
between practical cabinet size and impressive low frequency sub-bass performance. The combination of a Top-Of-The-Line Danish made driver
with a quality, dual ported box and optimised 200Wrms amplifier, gives performance that equals or betters most 10” subs, without the bulkiness
or boom of similarly priced units. The smooth, authoritative bass response extends below 30Hz giving clean, accurate sound that will satisfy a
majority of bass hungry enthusiasts with DVD sound effects reproduced with dramatic aplomb. The XLS800 Active Subwoofer will excel in high
end speaker systems with CD, DVD, DVD-A and SACD music. It will impress by its ability to provide the lower octaves of bass that are normally
not produced by a subwoofer speaker of this compact size.

XLS800 SUBWOOFER 8"
A majority of people may want to upgrade to a high performance,
deep bass sub-woofer for an impressive home theater setup but
may not want to live with an over-sized, bulky, black box.
3
To this end, we have developed a 1.5ft audiophile sub-woofer.
This remarkable achievement of a relatively compact sub-woofer
is a clever compromise between practical cabinet size and an
impressive low frequency sub-bass response.
A new Peerless 8” speaker has been developed by our audio
consultant, Russell Storey, in conjunction with Peerless Denmark danish sound technology
to produce a high performance driver to suit this specific goal.
The amplifier has also been improved at the design stage to
produce an amp with quality to match the box and driver.
The XLS800 comprises of a single XLS 8" speaker in a dual
ported cabinet of less than 50L with a built in 200W amplifier.
This combination of a Top-Of-The-Line Danish made driver with
a heavy duty built box and 200Wrms amplifier gives performance
that equals or betters most 10” subs, without the bulkiness of
similarly sounding units, or boomyness of similarly priced units.

per glue instructions.

Before You Start:

Check that all contents of the kit are supplied and in good condition.
Make sure you have a clean work area. It is recommended you
use a drop sheet so that your work does not scratch the cabinet.

Place your speaker cabinet on a non-slip, non-scratch surface.

Insert the Amplifier. The ports are on the bottom side, so make sure you install
the amp upright. Pilot holes are pre-drilled so simply screw in the supplied
screws, caution that you don't thread the screws by over tightening. If using an
electronic screwdriver, adjust to a medium/high torque setting.
Insert the Speaker. Cabling is supplied with the amp and will connect directly
to the 8" driver. We recommend that you solder this connection for reliability, but
this is not essential. Make sure the cable is not obstructing the ports or going to
rattle on the drivers cone. Now simply locate the driver into the flush hole and
apply the screws, again tightening carefully as not to strip them or slip and
puncture the cone.

S200W SUB WOOFER IN-BUILT AMPLIFIER
S200W CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS
!Internally, the RED and BLACK wires connect directly to the speaker driver terminals. Black is negative (-), Red
positive (+). Make sure the cable is sufficiently anchored and if extending, make sure your connection is
correctly insulated. Do not apply power until you have double-checked all wiring and connections. The
following is external connection options:
!For connecting the S200W to multi-channel surround sound amplifiers you will require an RCA adaptor lead, of
appropriate length, that has 1x RCA plug to 2x RCA plugs. (See WES catalogue, section 8.) Connect this
between the "Low Level INPUT" RCA terminals, both L & R, on the S200W. Connect the other end (1x
RCA plug) to the "SUB WOOFER OUTPUT" terminal on your amplifiers rear panel.
!For connecting the S200W to a standard stereo amplifier you will require a stereo RCA lead, of appropriate
length, that has 2x RCA plug to 2x RCA plugs. (See WES catalogue, section 8.) Connect this between
the "Low Level INPUT" RCA terminals, both L & R, on the S200W. Connect the other end to the
"PREAMP OUTPUT" terminals on your amplifiers/preamplifiers rear panel. This output MUST be after
your amplifiers volume control so that your volume control will affect the subwoofers volume level too.
!“LOW LEVEL OUTPUT” is for connecting additional S200W sub woofer amplifiers.
!For connecting the S200W to an amplifier without PREAMP outputs you will either cut and split the existing
speaker connection leads or acquire additional speaker connection cable, of appropriate length, to
connect the S200W Inline with your normal speaker connection. (See WES catalogue, section 13.)
Connect the speaker cable to your amplifiers speaker output terminals, connect this to the S200W
“HILEVEL IN” terminals. Then connect the S200W “HILEVEL OUT” to your existing stereo speakers.
Double-check your left & right, and the positive & negative polarity in all your speaker cable connections.
S200W ADJUSTMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Your existing stereo speakers have a low frequency cutoff (the lowest frequency possible to be produced by such
a speaker), any sound below this frequency would not normally be heard, thus you acquired a sub woofer to
reproduce these lower frequencies. The control labelled “PWR/PRT FREQ.” will set this frequency where you
want the sub woofer to take over. Check your Stereo speakers instruction manual for this value, or simply adjust
by ear. A boomy bass sound means the frequency is too high (both the sub and your stereo speakers are
generating bass) A mellow but slightly empty sound means the frequency is too low (a gap exist between the sub
and the stereo speakers). Adjust the "GAIN" also. Unsatisfactory sound will also result if the S200W “PHASE”
switch is set incorrectly. Try both selections. For connection to an amplifier with "Sub Out", set the frequency to
maximum (180Hz) and make your adjustments via your amp (see its instruction manual). Generally, many hours
of listening can occur before correct levels are accomplished. You should also experiment with the location of
your sub woofer as this can dramatically improve performance.

General Subwoofer Location Information

The biggest impediment to good quality bass from a subwoofer usually has
little to do with the subwoofer itself but the problem is that a sub produces long
wave lengths (bass) form standing waves in rooms with parallel walls,
resulting in a very uneven distribution of sound level throughout the listening
room. Careful location of the subwoofer can help. First, keep your subwoofer
away from a corner by at least two feet. Corner placement seems attractive
because it increases the bass output but this location also excites more
(usually unwanted) room resonance. Next, by placing the subwoofer so that
the distance from the woofer to the nearest two walls is significantly different,
you can stagger these standing waves so that they don't line up on top of each
other. The proper phasing of the subwoofer depends on its location relative to
the other speakers. The easiest way to get this right is to try it in and out of
phase; whichever way has the most bass is the right way. If it's too much bass,
try adjusting the frequency cut-off or just turn the subs volume down.

One Subwoofer or Two?

Far more effective than finding even
the most ideal subwoofer location of a
single subwoofer is to use two
subwoofers. They can effectively
compliment each other by having one
woofer's peaks filling in the other
woofer's troughs. In addition to
following the same considerations
mentioned above, you'll want to place
the two woofers so that they are
different distances from the walls
relative to each other.

FEATURE PANEL

XLS800 Location
The twin ports of this subwoofer
fire out the back. Please don't
obstruct these ports as distortion
and wind turbulence noises will
result. It is recommended that at
least 6 inch or 15cm from the wall.

XLS800 - Speaker Placement Suggestions
Before we begin, let us give you a few warnings.
The methods here will help get you the most accurate bass. If your goal is strictly maximum "slamitude," just stick your sub in the
corner, turn up all the knobs and have fun. Finding the perfect settings and location takes time. If you have low tolerance for moving
speakers and twiddling with your audio gear, realize that you're missing a few simple techniques by which you may be able to greatly
improve the sound of your system. Let your ear be the final judge. We'll give you some techniques and advice, but the science of
room acoustics is so complex it defies easy answers.
The Goal
It's relatively easy to put a XLS800 into your system and hear more bass. What's difficult is making the XLS800's bass integrate with
the sound of your main speakers. A poorly integrated XLS800 will sound thick, heavy boomy, and unnatural, calling attention to the
fact that you have smaller speakers reproducing the frequency spectrum from the midrange up, and the big XLS800 putting out low
bass. A well-integrated XLS800 produces a seamless sound with natural reproduction of music and no boomy thump.
Positioning
Room acoustics have an enormous impact on the sound of speakers, including the XLS800s. A phenomenon called "standing
waves" makes bass response uneven from place to place in your room. To experience this for yourself, put on a CD with a strong,
consistent bass line. Notice how the volume of the bass goes up and down as you move around the room. Stand in one place and
then squat down-you will probably notice that the bass changes in the vertical plane as well! Because the XLS800's location affects
how standing waves are created, the first step to getting accurate bass response is finding the right spots for your XLS800 relating to
your listening position. We'll share a few guidelines that may be helpful, but in the long run nothing beats trial, error and your own
ears.
Stick It In The Corner-
This is the advice most often given and it certainly will yield loud bass. But corner mounting may make the woofer sound "one note-
ey," and boomy on music. If lack of bass volume is your biggest XLS800 problem, this may be the answer for you.
Avoid Sitting Up Against the Wall-
Bass waves build up and "hang out" at room boundaries (walls). Your system will sound thick and heavy when your listening chair is
up against a wall. If you must sit against the wall because of furniture layout, place your XLS800 away from walls and corners.
Avoid Symmetrical Placement-
Avoid putting the XLS800 the same distance from two walls. For example, if you have a 20' wide room, don't put the XLS800 10'
from each wall. Similarly, don't put the XLS800 near a corner and equidistant from the side and rear walls. Instead, stagger the
distances to each wall.
Put The XLS800 As Close To The Main Speakers As Possible-
Even though bass sounds are non-localizable, cabinet resonance and other factors conspire to make this less true in practice than in
theory. It'll be much easier to get seamless blending between sub and main speakers if they are on the same side of the room. If
possible, put the XLS800 behind the plane of the main speakers. At very least, keep the XLS800 in the front half of the room.
Here's An Old Trick-
Put your woofer in the same spot as your listening position. It's best to raise the XLS800 off the ground to seated ear height (use a
sturdy, non-resonant platform). Play a piece of music with an ascending and descending bass line. Crawl around the floor on your
hands and knees…until you find the spot where the bass sounds smoothest, and where each bass note has about the same volume
and clarity. Avoid positions where some notes 'hang' longer and/or sound slower or thicker than others. When you've determined
where the bass sounds best, put the XLS800 there.
Use Two XLS800s-
Using two asymmetrically placed subs will minimize the effects of standing waves in your room, yielding smoother bass response as
well as better dynamic range. But don't run out and buy another sub just yet. Get the sub you have now to sound its best before
spending more money. You may be perfectly happy with just one sub once you've tried our suggestions.
One Note Of Caution-
The XLS800 is NOT magnetically shielded and may damage your TV if placed too close to the set. Select an unused video input on
your TV to bring up a single colour screen. If you see any colour distortion anywhere on the screen, an unshielded speaker is too
close to the set and should be moved away from the TV until the colour distortion disappears.
XLS800 Adjustments
Position and adjustments are interactive so every time you move your XLS800, you need to readjust the sub volume, low pass filter
and phase (polarity). When properly adjusted, you won't "hear" the XLS800 at all. It will sound like your main speakers are making all
the sound- except with a whole lot more bass than they could muster all on their own.
Setting Level-
Get a suitable test CD or DVD with sine wave signals or warble tones covering the range of 20Hz to 200Hz or so. Using a sound
level metre, match the output at the listening position at 50Hz and 150Hz [using 'C' weighting and 'slow' metre response] by
adjusting the volume control of the XLS800. Make sure the volume control on your preamp [or receiver] remains at the exact same
volume. If you don't have a metre or test discs, use a CD with vocals and a consistent acoustic bass line and set level to the point
where the upper and lower ranges of the bass sound well balanced.
Setting Low Pass Filter (Crossover)-
If your main speakers are full size with good bass response, set the low pass filter to 60Hz - 80Hz to start. If your main speakers are
bookshelf designs, set the low pass filter in the 80Hz - 100Hz range. If you have compact satellites, set the low pass filter to 150Hz
to start. Put on a test CD or DVD with test tones. With a fixed input level, carefully measure the output level at the listening position
for each…interval between 30 and 200Hz and write it down or make a line plot on a sheet of graph paper. Listen while you measure.
You hear differently than the sound level metre does…trust your ears, not the metre. Raise or lower the low-pass filter setting on the
XLS800 to achieve the smoothest response. Turn the low pass filter down if there's an excess of output around the crossover point,
turn it up if there's a response dip. Do not be alarmed if you have response variations of several dB from test tone to test tone. You
are seeing normal variations in response caused by the speaker's interaction with the room. Absolute flat response is a worthy but
somewhat unrealistic expectation in most systems and rooms. If you don't have a metre and test disc, use your ear to make this
setting. Put on a CD with male voice and a consistent bass line. Adjust the low-pass filter until the male voice sounds "full" and
natural but not thick and heavy.
Setting Phase (Polarity)-
Using a test signal at the nominal crossover frequency [you set in the step above], set the phase of the XLS800 to deliver the highest
output at the listening position. It helps to have a friend on hand to change the polarity setting on the sub while you measure and
listen.
Do It All Again-
All these adjustments are interactive. Once you set polarity, go back and re-adjust level and low-pass filter settings to get the
smoothest response. The final proof of optimal performance is in the listening. Put on a CD with an acoustic bass. The bass
instruments should appear to be coming from the main speakers, not the sub. The sub should be audibly "invisible."
What About Movies?-
If you listen to movies with your new set-up, you may find that the bass is a little "light" and doesn't deliver the impact you expect. No
problem-just turn up the XLS800 volume until you are happy. Mark the volume settings that are best for music and movies and
readjust as you switch sources. If that's too inconvenient, choose a mid-point level that gives you the best balance.

12” SUBWOOFER KIT AUDIOPHILE EXTREME
The XLS1000 is a true audiophile subwoofer. It is easily capable of out performing a majority of units costing multiples more. A beautifully clean
sound with very fast and tight bass at either subtle volumes or at extra high SPL, reproducing deep, dynamic and detailed bass at frequencies
down to the infra-sonic. This top-of-the-line subwoofer will exceed the requirements for a majority of systems and rooms with both accuracy in
music and explosive effects for Home Theatre that will shake your world! The incredible depth of bass goes down below 18Hz in an enclosure of
only 60 litres. An eXtra-Long-Stroke 12” Peerless subwoofer is used, set in the forward firing mode. The Peerless XLS, extra heavy duty, exotic
material manufactured subwoofer is complemented by a duplicate 12” rear mounted Passive Radiator. This is a non-powered “Drone Cone” that
utilises the low frequency energy within the box, similar to a port but with some distinct advantages that improve performance and specifications.
Our dual 12” design achieves superior audiophile sound with lower than normally achievable frequency response for a given sized enclosure,
all without the air breathing distortion normally associated with a vented enclosure used at such low frequencies and high volume levels.

XLS1000 - Speaker Placement Suggestions
EXPERIMENT ON ROOM LOCATION FOR THE XLS SUBWOOFER BOX
The biggest impediment to good quality bass from your subwoofer usually has little to do with the subwoofer itself, but its location
within the room. The problem is that a sub produces extra long wave lengths (bass) that form "Standing Waves" in the room,
resulting in a potentially uneven distribution of sound level at your favourite listening position. Some attention to the location of the
subwoofer can help dramatically improve your listening experience and achieve remarkable improvements in sound quality.
CORNER PLACEMENT
We recommend that you keep your XLS1000 away from the corners by at least two feet. Corner placement can increase the bass
output, but this location can excite large amounts of unwanted room resonances that will rattle objects and may give a boomy note
to your bass sound. Try "Setup C" as an experiment. You may and like this setup, you are the final judge. Just watch that crockery!
RECOMMENDED LOCALES
In "Setup A & B", you are placing the XLS1000 so that the distance from the subwoofer to the nearest wall and its opposing wall is
different. This will stagger the standing waves so that they don't compound up on top of each other, produce rattling resonances.
Experimenting is the key, trying different locations for both you and the sub will show benefits of what's possible and thus help in
resolving a final location with minimal compromises. Locating the XLS1000 toward the front, as near to your main speakers as
possible is also recommended. Remember also to be careful not to obstruct the rear firing woofer, this is the subsonics.
I CANNOT HEAR THE SUB?
The XLS1000 is an exceptionally clean, distortion-free subwoofer. As a result, it can be quite difficult to judge the bass content and
correct location of this sub and therefor feel immediately satisfied with your location decision. After all, subsonics are felt not heard!
The subwoofer location experiment may require some living with, and along with the adjustments of level controls, etc, the final
setup may take some extra time and many different media sources before you are generally satisfied that your getting maximum
sound quality from your XLS1000. Although, if you cant exactly here the sub, its probably perfectly tuned and in the best location!

Recommended Optimum Setup A S200W AMPLIFIER CONNECTION & ADJUSTMENTS

The S200W included with the XLS1002 is a 200 Watt RMS amplifier

or just turn the subs gain down.
VIDEO-AUDIO MODE
"VIDEO MODE" is a subsonic filter (<20Hz) to protect your XLS1002
from excessive cone movement. If you are in a small or difficult to tune
room, or if you are listening to ridiculously loud music or special
effects, or if the CD or Turntable keeps skipping, or your neighbours
keep complaining, you may wish to switch in the Sub-Sonic Switch to
"VIDEO" mode to protect your unit from damaging sub-sonic energies.

RIGHT

XLS1002 is shown here with its S200W amplifier and hole in cabinet to suit. or

XLS1000 is without a hole for the S200W amplifier. This box LEFT
requires either a hole cut into it to suit your choice of inbuilt
amplifier or requires speaker cable access via a small hole or our
J706 recessed single speaker socket. We would suggest you
locate this on the bottom of the box for an attractive concealment.

LOOK HERE! READ ME! IMPORTANT!

Once you have taken the box out of the packaging, you should
make a decision on the box orientation that you desire. This is
whether you want the Amplifier and/or wood feature panel to the
LEFT or to the RIGHT of the front driver. Once this choice is
made you will know which side is the bottom and thus where to
put the feet which require holes to be drilled to affix.

5cm

5mm Drill Bit

For an improved, tight bass response it is highly recommended that you attach some heavy-duty spiked feet to the XLS1000.
For our recommended SPIKE35, a 5mm hole is drilled on all 4 corners (in about 5 to 7cm from the edge). A nut and bolt is used to affix
the feet, so it is recommended that you do the feet first, for easy bolt access and for better box stability when installing the drivers, etc.

Place your speaker cabinet on a non-slip, non-scratch surface.
Identify the orientation of the box as you desire (Left or Right).
Insert the Amplifier.
The ports are on the bottom side, so make sure you install the
amp upright. Pilot holes are pre-drilled so simply screw in the
supplied screws, caution that you don't thread the screws by
over tightening. If using an electronic screwdriver, adjust to a
medium/high torque setting. Beware which way is UP!
Insert the Wadding. (Ignore as wadding is already installed.)
The internals require some dampening. Ensure you cover
the amplifiers plastic cover,
but allowing the connection
cable thru. Split the
remains into strips and
place BETWEEN the
bracing battens on the
top, bottom, left and right panels. Don't allow any of the wadding to
touch any part of the drivers. Use a staple gun or appropriate glue.
Affix the wadding to the side of the cabinet, stapling down all
edges and loose areas.

Apply the gasket tape.

For a good air-tight seal between the speaker and cabinet,
it is required that you apply gasket tape around the whole
circumference of the flange on both of the woofers.
Passive Radiator
Insert the Passive Radiator.
This is the driver without any magnet. It is mounted on the rear of
the cabinet. Identified as the hole without the feature panel or grill
mounting plugs. Gradually tighten each screw, traversing across
the woofer. Carefully, ensure the wadding does not interfere with
the driver and that the gasket seals tight and proper and you don't
thread the screws or accidentally slip and puncture the cone!

APPLYING GASKET TAPE

AROUND THE DRIVERS SOLDERING IS RECOMMENDED
IS VERY IMPORTANT !

Insert the Speaker.

Cabling is supplied with the amp and will connect directly to the 12" driver.
We highly recommend that you solder this connection for reliability. Make
sure the cable is not going to rattle on the drivers cone. Now simply locate
the driver into the flush hole and apply the screws, again tightening
carefully as not to strip them or slip and puncture the cone.
Feature Panel
You may wish to leave this untill after the testing stage.
Please affix the panel carefully with the appropriate
GLUE (Not Supplied) and let dry as per glue
instructions. The front is identified by the grill sockets.

HD260 & HD360

The HD260 is a small tower speaker using the Fountek
ribbon tweeter and two Peerless HDS 832873 5-inch mid/
range woofers. This uses a Nomex paper cone, a very large
ferrite magnet and neoprene rubber roll surround. The
HD260 system has exceptional efficiency of 92.5dB/1m/1W
and will provide very good volume levels from the SILICON
CHIP 20W class-A amplifier, even in large rooms.
The HD260 is a MTM (midrange-tweeter-midrange)
arrangement (also known as D’Appolito) with a rear bass
reflex port. The HD260C centre speaker is identical in
every respect except that the tweeter is rotated through
90°, so that it will be vertical when the cabinet is laid on
its side.
The smaller HD360 bass reflex system uses the Fountek
ribbon tweeter and Peerless 830883 6.5-inch midrange

the tweeter and woofer filter networks are essentially quite

separate, as shown in the diagrams of Fig.1 & Fig.2.
The tweeter is fed with a third-order high pass (18dB/
octave) filter and the woofer is fed with a second-order
(12dB/octave) low pass filter. In the case of the HD-260, the
crossover frequency is 3.8kHz and 3.2kHz in the HD-360.
Both crossover networks are based on the same PC board
but there are differences. Each crossover network employs
air-cored inductors, non-inductive wirewound resistors
and 400V metallised polyester capacitors. High quality
components are used throughout.

Building them
The designer of these Signature Series loudspeakers has
been very particular in specifying how everything must Fit the woofer carefully and do not touch the cone at this

components and even oxygen-free copper wiring. We don’t
think that last detail is really necessary but that is a story
for another time.
This very fine attention to detail on the part of the de-
signer has made the task difficult for the kit supplier but it
means that you, the ultimate kit-builder, will have an easy
time putting them together.
The loudspeaker cabinets are supplied fully assembled
in two forms, unfinished MDF or black vinyl. In the case
of the unfinished MDF cabinets, it is up to you as to how
you finish them.
The prototype cabinets featured in this article were
spray-painted to a very high standard. If you have access
to a high-pressure spray gun and spray booth, so much
the better.
Alternatively, if you intend painting them, we recom-
mend using a roller, to avoid leaving brush marks – it is
amazing how brush marks can catch the light and become
noticeable, especially if gloss paint is used.
Not only are the cabinets fully assembled but they also
