CHAPTER 1-INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the study
Burglary, also called breaking and entering and sometimes housebreaking, is
illegally entering a building or other areas to commit a crime. Usually that offence is theft,
robbery or murder, but most jurisdictions include others within the ambit of burglary. To
commit burglary is to burgle. It occurs when someone intentionally enters a place without
the consent of the person and with the intent to steal or commit a felony. Burglary in a
dwelling is a universally frequently occurring type of property crime with the high impact
to the victims (Mawby, 2001). The consequences of burglary in term of value may vary
widely in different context. As stated by Schubert J. (2020). There are usually up to four
degrees of burglary in state criminal law codes, although some states may have fewer
degrees. The first-degree burglary involves breaking and entering a dwelling or residence
with the intention to steal or to commit a violent crime. An example of burglary in the
first degree would be breaking and entering into another person's home with the intent to
commit murder. Second-degree burglary involves similar circumstances as first-degree
burglary. However, the burglary is typically performed at a different, non-residential type

of property, such as a retail location or a warehouse. Third degree- and fourth-degree
burglaries are less severe crimes comparatively. These two types of burglaries usually
involve breaking and entering with the intention of committing a non-violent crime. The
two element of burglary are the trespass and breaking. The trespass signifies that it must
occur without the consent of the victim. If the thief gains entry by misrepresenting
his or her identity, the element of trespass is satisfied, as there is no consent to entry
Burglary in the Philippines is one of the concerns facing every local, especially
those living in the country's larger urban cities. The Akyat-Bahay is the most common
robbery scheme in the Philippines. This crime is usually orchestrated by three to five
people (Vince M.,2019). These thieves target homes that are unoccupied especially
during the holiday season like Christmas, Holy Week, and Summer Vacation and during
severe weather conditions or typhoons when members of the household can barely notice
break-ins into their homes. The gang also employs children who can easily enter homes
illegally through tight spaces. According to the Philippines Crime Statistics robbery and
burglary Rate (2020) Philippines burglary and robbery rate fluctuated substantially in
recent years, it tended to increase through 2003 - 2017 period ending at 15.3 cases per
100,000 populations in 2017. In 2018, burglary accounted for 31 percent of the entire
criminal cases in the Philippines. The overall number of burglary cases amounted to 23.6
thousand in that year (Statista Research Department 2020).

This study aims to make a security alarm that can lessen the number of burglary
cases in the Philippines. A security alarm is a system designed to detect intrusion, such as
unauthorized entry, into a building or other areas such as a home or school. (Fishbein C.
C. 2021). The most basic alarm consists of at least one sensor to detect trespassers and an
alerting device to indicate the intrusion. In our study we will be using Ev3 Lego Mind
storm robotic kit which has the ultrasonic sensor that will be used to detect any presence
or movement to prevent burglary. The alarm system devices can be disconnected and
installed in any part of the house where a person can enter the examples are the windows
and doors. It is easy to relocate both; wireless as well has wired alarm security systems.
The alarm system will alert you when the property is unattended and invaded by thieves.
These smart, easy to learn devices notify you when intruders attack your property while
you are away or sleeping. When the security alarm detects movement or opening of doors
and windows, it will produce a loud noise to alert those nearby and the burglar of the
unauthorized entry. Statistics show that 46% of burglars would tend to avoid homes with
alarm systems or sirens (Elvia J. 2020).With this security alarm, cases of burglary will be
lessen and valuable things will be safe.

B. Review of literature
This chapter presents the relevant literature that the researcher considered in
strengthening the importance of the present study to fully understand the research for
better comprehension of the study.
I. Local
In the Philippines burglary is one of the concerns facing every local, especially those
living in the country's larger urban cities. The goal of the study was to create a prototype
that would provide an alternative method of locking and unlocking door locks using
Bluetooth technology, as well as the ability to send messages in the event of an intruder

When the object is a valuable family heirloom, the tragedy is amplified. While a house
safe can help protect priceless things, a home security system includes an alarm that can
deter many would-be criminals and alert the authorities if a break-in is attempted
(Katherine, 2020).

schools to combat the rising number of incidences of theft and robbery of laptops and
other educational equipment. (Filane 2018).
As reported by Iris Mascardo, in 2021 two houses in Sitio Tipolo, Barangay Bato
in Toledo City, Cebu was reportedly burglarized by 12 armed robbers late Tuesday
evening. The robbers take away cash, jewelry and gadgets that cost around 350,000 pesos
from three victims. (Mascardo, 2021). The report is one of the evidences that theft occurs
in the Philippines. To minimize the risk of the household from danger, security system
device used to protect houses from any dangerous acts. According to CNN Philippines,
the theft and robbery cases drop by 94% after cctv cams or security system installed. It
went down to 50 to three to 10 cases; an over 80 to 94% decrease. The purpose of the
installation of security system is to ensure the safety of the residents. (Ilas, 2016).
Alarm systems are one of the most common kinds of security systems in the
Philippines. It will work once a certain trigger happens. Home security alarms trigger

when doors open, when glass works, or even when it senses motion in its vicinity. (Elid,
2018).
Nowadays, installing home security alarms is very important. It can help to secure
our belongings and protect our family. The home alarm system will notify the
homeowners if an unauthorized entry attempts into the area. As recommended to the
homeowners, use a high quality IT equipment like remote home control that can connect
to their mobile phones to ensure the security and to watch over their house. The “Remote
Home Security System Using Open-Source Electronic Platform” was the proposed study
presented by Ravel V. De Guzman, Clarrisa Joy M. Lubrido and Claire N. Reyes (2019).
Having a motion-sensored around your home increased home security and can save
electrical bills. Most of the time, the burglars or the robbers attack every night when
everyone is deep in sleep and all lights are turned off. The motion sensors gives alarm to
the homeowner when unauthorized personnel enter their house. The device is essential to
the homeowner especially when they’re away from home. This method is quiet effective.

speed. The owner of the device can roam around without getting disconnected to the
network. In terms of installation speed, a wireless system reduces cables. It is also be

advanced door alarms these days use wireless technology to easily install. It also have an
alarm system, motion sensors and access control. The advanced door and window alarms
provide stronger and reliable protection. Door Alarm Sensors Types (2020). Ultrasonic
sensor detects any presence of anybody at the door. It can be installed near the door.
Whenever somebody opens the door, the buzzer starts beeping. The sensor module
consists of ultrasonic transmitter, receiver and the control circuit. (Kumar, 2016).
Having a home security system installed has a potential to scare away the burglars. One
of those security systems is the motion detectors. This security system can detect
intruders through movement without the use of security cameras. (Elid, 2019). DILG
launches “Safe PH Project” in Marikina. They put a security device or a CCTV camera.
The goal of this project is to reduce crime rate and improve emergency response time.
The government expected to reduce the crime rate by 15% and improve response time by
25%. (Caliwan, 2019).
II. Foreign
Lego mind storms are educational robots that evolved through different
generations. EV3 is the latest and the most powerful model in terms of processing power
and connectivity (Lepuschitz W. et.al ,2018).
Based on the study of Griffin T. (2014) the EV3 set includes EV3 intelligent brick,
three motors, and several sensors. Using EV3 motors you can turn and ordinary LEGO

model into a moving robot. The EV3 sensor allows your robot to react on its environment
according to you commands. The EV3 sensors include the ultrasonic, infrared, touch,
color, gyro and rotation sensors. Since 1932, Lego has been a popular toy. "LEGO" is an
acronym for "leg godt," which means "play well" in Danish. A student that is working to
solve problems presented to them in today's LEGO-based learning and teaching
environments were often unaware of how much time had passed, as per studies. The
results indicate that robotics education based on Lego Mind storms EV3 had a significant
impact on students' perceptions of scientists. (Cavas et.al ,2020)
As specified by Montes N. et.al (2021) mobile robot platforms have become
increasingly important in education over the last few years. LEGO Robots and
MATLAB/Simulink, for example, are primarily used in universities to improve the
teaching experience. Because the EV3 version is so new, most LEGO systems used in the
literature are based on NXT. Unlike previous versions, the EV3 enables the creation of
real-time applications for teaching a wide range of subjects and conducting research
experiments.
As elaborated by the study of MD Ahmad et.al (2019) The most basic definition
of a security system is derived from its name; it is literally a means or method of securing
something through a system of connected components and devices. Because the rate of
theft and abduction in some parts of the world is increasing by the day, it is possible to
secure people's lives, industries, schools, organizations, and homes using an alarm

security system that will monitor, guide, and protect against burglars and abductors,
thanks to the latest technological advancements. The security alarm system, also known
as home automation, is a system that allows you to control lighting, appliances,
temperature, and other aspects of your home from a central location system, in order to
provide greater relaxation, comfort, and convenience security, as well as efficiency.
As stated by Mundher et.al (2019) Surveillance camera systems are common in
homes, businesses, and other places. These systems, with all of their capabilities and
features, protect those who use them. Based on the Microsoft Kinect sensor, a home
security alarm system was designed and implemented in this project; it can detect
intruders and can respond to it on real time. If an intrusion is detected, the system sends
an SMS to the authorized user as a notification. Furthermore, as soon as the intrusion is
detected, pictures will be taken with the Kinect's RGB camera. These images will be
emailed to the authorized user and saved on the local hard drive. At the same time, the
proposed system makes a loud noise to scare away intruders. The proposed system could
be used in a variety of settings, including homes, offices, warehouses, banks, and
hospitals.
As studied by Yansong Liu and Li Zhu (2019) the security of computer networks
has become increasingly important with the ongoing development of computer networks.
Traditional intrusion detection and alarm technology is insufficient for intrusion detection.
For intrusion behaviors such as denial of service attacks, the neural network-based

intrusion detection and alarm system has a higher detection rate and lower false alarm
rate, as well as higher detection ability for unknown attack behaviors.
As specified by Blair J. (2021) the cost of a home security system may be the most
significant disadvantage of having home alarm system. The initial cost of installing the
system is high, but security companies also charge a daily or monthly fee for monitoring
services. These fees can quickly add up, putting a strain on your finances if you're on a
budget. Some businesses require a contract, which means you'll be obligated to pay for
the duration of the agreement. In addition, some police departments may charge you for
multiple false alarms. So you’ll need to consult with your alarm company to figure out
what's causing the false alarms so you can make adjustments. A home alarm system can
provide security and peace of mind, but it also has the potential to be annoying. False
alarms are common in the workplace. Before you have a chance to explain the mistake to
your security company, the police or fire department may be dispatched to your home.
As enumerated by Torres K. (2020) Installing, arming, disarming, paying monthly
fees, and dealing with false alarms are all things that come with monitored security
systems, and they may make you wonder if they're worth the time and effort. As you
consider how to best protect your valuables and loved ones, this is a good question to ask.
Having a security system not only protects you, but helps deter crime and creates a safer
neighborhood for everyone. Perhaps the most important benefit of all is the sense of
security and comfort that an alarm system provides. In addition to being safe, the

assurance that you are safe will enable you to be more productive, healthy, and focused
that makes room for peace of mind.

invasions require some form of forced entry, whether it's breaking a window, picking a
lock, or kicking in the door. Pry bars, pliers, screwdrivers, and small hammers are the
most common tools used for breaking in. All of the tools are easily concealed and very
common, making them more difficult to identify down.
As explored in the research of Westbrook T. (2021) As advanced technologies
become more affordable and easier to use, the world is becoming increasingly digitalized.
The rise of digitalization raises many questions about whether the “benefits” and
convenience of connectivity outweigh the alleged “risks.” People's overdependence,
reliability, and trust in technologies to provide safety, security, and privacy in their homes
and workplaces; people's general lack of security consciousness and security hygiene;
and the unsuitability of technologies and their strategic use to mitigate crime and
safety/health risk are all examples of such risks. Sensor systems are becoming more
common in a variety of fields, and the Internet of Things has recently generalized them.
This widespread deployment, however, raises serious security concerns. We create
security techniques for sensor systems and the Internet of Things, addressing all phases of

Alarm are one of the most effective tool to keep houses, building, bank, malls, etc.
safe from any crime such as burglary, robbery or even murder. They are design to prevent
unauthorized entry specially at times when there is no one at the house or the place or if
the owner is busy or sleeping, so they can have peace of mind about thier family's safety
and get a good night's sleep (Blair J. 2021).
It can also help protect irreplaceable items. A home security system has an alarm
that can scare off many would-be burglars and can notify the local authorities if someone
does attempt a break-in. (Torres K. 2020).
Having a security system not only protects you, but also creates a safer
neighborhood for everyone. According to the study conducted by Rutgers F. (2009) as
the number of home security systems increased in an area, the number of residential
robberies decreased in that area, even for people who didn’t have their own security
system.
According to FBI Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics (2019). the rate of property
crime specially the Burglary has dropped from 701 per 100,000 people to 542 per
100,000 people in 2015 that is equivalent to a 22% change, because of the help of
security alarms.

C.Statement of the problem
The Study about the use of Ev3 Lego Mind storm as an security alarm aims to
make an security alarm that can avoid burglary to lessen the number of burglary in the
Philippines
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
A. How effective does the security alarm is?
B. Is there any significant difference between a house with a security alarm and a
house without a security alarm?
C. How long does the security alarm can be used in a day?
D.Hypothesis
It was Hypothesized that:

A. Null: The security alarm does not effect on the safety of the house
Alternative: The alarm is 100% effective as a security alarm
B. Null: There is no significant difference between a house with a security alarm
and a house without a security alarm
Alternative: There is a significant difference between a house with a security
alarm and a house without a security alarm
C. Null: The security alarm can be used only for at most 1 hour a day

E.Scope and limitation
This study is only limited only in Alfonso Integrated High School during the
school year 2021-2022. This study determines how to use an Ev3 Lego Mind storm as an
security alarm. The built-in sensor on the EV3 Lego mind storm will be used and can
detect motion up to 80 meters away which is an average size of a door (Glenda T., (2021).
The battery's life span is 9-10 hours, and it may be used again after 3-4 hours of charging.
The alarm will be tested in the 2 random houses that were picked randomly from research
participants, we will perform 10 tests on each house but only one house will receive the
treatment. The main source of the data will be the 10 tests, which is prepared by the
researchers. The alarm will only be used to prevent trespassers or burglars to keep our
family members and valuable things safe.
F. Significance of the Study
The study about the ev3 Lego Mind storm as an alarm will be used to solve certain
problems or specifically help the following:
Family- This research will benefit the family in protecting their important
possessions and in being more secure and safe.
Neighborhood- Burglars will be scared away by the security alert, making the
community safer.
Community- The rate of burglary in the Philippines is increasing every year. This

study will aid the community/country in reducing the rate of burglary.
Researchers- This research will help future researchers in becoming more aware of
burglary incidents and the importance of installing a home security system.
Furthermore, this research can serve as a future reference for them.
G. Definition of terms
Security Alarm - A security alarm is a system designed to detect intrusion, such as
unauthorized entry, into a building or other areas.
Ev3 Lego Mind storm - Lego Mind storms EV3 (evolution 3) is the third generation
robotics kit in Lego’s Mind storms line that is used to make and program robots.
Burglary - entry into a building illegally with intent to commit a crime, especially theft.
Robbery - the action of taking property unlawfully from a person or place by force or
threat of force.
Theft - the action or crime of stealing.
Ultrasonic - involving sound waves with a frequency above the upper limit of human
hearing.
Sensor - a device which detects or measures a physical property and records, indicates, or
otherwise responds to it.
