Part 2: In-Text Citations

Begin by Reviewing:
Santa Ana College’s “In-Text Citations: The Basics” PowerPoint
Scan the QR code to be taken to their website and download the “In-Text Citations” presentation. You can also
Google “Santa Ana College MLA resources,” select “MLA Resources—Santa Ana
College,” and download “In-Text Citations” PowerPoint.
NOTE: Be sure to read the comments of the PPT as they provide context for the
slides.

PowerPoint Recap Questions:

1. When should you use an in-text citation?

Every time you use research or ideas that are not your own to cite, paraphrase, or
summarize, you must include an in-text citation.

2. What is a signal phrase?

Signal words are used to introduce or lead into a source or statement.

3. What usually goes in a parenthetical?

verb tense change

4. What do you do when there is no author?

start with title

5. How many lines are needed for a quote to become a block quote?
longer than 4

6. How do you add/omit words from a quote?

brackets
RC 3

Things to Remember:

• A drop quote is not a sentence: make sure all direct quotes are introduced with a signal word or are
weaved into your sentence. You’re using the quote as part of your essay, so it has to read as such.
• The parenthetical citation has to match your Works Cited page. If you don’t have an author on the
Works Cited page, just go to the next part of the entry, such as the title of the source.
• No comma is needed to separate the author’s last name and the page number.
• Signal words must match the tense of the essay: for example, if your essay is in the present, signal words
are in the present.

Activity 3: Circle the sentence that uses the parenthetical citation correctly.

1. A. “It took 20 years for the law to take effect” (Kaiser “What Happened to Justice?” 105).
B. “It took 20 years for the law to take effect” (Kaiser 105).

B. According to Herman Jenkins, 67% of the workers only put forth half of their effort (4).

square (O’Tulley).
B. On page 41, the author states that Lincoln was responsible for the adverse reaction in the town square
