The teacher will sing a song first followed by the student entitled “Number Relations” with a
simple step. The teacher will execute the steps first before the students. This song will give an
idea about relation symbols.

symbols.
Instruction:
1. The teacher will give a rambled letter.

2. The students will then arrange the rambled letter to form a word.
3. After arranging, the group will then shout the words formed and will give a simple
action based on the word formed.
4. The group who can done it first will be given an extra point.

Comparing numbers is an important part of building a student’s number sense.

Number sense is the ability for a student to recognize a number, it’s value and its
relationship with other numbers.
In comparing numbers, we use relation symbol such as less than, greater than or
equals.
Less than (<) – the less than symbol points to the left or making L shape using your
left hand.
Greater than (>) – the greater than symbol points to the right or making an L shape
using your right hand.
Equals (=) – the same number or equal number
To easily identify which relation symbol we should use, remember this important
trick.
Always see first the place value of a number.
Note: the open side of the symbol is facing the larger number and the arrowhead is
pointing at the smaller number.
Now let us have an example on how we compare numbers using relation symbol.

Guide questions:
1. How important is comparing numbers are?
2. What should we use in comparing numbers?
3. How will you identify if the number is less than, greater than or equal?
4. What are the things you should remember to identify which relation symbol you
should use?
The class will be divided into four groups and will have an activity. The teacher will prepare a
set of numbers and a place value chart to be use in comparing number with the relation
symbol.

Instruction:
1. Each group will be given a place value chart.

2. The numbers given by the teacher will be placed on the place value chart.
Group 1 Group 2 Group 3

Group 4

3. After placing the numbers, they will then identify what relation symbol will be use.
4. The team who would done the activity first will be given extra points.
Individual Activity
Use <, >, or = to compare numbers. Write your answers in a one whole
sheet of paper.

1. 34, 385 _____ 34, 354

2. 23, 768 _____ twenty-three thousand, seven hundred eighty

4.6 Assessment

4. 96, 500 _____ eight-nine thousand, five hundred forty

5. sixty-eight thousand, six hundred sixty-eight ______ 68, 686

4.7 Assignment Answer assignment in our Mathematics book on page 34. Write it in your
(2 minutes) assignment notebook.
4.8 Concluding Activity
It is important to use the appropriate relation symbol in comparing numbers.
