Surely you already have an initial idea of what social work is. Don’t you?
Doing a literal examination of the term, social work can be defined as a discipline
that applies into practice the principles, theories, ideas and methods of social
sciences to help improve how society works. From this definition we take further
examination of the society and how it works. Let us agree that this work must be for
the better, which means that society functions well. Structurally speaking, this
means that elements, units and institutions of society function well.

Canadian Association of Social Workers defines social work
as “a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups
and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being.
It aims to help people develop their skills and their ability to use their
resources and those of the community to resolve problems. Social work
is concerned with individual and personal problems but also with
broader social issues such as poverty, unemployment, and domestic
violence.”

Social workers, the practitioners of this applied social science, operate with
core values founded of social principles previously mentioned. Here in the
Philippines, the Professional Regulatory Board for Social Workers promulgates
code of ethics which partly states:
“We believe in the inherent dignity and worth of all men. We believe that every
man has natural and social rights, capacities and responsibilities to develop his full
potentials as a human being. We believe that the government and the people have a
joint responsibility to promote social justice and to ensure the economic and social
well-being of all people. We believe in free men freely living in a free society where
poverty is neither a fate nor a punishment but is a condition that can and must be
changed. We are committed to the development of the highly fulfilled human beings
in an atmosphere or social equity and economic prosperity. We are committed to seek
a higher quality of life for all people.”
Republic Act No. 4373 defines ”social worker” as a practitioner who by
accepted academic training and social work professional experience possesses the
skill to achieve the objectives as defined and set by the social work profession,
through the use of the basic methods and techniques of social work (case work,
group work, and community organization) which are designed to enable
individuals, groups and communities to meet their needs and to solve the problems
of adjustment to a hanging pattern of society and, through coordinated action, to
improve economic and social conditions, and is connected with an organized social
work agency which is supported partially or wholly from government or community
solicited funds.
In the practice of his or her profession, a social worker in the Philippines
must adhere to principles of conduct as stipulated in the Code of Ethics partly
written below:
“The social worker shall endeavor to contribute his utmost to nation building.
The social worker shall give paramount importance to the well-being of those whom
he helps. The social worker shall accept with respect and understanding his clients,
colleagues and all those who come within his sphere of professional activity. The
social worker shall engage in social action which according to his convictions will
further the best interests of the people and country. The social worker shall create
and or avail of opportunities for continuing profession growth. The social worker shall
at all times conduct himself in accordance with the standards of the social work
profession.”
An examination of the above text can give us a better understanding of the
goals of social work and how social workers do it.
Republic Act No. 4373 sets the scope of social work practices from macro
level social work, which covers larger scale social concerns with the goals of nation
building and to improve economic and social conditions to micro level social work
which cover smaller scale with the goals of enabling individuals, groups and
communities to meet their needs and to solve the problems of adjustment to a
hanging pattern of society.

Further study of the text above reveals the work areas in which social
workers work. These include individuals, families, groups, institutions and
communities.
To cater the needs of their clients, social workers use of the basic methods
and techniques: case work, group work, or community work. Through these
methods they are able to conduct thorough investigation, analysis, monitoring and
evaluation for providing solutions to the problems of individuals, groups or
communities.
