2. If I rent an unfurnished apartment, how much will I need to spend for furniture?

- You can look for cheap furniture online (Ebay Kleineanzeigen), in IKEA or in flea markets. Here is an
estimation for costs in IKEA:

3. If I cannot come to Munich before September/October to search for an accommodation and to go to

viewings, what shall I do?

-You can try to ask a friend or a faculty buddy to go to a viewing. It is not an ideal solution, because
landlords want to see a potential tenant (not his or her representative), but it is worth trying. Another
possibility are rental agencies.

4. Is it possible to organize a Whatsapp or a Skype call instead of going in person?

-It is possible, but not safe. In the past some students got scammed, although they had a video call
before renting an accommodation.

5. I have sent a lot of e-mails, but still do not get a reply. What shall I do?

-Be the first to answer to an advertisement

-Introduce yourself properly and promise to provide certain documents (confirmation of your ability to
pay, liability insurance, recommendations etc.)

-Reassure that you are interested in this very offer and can come to a viewing any time

-Mention TUM, but do not mention Erasmus

-If nothing helps, do not mention the duration of your stay in Munich and go for an unlimited rental
agreement. ATTENTION: if you sign an open-end rental agreement (NOT for a certain period of time),
pay attention to a PERIOD OF NOTICE (KÜNDIGUNGSFRIST). It is a time period during which you
have to inform the owner, before you terminate your rental agreement. A normal period of notice for
Munich is a 3 months-period. This should be mentioned in your rental agreement and you have to
inform the owner in a written form.

6. How can I make sure that I get my refundable deposit back?

- Keep the accommodation VERY clean

-AIR the accommodation every day, because the mould formation in German houses is very probable
due to a good isolation of windows

-Make pictures, when you move in and view the accommodation with your landlord

-Discuss the back payment of the refundable deposit at the beginning of your stay

7. I cannot see landlords’ contact details in TUM Living (https://living.tum.de/listings?viewMode=list).

How can I get them?

-Send a link with an accommodation offer, in which you are interested in, to
incoming_help@zv.tum.de.
