This document is an assignment submitted by several students to their lecturer on the topic of swelling of fibers. It defines swelling as the change in dimensions, such as diameter and length, of fibers when they absorb water. It describes four types of swelling: transverse diameter, transverse area, axial, and volume swelling. The importance of swelling is discussed, including how it improves dye and chemical absorption, dimensional stability of fabrics, and elastic properties. The relationship between swelling and relative humidity is also explained, with figures showing typical curves and hysteresis between swelling and humidity.

Subject Name: Textile Physics Sub Code: YE-209 Definition of Swelling of Fiber ---2018(L-2,T-2), 2016 (L-2,T-1), 2020 (L-2, T-1)
When a fiber absorbs water, they change in dimensions, that
means, swelling is occurred in transversely (widthwise) and axially (lengthwise). It may be expressed in terms of the increase in diameter, area, length or volume. Types of Swelling ---2016(L-2,T-1), 2019(L-2, T-1) 2018(L-2,T-2), 2020 (L-2,T-1)
The swelling of textile fiber may be expressed in terms of the increase
in diameter, area, length or volume.
There are four types---
1) Transverse diameter swelling 2) Transverse area swelling 3) Axial swelling 4) Volume swelling Importance of swelling ---2016(L-2, T-1) i. Improve the absorption of dyes and chemicals. ii. Increase the dimensional stability of the fabric. iii. Due to swelling, the pores of closely interlaced woven fabric will be completely blocked and they may produce water proof fabric. iv. Improve fastness of dyed materials. v. Elastic properties changed. vi. Swelling is also an important factor in creeping, due to the increased twist angle in a swollen yarn, and in drying and dyeing. ---2018 (L-2, T-2),2019 (L-2, T-1), 2020 (L-2, T-1) ---2016(L-2,T-1) Relation between swelling and relative humidity ---2016(L-2,T-1)
The variation of swelling with humidity usually follows the
change of regain, with hysteresis showing between swelling and humidity. Typical curves are shown in fig-2 - Fig-2 Fig-3 Figure-3 Length changes in merino wool fibers; (a) variation of length in absorption and desorption; (b) hysteresis between length change and regain. Mackay and Downes found that single wool fibers can show a maximum length between 75 and 85% r.h., as in Fig. 3(a). They also found hysteresis between length swelling and regain, as shown in Figure 3(b); Treloar found a similar result for horsehair. THANK YOU
