MaxiCharger

The MaxiCharger’s integrated PME Fault Detection removes the need for an
earth rod which saves you time and money.

Protective Multiple Earthing, PME, (technically known as TN-C-S) is one of the most
common means of power distribution and earthing within buildings. In the MaxiCharger, the
Neutral and the Earth connectors are joined together at the incoming electricity supply,
forming a single combined conductor, known as the PEN.
To meet current BS 7671: 2018 Amendment 1 regulations, EV charging units should
incorporate a means of guarding against the break in the PEN conductor, which could result
in the casing of the unit, or the casing of other devices connected on the same circuit, to
become dangerously live under load. This can be either provided by installing a local
additional earthing rod, or by incorporating a means of detection loss of the PEN conductor
from within the EV charger.
The MaxiCharger has an integrated detection circuit to guard against the loss of the
PEN, which means that installing local earthing rods is not required on both single-phase
and three-phase units. The PME fault detection will automatically isolate the charger once
the voltage to the neutral range is outside the 207-253V range on a single-phase system, or
if the neutral to earth voltage is above 70V on an unbalanced three-phase system.
The MaxiCharger also incorporates 6mA DC earth-leakage detection, which when used
in conjunction with the regulatory RCD-A, provides the conventional earth-leakage protection
to meet current regulations.
