I. OBJECTIVES
The learners demonstrate understanding of a simple DC
A. Content Standards circuit and the relationship between electricity and
magnetism in electromagnets
The learner should be able to propose device using
B. Performance Standards
electromagnet that is useful for home school or community
What’s new?
B. Development
What I know?
Fill in the blanks with the correct word. Choose your answer
inside the box.
What’s in?
Circuit – is a close path that allows electricity to flow from one point
to another.
Series circuit – bulbs are connected one after the other in one
chain. The electric current flows through a single path, so when
one bulb is loosened or busted all the other bulbs in this circuit will
not light anymore.
What is it?
1. In a parallel circuit, when one bulb is burn out, the other bulbs
will still light up.
2. A parallel circuit has only one path of electricity.
3. At home, it is better to use series circuit.
4. In a series circuit, when one bulb is burned out, all the other
bulbs will not light up.
5. In a series circuit, electricity can still flow through the other
pathways.
C. Engagement
What’s more?
BUILD A CIRCUIT
Science Skills: Observing, Inferring, Communicating
Materials Needed:
1/8 illustration boards
electric tape
aluminum foil or pieces of electrical wires
Two 1.5 V AA
batteries
4 small light bulbs
What to Do:
Note: Be careful in handling materials especially the bulb
Setup A
1. Construct a series circuit and model the diagram you made
2. Try removing one of the bulbs. Did the other bulb still light
up?
Setup B
1. Construct a parallel circuit similar to the illustration/diagram
you had previously made.
2. Try removing one of the bulbs. Did the other bulb still light
up?
Questions:
1. What may happen if you add another bulb to both of your
setups? Why?
2. What may happen if the filament of one of the bulbs in your
first setup melts? Why?
3. What may happen if the filament of one of the bulbs in your
second melts? Why?
GROUP ACTIVITY
The Artist!
Make a slogan/poster showing safety precautions when
using electricity.
The Singers!
Compose a song on how do we value the importance of
safety in using electricity.
The Poets!
Compose a short poem of the importance of electricity in
our lives
D. Assimilation
What I have learned?
What may happen if you add another bulb to both of your setups?
Why?
How does series circuit differ from parallel circuit?
If you were the owner of an establishment what type of circuit
would you prefer?
Why do most homes and buildings prefer parallel circuit?
Generalizations
In a series circuit, all components are connected end-to-end,
forming a single path for current flow. While in a parallel circuit, all
components are connected across each other, forming exactly two
sets of electrically common points.
1. Mary Ann noticed that a set of ten bulbs in her Christmas tree
lights did not light up when it was turned on. What could be a
probable cause of this?
a. Small wires are used. c. Small bulbs are used.
b. There are bulbs in the strand. d. There is one defective bulb in
the set
2. What will happen to the other bulbs in a series connection when
one bulb is removed? The other bulbs will
________________________.
a. light b. not light c. have dim light d. have
bright light
3. What will happen to the other bulbs in a parallel connection
when one bulb is removed?
a. few bulbs will light. c. A few bulbs will no longer
light.
b. The other bulbs will still light. d. The other bulbs will no longer
light.
4. Which of the following measures can prevent fire caused by
electricity?
a. Have a regular inspection of electrical cords
b. Avoid walking under low dangling wires.
c. Touch a switch with dry hands.
d. Do not leave sockets empty.
5. In a series connection, why do remaining bulbs not light up
when one bulb is taken out of its holder?
a. The other bulbs will not light.
b. The other bulbs were burnt out.
c. The path of electric current was renewed.
d. The path of electric current became incomplete
