Spotlight Janice Lutz-Vanhoy - Wellness Arts Coordinator

Today, we’re featuring Janice Lutz-Vanhoy, our Wellness

Arts Coordinator. She started her career in 1987 as a
Recreation Specialist at Fitzgerald Health Care Center. In
2015, she joined Arbor Acres because of shared values.
Her favorite aspect of working here is that every day is
different.

One of Janice’s favorite moments at Arbor Acres is when

she ran into a resident in the hallway who was trying to
attend all the activities in the Lamplighter! As they were
speaking, another resident reminded her that, “You can’t do
everything. You’re supposed to pick and choose what you
like best.” We love an enthusiastic resident.

The reason Janice has stayed at Arbor Acres this long is

because she believes she has more to accomplish.

“I hope I continue to have the opportunity to stay and

implement those ideas (and) events and continue to be a
part of life at Arbor Acres that residents find fun and that
makes people happy!”
Welcome to Arbor Acres!

on’t believe us? Check out the photo below of a man who was a truck driver
for many years. The side of his face that faced his driver window is much
more wrinkled than the other side that wasn’t as exposed to sunlight2.
We wear sunscreen to protect our skin from the radiation (or
ultraviolet rays) that comes from the sun. Those pesky UV rays
are what burn and wrinkle our skin. Did you know that even on
cloudy days, we’re still exposed to UV rays?

Just like the weather, experts can predict how intense the UV
rays will be on a given day. 1 is low (almost no UV rays), and 11
is extreme (it’s a good idea to stay indoors). This number can be
high even on cloudy days which is why the UV index is a better
indicator than the amount of sun that day.

Here are some ways to avoid the aging and wrinkling effects that UV rays have on
our skin3:
• Stay indoors between 10 am – 4 pm as the UV index is at its highest
• Seek shady areas and wear a hat and sunglasses when spending time outdoors, such as traveling to houses or walking to other
parts of campus
• If you’re outdoors for a long period of time, apply sunscreen with SPF 30 (or higher) every two hours (even on cloudy days) and
after swimming or sweating
• Avoid bright surfaces, like sand, water, and snow, which can reflect UV rays and increase your exposure

Creative Ways to Stay Hydrated
W
e’ve always been told that drinking enough water is
important, but how much is enough?

Here’s a breakdown:

Men: about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of water a day Women: about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of water a day1

Before you start chugging water, however, consider this: And yes, water is ABSOLUTELY a healthier alternative to soda.

You can get water from food too, not just from a water bottle.
