LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL PURPOSES

I. Introduction:

Most writings, even news, uses persuasion for the audiences to get
involve effectively. Convincing them through powerful statements will create
realistic response. When you are writing persuasion that follows expected
pattern of writing is considered as Academic text.
Start with introducing your topic, stating directly your point of view on
the chosen topic, usually on one sentence, and this is your THESIS
STATEMENT. It provides the summary of the argument.
“The overlaying of sand with crushed dolomite boulders along a portion
of Manila Bay will not help solve the environmental problems and issues
hounding the area, according to the University of the Philippines’ Marine
Science Institute.” https://www.cnn.ph/news/2020/10/1/UP-Marine-Science-Institute-Manila-

II. Learning Competency:

Learning Content: Thesis Statement of an Academic Text
(MELC: EN11/12A-EAPP-Ia-c-4)

1
III. Objectives:

At the end of this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
1. define thesis statement;
2. Identify the various techniques in locating statement; and
3. formulate thesis statement of the text.
IV. Discussion:
What is a thesis statement?
Thesis Statement is a short statement, usually one sentence, that
summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is
developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and
evidence. ("Dictionary.Com" 2020)
A thesis statement

- clearly identifies the topic being discussed, includes the points

discussed in this learning activity sheet, and is written for a specific
audience.
- tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject
matter under discussion.
- is a road map for the paper; in other words, it tells the reader what
to expect from the rest of the paper.
- directly answers the question asked of you. A thesis is an
interpretation of a question or subject, not the subject itself. The
subject, or topic, of an essay might be World War II or Moby Dick;
a thesis must then offer a way to understand the war or the novel.
- makes a claim that others might dispute.
- is usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper (most
often, at the end of the first paragraph) that presents your argument
to the reader. The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers
and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of
your interpretation.

2
Your thesis statement belongs at the end of your first paragraph, also
known as your introduction. Use it to generate interest in your topic and
encourage your audience to continue reading.

 Narrows the topic down to a specific focus of an investigation.

 Establishes a direction for the entire paper.
 Points forward to the conclusion.
 Always stated in your introduction. (Usually at the end of the first
paragraph).
 Always take a stand and justify further discussion.

Take a look at the following examples as your reference:

Statement of fact: Arguable thesis statement:

1. Small cars get better The government should ban 4x4 pickup
fuel mileage than 4x4 trucks except for work-related use.
pickup trucks.

2. Foul language is The amount of foul language in movies is

common in movies. disproportionate to the amount of foul language
in real life.
3. Celiac disease is an Researchers think the incidence of celiac
autoimmune disease. disease is increasing in the USA not only
because of an increase in the ability and
awareness to diagnose it, but also because of
changes in the agricultural system. In
particular, they are looking at the increased use
of pesticides, insecticides, and genetically
modified wheat as culprits. Some of these
theories are more likely to be valid than others.

3
Locating Explicit and Implicit Thesis Statements:
In academic writing, the thesis is often explicit: it is included as a
sentence as part of the text. It might be near the beginning of the work, but
not always–some types of academic writing leave the thesis until the
conclusion.
Journalism and reporting also rely on explicit thesis statements that
appear very early in the piece–the first paragraph or even the first sentence.
Works of literature, on the other hand, usually do not contain a
specific sentence that sums up the core concept of the writing. However,
readers should finish the piece with a good understanding of what the work
was trying to convey. This is what’s called an implicit thesis statement: the
primary point of the reading is conveyed indirectly, in multiple locations
throughout the work. (In literature, this is also referred to as the theme of
the work.)
Tips on how to formulate thesis statement:
STEPS TO WRITING A THESIS STATEMENT
THESIS WRITING STEPS EXAMPLE ESSAY TOPIC: ADOPTATION
1. Choose a specific topic. Advantages and disadvantages of adoption
2. Select a related Do the advantages of adoption outweigh the
question disadvantages?
3. Answer the question Advantages: Way to expand family, way to
overcome reproductive challenges, brings
together adults who want to become parents
and children.
Disadvantages: can be difficult, can be costly,
expensive, can take a long time.
4. Formulate the thesis Adoption allows people to expand their
statement. families, even the face of reproduction
changes. While the priceless advantage of
creating families by bringing together parents
and children.

4
Implicit vs. Explicit: What is the Difference?
There are many words in English that despite having very similar
sounds have completely different meanings. This can lead to confusion and
usage problems for native and non-native speakers alike, and words implicit
vs. explicit are no exception to this.
These two words have almost opposite meanings but are regularly
confused because of their similar sound. Since they do have such different
meanings, you want to be sure you are using the right one. In this posts, I
want to go over the definitions of these words, explain their differences, and
have you take a quiz on their meanings.
After reading this post, you would not ever again ask yourself the
question, “Is it explicit or implicit?”
1. When to use Implicit
“Implicit is indirect, but explicit is direct.”
The definition of implicit is, “implied or understood though not plainly
or directly expressed.” Something is, therefore, implicit when it is not directly
stated but is either suggested in the wording or necessary to effectuate the
purpose. For example:
 There is a morality implicit in his writings.
 She implicitly said she likes white shoes by saying she likes all
colors but tan.
In the first example, the writer may not have clearly or directly laid out
a moral vision, but it is understood through the characters, their actions,
and their experiences.
In the second example, the woman states that she likes all shoe colors
but tan. While she doesn’t directly say she likes white shoes, she implicitly
does because white is not tan.
2. When to Use Explicit
The definition of explicit is, “to fully and clearly express something,
leaving nothing implied.” Something is explicit when it is cleared stated and
spelled out and there is no room for confusion, as in the writing of a contract
or statute. For example:
 The law was explicit in whose tax rates were be raised.

5
 He said explicitly, you will not attend that concert
Explicit means stated directly. In other words, something explicit is very clear
and exact about the meaning.
 I don’t have a feeling that he will fire a lot of employees. I know
it for certain.
 I know because he explicitly said that he would during the last
meeting.
(explicitly is the adverb form of the word)

Tips on how to formulate specific thesis statement:

Basics of Conjunctions
Conjunctions are parts of speech that connect words, phrase, clauses,
or sentences. There are three kinds of conjunctions: coordinating, paired,
and subordinating.
Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions connect words or phrases that serve the
same grammatical purpose in a sentence. There are seven main coordinating
conjunctions in English, which form the acronym FANBOYS:
F: for: The teachers were frustrated, for the school had cut funding for all
enrichmentprograms.*
A: and: In this course, I will write a literature review, a case study, and a
final paper**
N: nor: The students did not complete their homework, nor did they pass
the test.
B: but: The study is several years old but still valuable to this study.
O: or: At the end of the class, the students can choose to write an
essay or take a test.
Y: yet: The patient complained of chronic pain, yet she refused treatment.
S: so: I have only been a nurse for one year, so I have little experience with
paper charting.
* "For" is rarely used as a conjunction in modern English.
** When the conjunctions "and" and "or" connect three or more words or
phrases, use a serial comma to separate items in the series.

6
Transitional words such as "however" and "therefore" can also
function as conjunctions:
 The authors agreed on the prevalence of the problem; however, they
disagreed on the problem’s cause.
 Several employees complained about the new policies, and therefore,
the manager held an all-staff meeting to address their concerns.

Paired Conjunctions:
Paired conjunctions consist of two words or phrases that help make a
point or establish alternatives.
 both…and
 Both the students and the teachers were satisfied with the pilot
program.
Note: When two subjects are connected by “both…and,” use a plural verb
(such as “are” or were”).
 Not only…but also
 Not only did the student include full sentences from the source
without using quotation marks, but he also failed to properly.
 either…or
 Participants in the survey could either choose from a list of
possible answer or write in their own responses.
 neither…nor
 Students who did not complete the project received neither
praise nor rewards.
"That" has a few different functions in English. This can lead to
confusion because some instances of "that" are more optional than others in
academic writing.
One important use of “that” is for embedding (inserting) a certain type
of dependent clause called a noun clause into an independent clause.
Frequently, such “that” clauses serve as the direct object of a reporting verb
(such as found, reported, posited, argued, claimed, maintained, and
hypothesized) to introduce a paraphrase, summary, or quotation.

7
Key: Yellow, bold = subject; green, underline = verb; blue, italics = object
For example:
 Smith (2015) reported that more research was necessary.
 Smith (2015) = subject
 reported = verb
 that more research was necessary = dependent clause, direct
object of the verb "reported"
 The authors hypothesized that there would be significant results.
o The authors = subject
o hypothesized = verb
o that there would be significant results = dependent clause, direct
object of the verb "hypothesized"

 Jones (2014) asserted that confidentiality was maintained throughout

the study.
 Jones (2014) = subject
 asserted = verb
 that confidentiality was maintained throughout the study =
dependent clause, direct object of the verb "asserted"
Rephrasing these sentences into questions and answers is one way to
see that the “that” clauses are acting as direct objects.
 What did Smith (2015) report?
 Answer: that more research was necessary
 What did the authors hypothesize?
 Answer: that there would be significant results
 What did Jones (2014) assert?
 Answer: that confidentiality was maintained throughout the
study
The persona (voice) for formal writing:
In academic and professional writing aim to sound fair, objective, and
relatively serious. Generally, make your style straightforward and to the
point. Try to AVOID USING PERSONAL pronouns such as:
 I, me, my, our, we, you, your

8
Throughout your paper. Also, AVOID SLAND AND CONTRACTIONS (aren’t
= are not). However, avoid a voice that you sound “pompous” or too flowery.
Write in a voice that is genuine for you.

1. (E). The performance of the individual has to be tested over a span of time
as the statement mentions. So, it is implicit. The statement mentions that
the individual's worth shall be reviewed (during probation period) before
confirmation. So, it is also implicit.
2. (A). Since the statement talks of putting the child in school at the age of

So, it is implicit. But nothing about admission after 6 years of age is
mentioned in the statement. So, it is not implicit.
3. (B). Assumption I goes against the statement. So, it is not implicit. The
