CHAPTER II: TEACHING OBSERVATION

INTRODUCTION
In order to properly train its students, the htttc of Bambili has set up an
observation internship for students at the 300 and 500 level for a period of one
month. It is a question here of observing how we teach and preparing for the
practical training for next year. Here we will describe this observation phase.

1. Definition of teaching practice

Teaching observation is a period in all teachers’ training schools like HTTTC
Bambili in which a student teacher is offered the opportunity to acquire practical
experiences of directing the learning or a group of learners over a specific period
of time and to participate actively in the various activities involved in the actual
teaching situation.

Teaching observation can also be defined as; ″an activity design to help
bring out the hidden skills as well as impact the practical aspect of teaching in a
student teacher″. The teaching observation itself is a practical pedagogy that
student teachers must undergo so as to fulfil one of the requirements for the
award of DIPET II.

2. Teaching observation seminar held at Lychee technique de Dschang

On Monday 03 February 2020 at 09:05 AM in the staff’s room, we held a

pedagogic meeting with the principal Mr. KEMKOUM MARTIN and some
of the staffs of the institution. The principal started with a word of welcome,
followed by the attendance whereby he called the names of the student teachers

7
present and took note for those that were absent. He then introduced himself and
the other administrative staffs that were present amongst whom were the Vice
Principal of Industrial and Commercial Mr. TCHANKIO and Mr. DJOYA
respectively. According to Mr. KEMKOUM MARTIN, teaching practice is
“a form of teaching by learning on how to teach”. He then stressed the purpose
of the meeting which was to outline requirements for the Code of Conduct, in
which he warned the student teachers to know that they are not here to challenge
with the cooperating teacher. Also in his list of points, he touched on the
dressing code; student teachers should be dressed decently. And that the student
teachers should master the subject matter in order to win the student’s interest
and respect, and the language on campus were to be either English or French but
the lecture language was to be French uniquely.
He ended the session with the announcement that the first week was for
bilingualism. The meeting ended at exactly 12:30pm.

3. First three days of observation by the student teacher

My first day of teaching practice observation in Lychee technique de

Dschang was on Monday, 13th of 03 February 2020 in Terminal (MA). The
classes were taught by my cooperating teacher. When we entered into the
classrooms, the students got up and greeted us and we also greeted the students,
he gave me the floor and I introduced myself to the students before he then
introduced the lessons.

In Terminal (MA), the lesson taught was “was the overview of last month
work” and I observed the following points...

 The class was made up of 2 students.

 The teacher divided the chalkboard into three equal parts. The first part to
the left carried the “Titles and plan of the lesson”, the middle part was the
8
working area and carried the “Title of the subject, Nutrition” and the last
part to the right had the date of the day well written and underlined, also
carried “Vocabulary and difficult words” of the students.
 The teacher had a good mastery of the lesson content, classroom
management and names of the students and the students were very
interactive.
 There was good time management and the lesson ended with no
assignment given to the students
 The lesson was well introduced and the chalkboard was well managed.
 The teacher was well dressed. The teacher had a good mastery of the
lesson content, classroom management and names of the students and
the students were very interactive.
 He did not move about in all the rows of the class to check the students
 He did not appreciate all the correct answers from the students.
 The class was at the beginning difficult to manage but as the lesson
went on, the teacher was able to manage it. Some of the students came
30 minutes late into the classroom and were sent away
 The class was interactive and students asked questions and responded
to questions asked by the teacher SS
 The teacher was well dressed and his voice could be heard right behind
the classroom. The teacher moved to the extreme of the classroom during
explanations but never moved in all the rows of the classroom.
 The teacher copied the notes on the board and the students took them
down into their exercise note books. His writing on the board was visible
from behind and by all the students.

CHAPTER III: EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
1. The national bilingualism day (02/02/2018)
Friday 8th February, 2020 was the National Bilingualism Day all over the
nation. Just like other schools in Cameroon, Lychee technique de Dschang
joined in the celebration to give it a grand occasion. It was celebrated under the
theme “Bilingualism, base of national unity and living together”. The various
activities took place; the national anthem was sang in the English language ,
special numbers presented by the students, a traditional dance “BAMILEKE”
was played, the journalism club presented the new in French and English
languages and others. At the end, Mr and Miss Bilingualism of Lychee
technique de Dschang for the year 2020 was nominated and awarded with a gift.

2. Youth Day
The theme of the celebration this year 2020 was “Youth
multiculturalism, peace and national unity”. The youth week at Lychee
technique de Dschang as everywhere in the country started on 3 rd February with
several activities like match pass practice, singing and dancing. It was so tied
due to the fact that it was somehow joined to the bilingualism week. It ended by
a match pass that happen on 11th February 2020 but it was not as effective as
other years because of the current crisis.

3. Mother Tongue Day (21st February 2018)

The occasion started at 1:30PM with an opening prayer in Manta, just like
all the other schools in Cameroon, this school was not an exemption. It took
place in class two commercial. The day was marked with the following
activities;
 The National Anthem was sang in Manta language by the class four
industrial students

10
 Poems, works of arts, crafts, and traditional dance were carried out in
manta dialect by the students from that origin.
 A speech was given in the mother tongue (manta) by Anim Christopher
 A debate “should technical education be encouraged in emergence
Cameroon?” took place same in the vernacular language between the
principal of the school and a student who were for against and for
respectively. The principal who was against had 2.5/4 and the student for
had ¾

The occasion ended at 3:25PM and students went to their classes and were
advised to try to communicate in the Manta dialect and others.

CHAPTER IV : DIFFICULTIES ENCOUTER AND
RECOMMENDATION

1. DIFFICULTIES ENCOUTERS

There is never a perfect work without difficulties and challenges involved.

Therefore, we all know that teaching profession is not easy; one must initially
follow a formation to be able to transmit the knowledge to learners. This training
course enabled me to discover some field realities compared to what I had
thought at the beginning. I ended up understanding that while one tries hard for
many others, one is appreciated sometimes little and if one tries to make error,
all the efforts previously provided are quickly forgotten and this time one is
shown an indexed.

 The lack of respect of some of the students with regard to the trainees
during the course
 There was no student with a text book in computer science to read or to
do homework. This made teaching and learning tedious because the
students barely did the home work given to them and that led to poor
performance.
 Some of the teachers and student teachers used some minutes of my
period. Due to poor organization of the time table concerning the student
teacher’s evaluation. They treated some of the students unfairly and there
was lack of humor amongst the teacher/student teachers and the students.
 Most of the equipment in the laboratory were bad

12
 Another weight I encountered was at the level of lesson preparation and
time management.
 Due to the socio political crisis the turn out of the student population was
not that encouraging and the teaching practice was not effective.

2. RECOMMENDATION
I will like to recommend this section in five paragraphs which concerns the
teachers, students, parents and the school administrators (Lychee technique de
Dschang and H.T.T.T.C Bambili)
For the teachers, they should love and respect their students by creating a
friendly atmosphere in classroom, develop a sense of humor, warmth and
humanity to students and while not to colleagues. They should equally respect
the time table for their lessons.
For the students, they should avoid doing things that can disturb them
emotionally during classes. They should read their note books frequently and not
only when a test is announced or during examinations period to ensure
proficiency. I equally recommend strongly that they should work cooperatively
with fellow students because peer learning ensures efficiency.
For the parents, they should advice their children to read and even
do homework at home. Parents should provide their children with the
basic school needs or materials like textbooks, books, pens and even
home computers for efficient studies.
For the Lychee technique de Dschang school administrators, I will
recommend that the preps should not only be for the examination classes but
also could be extended to the non-examination classes at least once in either a
week or couple of days a week to foster the performance of all the school. They
should equally revise the school time table to avoid clashes and poor time
management. They teachers to print their lesson notes freely.
Lastly, I will equally like to recommend that the H.T.T.T.C Bambili
authorities should make known to the student teachers, the period of pedagogic

13
evaluation and if possible the day for each practicing school in advanced to
avoid rushed and poor lesson preparation and mastery. This will enable the
student teachers to be prepared to print their lessons without much financial
stress

CONCLUSION
My internship took place in the months of February. During this I have
realised the capital role played in pedagogic Training experiences. It gave me
the opportunities to cultivate the credential values inherent in the domain of
teaching, to transmit knowledge with the help of the directives given by all
Department. Despite the difficulties I encountered, it ended in the very good
gesture. It was a moment of experiment because it was one period of real contact
and checking on the ground of the received theoretical lesson. This moment
enabled me truly to take note of the duties and the rights of any teacher, the
techniques and working methods which will enable me leave the theory.

It was also a moment of observations. Insofar as it did not only temporally place
me in front of my responsibilities for tomorrow, but it also allowed me to leave
the seat of the student of the classroom, to integrate that of teacher and trainer
leaving oneself the difficulties one has to prepare and explain a lesson. Thus the
teaching practice carried out in Lychee technique de Dschang gave me the
opportunity to become a complete teacher.

Like any human work, it could not be perfect. For this reason I remain open to
remarks, with criticisms and suggestions which I will make it possible in the
future to improve the negative points.
