Alternators manufactured by Cummins Generator Technologies are designed to comply with the
performance standards in IEC 60034-1.
The ability of a generator to accommodate unbalance current is specified by IEC 60034-1 in terms of
negative-sequence current (I2). This guide specifies the terms I22t = K, as shown in below curve.

4. Protection Setting Calculation
a. Undervoltage (27)
Generators are designed to operate continuously at minimum voltage of 95% of its rated
voltage.
This element protects for abnormal undervoltage conditions. Generators are generally
tolerant of system undervoltage, however, when these undervoltage are sustained they
may be indicative of more serious conditions as described below. Two levels of tripping
are provided depending on the severity of the condition, these under voltage elements
are blocked from tripping when the generator breaker is open to allow for startup
conditions.
Level 1 (slow): Single Phase Element-1 : Set @ 80% of Vnom LG . This element
supplements the faster undervoltage element and permits slightly depressed voltages to
be sustained for a longer period to allow for external fault clearing.
Level 2 (fast): Single Phase Element/2: Set @ 70% of Vnom LG. This element is a very
fast trip for severe undervoltage conditions. This protects for a possible out of step
condition that could occur from an external system fault clearing condition. For
example, during a temporary close-in fault the generator may briefly overspeed until the
fault is cleared at which time there is a risk that the restored system and generator
voltages will be out of phase.
Note: This Voltage 27-2 setting value is used for 51V function also.

c. Loss of Excitation (40)
The source of excitation for a generator may be completely or partially removed through
such incidents as accidental tripping of a field breaker, field open circuit, field short
circuit, voltage regulation system failure, or the loss of supply to excitation system.
Whatever the cause, a loss of excitation may present serious operating conditions for
both the generator and the system.
Rev.03
d. Negative Phase Sequence (46)
The Negative Sequence Overcurrent function (46) provides protection against possible
rotor overheating and damage due to unbalanced faults or other system conditions which
can cause unbalanced three phase currents in the generator.
Generator withstand limit against negative sequence overcurrent (K) I22t = 10 (As per
IEC-60034-1)
Generator continuous withstand limit: 8 % (By Manufacturer)
We propose Definite Time (Level 1) Alarm setting = 4% with time delay 10 sec. (i.e.
well below 8% continuous limit)
Invers Time (Level 2) I2 Continuous = 7% (i.e. well below 8% continuous limit), Short
time limit curve K (I2) sq. * t = 9 ((i.e. below K=10 limit)
Note: As per the Relay manual: The negative sequence time overcurrent element rests
after a fixed liner time of 240 seconds.

e. Thermal Overload (49T)
In general, generators can operate successfully at rated kVA, frequency, and power
factor for a voltage variation of 5% above or below rated voltage. Under emergency
condition, it is possible to exceed the continuous output capability for a short time.
The stator overload function (49T) provides protection against possible damage during
overload conditions.
As per IEEE Generator short time thermal capability for balanced three-phase loading
diagram (Short time capability curve) the wining will withstand 117% rated current for
120 second.
IEEE recommends using this function of alarm purpose only.
We propose 110% of rating and 120 second time delay for alarm.
This is back up protection for Generator. To avoid unnecessary trip of the generator we
recommend making OFF this function in generator protection.
Rev.03
Phase TOC Overcurrent (51)
This is back-up protection of the generator, for better time gradings the overcurrent
setting should be co-ordinate with load connected feeder overcurrent setting.
Generator data:
Generator load current is 130 A and Phase Fault current is 755 A
We propose Generator time delayed over current setting = 200% of gen. ratted current.
With time dial setting of 5
The proposed above setting is coordinated with other O/C protection setting. Please

g. Earth Fault Time Overcurrent (51G)
This is back-up protection in Earth Fault of generator, for better time gradings the
overcurrent setting should be co-ordinate with load connected feeder setting.
Generator data:
Generator load current is 130 A and Earth current is 200 A
We propose Generator time delayed Earth Fault current setting = 100A (50% Earth Fault
Current) and time dial: 2 - To prevent generator tripping for our side earth fault.
The proposed above setting is coordinated with other E/F protection setting. Please

h. Voltage Control Overcurrent (51V)
This element provides phase fault backup protection for external system faults. It is
normally set as slow to allow external clearing of faults to the extent possible without
stator damage.
The voltage control function allows the pickup to be set below normal loading (i.e. 50%
FLA). Since this is set for voltage-controlled operation, the function is not active unless
the voltage is below the voltage control setpoint. This philosophy is used to confirm that
the overcurrent is due to system fault. It is typical to set the voltage control limits in the
range of 0.7 to 0.9 per unit RMS voltage.
The proposed above setting is coordinated with other O/C protection setting. Please
find attached TCC plots in Section 8.3-(ETAP TCC curves for 13.8kV and 0.48kV
System)

i. Overvoltage (59)
Generators are designed to operate continuously at rated voltage of100% of its rated
voltage.
Over voltages should not occur on a generator fitted with an automatic voltage regulator.
Overvoltage may be caused by defective operation of the voltage regulator under
isolated operation of the generator. The relay detects the over excitation of generators by
measuring the over voltage

j. VT Fuse Loss (60FL)
Some functions may operate inadvertently when a VT fuse is blown or an event causes a
loss of one, two, or all three potentials to the relay. Internal fuse loss detection logic.

k. Under / Over frequency (81)
The generators are designed to accommodate IEC 60034 then the generators are required
to deliver continuously rated output at the rated power factor over the range of + or – 2%
in frequency. (i.e. 58.8 to 61.2)
Rev.03
l. Three Phase Gen Current Differential (87)
The Phase Differential function (87) is a percentage differential with an adjustable slope
of 1–100%. Although this protection is used to protect the machine from all internal
winding faults, single-phase to ground faults in machines with high impedance
grounding may have currents less than the sensitivity of the differential relay (typically
between 3 and 30 primary amps). Since this is a high impedance grounded application
then this differential protection is suitable only to detect phase faults. For this project,
ground fault protection is provided by the 87G elements.
The 87U element is intended to detect very high difference currents that clearly indicate
an internal fault. This element is set high enough to not respond to false difference
current caused by CT error.
The relay will automatically calculate and set settings TAPX and TAPY based on the
INOM. We cannot change the TAP settings:
Rev.03
When E87 = GEN the SEL-700G uses the dual-slope percentage- restraint differential
characteristic without harmonic restraint or blocking. Also, the relay automatically sets
SLP2 = 70 percent and IRS1 = 6 and hides these settings.
The sources of differential current for external faults fall into three categories:
• Differential current that is not proportional to the current flow through the zone
(steady state).
• Differential current that is proportional to current flow through the zone
(proportional).
• Differential current that is transient in nature (transient).
SLP1 should be set above normal steady-state and proportional errors. SLP2 is
used to accommodate transient errors. The following is a list of typical sources
of error that must be considered.
• CT accuracy (typically less than 3% in the nominal range): Taken 1%
• Relay accuracy (±5% or ±0.02 • INOM, whichever is largest.): Taken 5%

m. Ground Differential (87 N)
The ground differential element (87N) that operates based on the difference between the
measured neutral current and the sum of the three-phase current inputs. The 87N element
provides sensitive ground fault detection on resistance-grounded particularly where
multiple generators are connected directly to a load bus.
The relay provides two definite-time delayed ground current differential elements
designed to detect ground faults on resistance grounded generator. Because these
elements are current-based.
This protection does not respond to ground faults beyond the generator phase current
transformers. This quality makes the element ideal for protecting generators connected
to multiple-unit buses or generators connected to a load bus.
The relay uses the neutral CT connected to the relay IN input to measure the generator
neutral current. It then calculates the residual current, which is the sum of the three-
phase current inputs (from CTs located at generator terminals). The relay adjusts the
residual current by the ratio of the CTR and CTRN settings to scale the residual current
in terms of the secondary neutral current. It then calculates the difference. Normally,
under balanced load or external ground fault conditions, the difference current should be
zero. In the event of an internal ground fault, the difference current is nonzero. If the
difference current magnitude is greater than the element pickup setting, the element
picks up and begins to operate the definite time-delay.
We propose level-1 Ground differential current setting = 10 % Max. ground fault current
with addition of 0.2 second time delay.
And level—2 Ground differential current setting – 50% Max. ground fault current with
0.1 sec time delay.
