PHYSIC LESSON PLAN

TEACHER : Rizka Aulia Wardhani

SCHOOL : National Leader School College
DATE : Monday, August 8, 2022
CLASS : Eleven Science
TIME : 135 minutes
UNIT : Light
LESSON TOPIC : Refraction of Light

Objectives
Students will be able to
 recognize that light travels at different speeds in different media,
 recognize that the wavelength of light is different in different media but that frequency is
constant,
 recognize that the greater the refractive index of a substance, the slower light travels in the
substance,
 recognize that light incident nonnormally on a media boundary changes propagation
direction,
 define angle of refraction,
 use Snell’s law to determine incident and refracted angles and values of refractive index.

Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
 we are able to see because light that is incident on object illuminate them
 wavelength,
 the fact that 𝑐=𝑓𝜆,
 the idea that light rays travel in straight lines.

2. Textbook ( pp. 229 – 236 )

Concept or Principle
Light exhibits wave properties, one of which is refraction. Refraction is the bending or change in
direction of a wave motion when there is a sudden change in the speed of the wave. This sudden
change occurs when light changes media of different optical densities. It is necessary for students
understand that this phenomenon of waves also occurs with light and there are many examples
and applications of it.

Misconception / Alternate Ideas:

1. Light travels in a straight line at all times.
2. Student may mistakenly draw light rays that are directed from the eyes of viewer to an
object
3. The definition of refraction of a medium should be based on the ratio of speed of light in
sin i
vacuum to the medium instead of the ratio
sin r

Specific Objectives
At the end of this lesson, students should
Classification Learning Type
be able to :
1. Define the term refraction of light. Cognitive Remembering
2. State the relationship between optical

density and speed of light.
3. Determine the path of a light ray Evaluating
through materials of different optical
densities.
4. Construct a ray diagram showing
refraction in a rectangular block and a Applying
triangular prism.
5. Label the normal, the incident ray, the
refracted ray, the angle of incidence and

the angle of refraction on any ray
diagram with refraction.
6. Justify that light is actually able to bend

under certain conditions.
7. Demonstrate lateral displacement and

prism.

Introduction:
1. Video 1
Play the first video that demonstrate about water marbles in air and in water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=635-LOiONYU
Student should observe the video
Elicit responses from the student on why the water marbles are not visible in the water
This will serve as a lesson opener to introduce the concept of refractive index
2. Video 2
Play the second video that demonstrate refraction of light in the water. As water is
poured into a cup, a coin becomes visible due to the bending of light when it leaves the
water surface http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBbMQHZOoHs
Ask students to think of possible reason it happened.

Transitional statement:
Teacher introduces the topic of the lesson as the refraction or bending of light.
Development:
Teacher allow student to formulate the definition for the refraction of light using the
previous observations.
Teacher ask students to identify the media involved in the demonstration and list them in
order of increasing optical density. (Air, water and glass)
Teacher ask students if light is able to travel through a vacuum and to give a reason for their
answer. (Students’ expected responds: “yes, sunlight”)
Teacher explain about refraction of light
Watch the YouTube video that show the refraction of light. Pause the video at the suitable
intervals to point out the angle of incidence, the angle of refraction and the normal

Consolidation:
Teacher recaps the notes covered
Teacher gives students a sheet with a light ray entering a triangular glass prism and ask the
students to complete the path of the light ray and label the rays, the normal and the angles.
On completion of the diagram teacher provides the students with a triangular glass prism to
verify their drawing.
