The life of Coastal Area Bangladesh

Project Topic: How about the life in riverbank

erosion and salinity at coastal area Bangladesh
Sundarban Disaster
Sundarban is a mangrove area of near about 10,000 km^2. Despite preservation
commitments from both governments (Bangladesh and India), the Sundarbans are
under threat from both natural and human-made causes. We have pointed some recent
and very important issues about this Mangrove Area.

We identified these topic for our survey-

❑ Riverbank erosion
❑ Salinity
❑ Rising sea level
❑ Water pollution
❑ Natural disaster like cyclone, flood.
NB:
Due to our limited time and budget (one day survey program) we can’t work
with all these disaster. So, we chose River bank erosion and Salinity.
I am describing the reason of chose these two.
Riverbank Erosion

We all know more or less about river

erosion. Coastal area people suffer a
lot. A lot of people you can find there
who lost his home, lost his own land,
lost his cultivate field.

Once an Indian self taught famous

photographer and journalist Abhijit
Chakraborty took an interview of
Akhil Maity, a resident of
Gobardhanpur village near
Sundarban.
How measurable life they are leading…
Akhil Maity said, “If you ever need
an essay to be written on how to
rebuild houses, let me know.” With a
forced smile in a bid to hide his pain
he said, ‘I have rebuilt my house at
least 9 to 10 times. Can you see that
area on the river? I used to live there
once. The water keeps swallowing my
house, and we keep receding back.’

I am just telling about Akhil’s word. If

anyone go there he can find thousands
of Akhil who are loosing their life land
gradually.
Statistic about River bank erosion.
Data shows the Sundarbans have lost more than 400 square kilometres of land
in the last 100 years. Islands like Lohachara and Suparibhanga have totally
disappeared from maps. Erosion has reduced Ghoramara Island to a mere 4.43
square kilometres from 8.51 square kilometres. Once home to 40,000 people,
Ghoramara has faced mass exodus due to habitat loss. The 2011 census
counted only 5,000 odd people still struggling on the island.
I am telling the Indian part of Sundarban. Because the Bangladeshi survey data
is still now hidden from us.
So, our target is to reach Bangladeshi people of sundarban area and make a
clear data.
Now we jump the “Salinity” topic
Salinity is one of the most damageable
disaster for Environment. Though it does not
impact on salinity tolerance plant but it
impacts more on human life. The resident
people of Costal area are extremely affected
by salinity water. Agricultural activities are
truly destroying for salinity.
We have some statistics about salinity problem
in Bangladesh
The total amount of salinity affected land in Bangladesh was 83.3
million hectares in 1973, which had been increased up to 102
million hectares in 2000 and the amount has risen to 105.6 million
hectares in 2009 and continuing to increase, according to the country's
Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI).
What will we do….
We will go to that coastal area and make a good conversion with the people live
there. We have to know their problem like how they manage their drinking
water, how they cultivate food, and how this salinity makes their life miserable.

Then we will make a solid data about salinity problem of coastal area, problem
of drinking water, problem of agriculture, the management system of coastal
people’ life and the most important thing in our survey topic the impact of
salinity in our environment.

That’s all for us and by finishing all of our target successfully this survey will
be completed and ready to show the result.
