1. introduction

Self-medication has traditionally been defined as “the taking of

drugs, herbs or home remedies on one's own initiative, or on the
advice of another person, without consulting a doctor.”1
Families, friends, neighbors, the pharmacist, previous prescribed
drug, or suggestions from an advertisement in newspapers are
common sources of self-medications.2
Now-a-days many governments encouraging self-medication of
their citizens to manage minor illness, self-medication help in
reducing coast of treatment, traveling time and doctor time.
Although there are some advantages of self-medication, there
are also serious disadvantages, as a waste of resources,
resistance of pathogens to antimicrobial drugs which can cause
serious health hazards worldwide, especially in developing
countries where the antimicrobial drug can be taken from
pharmacies without a prescription.
Governments should take serious steps to regulate self-
medication for example by providing safe drugs with full
instruction about using them and doctors in anytime people need
to consult them.34
Self-medication is very common and have a lot of reason like
lack of time lack of health service, availability of the drug in
places other than pharmacies, misbelieves and feeling of
sympathy toward family members in sickness.5
