The Diesel Engine Control Panel is designed to provide the starting current for diesel engine by charging
the batteries as well as monitor and control the diesel engine. The panel shall be floor-mounting type and
shall have IP-42 degree of protection, suitable for bottom cable entry. Lockable-hinged doors are provided
to give access to the internal equipment. Diesel engine control panel shall have two voltmeters (AC/DC),
two ammeters (AC/DC), auto manual selecting switch, indicating lamps, push buttons for start, stop and
reset, relays etc.
Working:
The closing of SW1 turns the Diesel Engine Panel ON . The lamp L1 indicates this.
The closing of SW2 turns the engine heater on. The lamp L2 indicates this.
STARTING POWER:
Uninterrupted starting DC power is made available to the engine by two sets of storage batteries associated
with battery chargers.
The closing of switch SW3 makes the 12V DC supply available to the control circuit. The lamp L3 glows,
thus indicating ‘control supply on’. The panel can be set to auto mode or manual mode by the auto-manual
selector switch AMS1. In auto mode, the relay RL1 energises after getting the ‘start signal’ from PLC.
Thus the lamp L4 glows, indicating ‘pump on demand’ and the pump gets started. In manual mode, the
relay RL1 will get energised only after the start push button PB1 is pressed.
PB2 is the manual stop button provided for the engine. However auto trip is provided on conditions such as
‘engine fail to start’ and ‘engine over speed’ and are indicated by lamps L9 and L10 respectively.
After RL1 was getting energised, the fuel solenoid valve gets activated. Initially the lube oil pressure is
very low. Hence the lube oil pressure switch (LOPS) operates and the relay RL3 gets energised. Lamp L6
indicates the condition “low lube oil”. As RL3 gets energised, Timers CR & SR get set. Timer CR is used
to set the on and off time of the cranking pulses. Timer SR is used to set the total time for 12 cranking
pulses. If the engine does not get started even after providing 12 cranking pulses, the Timer SR will get
activated. This will energise relay RL5 and the engine will be automatically tripped off. The lamp L9
indicates this condition.

If the engine gets started within 12 cranking pulses, the lube oil pressure will be built up. Hence the relay
RL3 will get de-energised. This will energise the relay RL2 and the lamp L5 will glow indicating “Engine
running”.
ENGINE OVERSPEED:
The over speed switch senses the speed of the engine. When the speed of the engine exceeds a certain limit,
the relay RL6 will get energised which will automatically trip of the engine. This condition is indicated by
lamp L10.
The Hooter can be set on or off by using the selector switch SW4. Lamp L11 indicates the off condition of
the hooter.
In on condition the hooter sounds in any one of the following conditions:
1) Engine fail to start
2) Engine over speed
