1 in 3 Pre-Conference and Activist Application

Cant get enough Urban Retreat? Interested in organizing around abortion to increase access and decrease stigma? This year, Advocates for Youth is piloting a new activist initiative as part of the roll-out of our new campaign: 1 in 3. 1 in 3 is a new campaign by Advocates for Youth, in partnership with Choice USA and Spiritual Youth for Reproductive Freedom (SYRF) to destigmatize abortion by creating a new dialogue with youth and our personal stories at the center. The campaign takes its name from the reality that 1 in 3 women in the United States will have an abortion in her lifetime. Advocates for Youth will select 24 young people to be 1 in 3 activists and to attend the 1 in 3 pre-conference, which will take place on Thursday, September 8thone day before the Urban Retreat. Selected participants must arrive in Washington, DC on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 7. Because we are hoping to roll out the campaign on college campuses, the 1 in 3 pre-conference is for college students only. All expenses related to the pre-conference are covered. *** Through the pre-conference as well as support throughout the year, 1 in 3 activists will gain: 1) a greater understanding of the history of abortion access and activism in the United States, 2) concrete skills to decrease stigma and organize around abortion access, and 3) support and resources to carry out the 1 in 3 campaign on their own campuses. 1 in 3 activists will work throughout the coming year to create and carry out campaign action plans including activities such as conducting a campus forum to highlight peoples experiences with abortion and access, hosting an abortion story speak-out, conducting video interviews to document the need for abortion and/or peoples experiences with abortion, hosting film screenings and discussions, creating and sharing blogs or vlogs (video logs), writing letters to the editor, conducting policy maker education, and collecting petition signatures, among others. 1 in 3 activists must demonstrate the interest, capacity, and resources to organize strategic, meaningful campaign actions on their college campuses. Please note that while these activities may coincide with and compliment your responsibilities under other Advocates for Youth programs, being a 1 in 3 activist involves additional responsibilities. *** To apply to be selected as a 1 in 3 activist and to attend the pre-conference, please answer the following questions. If you are selected as a 1 in 3 activist, what ideas do you have to carry out a campaign to destigmatize abortion on your campus? 5. What campus organizations or other resources (professors, student groups, community-based organizations, etc.) do you have connections to that could help
