On December 11th, the Chicago Transit
Justice Coalition organized our fourth “Hour
of Power” protest. We also had Sister Cheryl of
Poppin’ Off For Democracy to top it off.
Unlike the official union protests, our locations
and times are democratically chosen by

Local 241 President Hill and Local 308
President Dixon were under so much pressure
from members about the rash of assaults on
front-line workers, that the ragtag volunteer
organizers at the Coalition were making them
look like CTA underlings. So they put together a
sizable last-minute protest about “safety.”
The beauty of having two protests is that it
gave members a choice of locations to exercise
their First Amendment rights. Unfortunately,
President Hill could not help himself and
called us out as anti-union. Oddly, he told the
media that he was organizing a “walkout” and
“job action” that day. Many members were
disappointed that they did not know such a thig
was going on.
That is a typical of ineffectual union leadership.
They mislead, control, evade and emulate others
who are really leading the union. We are proud
