SS 205 World History 2 (Modern and Contemporary Era)
Learning Activity 6 Industrialism and the Race for Empire

1. How did industrialization contribute to city growth?

Industrialization open up many opportunities that lead to city growth. As
many factories are rapidly growing, manufacturing of goods moves to
central location and people started to live within the areas. With many
factories, entrepreneurs started to build businesses so  there were so
many jobs that opened up and lot of people came into the cities, making
the population grow rapidly. With this, living conditions developed and
people are being competent to seek jobs and working conditions are now
centralized for factory working jobs making a city growth possible.

2. As a British government official during the age of Industrial Revolution, write a

letter to an official in a nonindustrial nation explaining how railroads has change
Britain.
My Fellow Official,
I'm writing this letter while still on the road rather than walking kilometres.
It never ceases to amaze me how much easier it is to travel within
England without wasting time and effort by because of the railroads. I can
now go to different regions of the country in less than a day, and the
passenger is no longer just me. Each car has the capacity to carry over a
hundred passengers. Not only did the conveyance move people, but it
also transported materials and animals. We are no longer required to take
breaks between visits as we were when walking or riding horses. We can
also eat and do other things without being concerned about the bumps on
the road.
In addition, I was able to take in the scenery. Even if we are not traveling
very quickly, using the newly constructed trains is still a practical way to
travel.
I cannot wait for the other developments to happen. I am also looking
forward to be able to take a trip with you by means of the railroads.

3. In your own understanding, explain what is imperialism and what are the positive
effects of imperialism?
Imperialism is the policy of a country that seeks to expand their authority
by conquering other countries and then being dominant in the means of
political and economic aspect. The positive effects of imperialism can be
seen in the countries that a nation conquered. Roads, canals, and
railways were built by the nations. They were shown the telegraph and
newspapers, schools were constructed for them, the blessing of
civilization was bestowed upon them, and they were generally
economized. Humanitarian efforts in some colonies improved sanitation
and provided hospital and schools. Lastly, new crops; tools, and farming
methods were used to help boost food production. These adjustments
resulted in fewer deaths in smaller colonies and an overall better standard
of living.
