The Need of Seed Dispersal
• To grow well, plants need sufficient amounts of light, water,
mineral salts and space.
• If too many plants grow too close to one another in
overcrowded conditions, they will have to compete for light,
water, mineral salts and space.

The Need of Seed dispersal

How does overcrowding affect growing plants?

Overcrowding can cause plants to
grow tall and thin.

How will plants grow if they are not overcrowded?

Plants are likely to have thick and stronger

stems when they do not grow in an
overcrowded place.

To prevent overcrowding, seeds must be scattered

away from the parent plants and other seeds.

Seed Dispersal by Wind

• Seeds dispersed by wind are

usually small and light.
• The fruits or the seeds may be
fluffy or have wing-like or
parachute-like structures.
• These structures enable them
to float, spin or glide in the air
so that they can be carried by
the wind over long distances.

Seed Dispersal by Water

The fruits or seeds dispersed by water are

usually able to float on water.

A coconut fruit has a

fibrous husk that traps
air to help it float on
water.

Seed Dispersal by Animals
• Some fruits have hooks or stiff hairs that cling on to the fur or
feathers of passing animals or the clothes of humans.
• The animals and humans help disperse the seeds as they move
around.

Bur fruit Mimosa pudica fruit

• Some fruits are sweet and juicy.
• Animals eat them and disperse their
seeds by throwing them away after eating
the fruits.
• Sometimes, the animals swallow seeds
with the fruits.
• Some of these seeds are dispersed when
they pass out with animal droppings.

Seed Dispersal by Explosion

balsam fruit

• When ripe, some fruits can split open with an explosive force.
This can fling the seeds far away to disperse them.
• They usually have hard and dry coverings that split open.
