Formative task

UNIT 5: Spacious interiors

Task 1
In this task you will explore the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity.

This task focuses on criteria:

C (Communication) and D (Applying mathematics in real-life contexts).

Using space and representation you will try to determine whether the Lac Léman in
Switzerland would be emptied if every person in the world drank from it for 1 week.

Question 1
The population of the world is 7.7 billion and the World Health Organisation (WHO)
recommends that each person drinks 2.5 liters of water a day.

Based on this information, calculate, in liters, the quantity of water required if everyone in the
world drank 2.5 liters per day for one week (7 days).

Question 2
The depths of the water in the lake follow a shelf system. The lake is divided into regions
that contain one or more sections, where each section is a “shelf” (i.e. an area of the lake
that has the same depth). The first region is the deepest section, the second region contains
the 2 deepest sections, the third region contains the 3 deepest sections, etc.

(a) The deepest part of the lake has an area of 57.93 km2 and a depth of 350 m.
Calculate the volume of water in this region in km3, assuming the shape is a prism.

(b) The second region of the lake has a total area of 105.44 km2.

(i) Show that the new section in this region has an area of 47.51 km2

(ii) Given that the new section has a depth of 300 m, calculate the total volume of
water in this region (including the 2 deepest sections) in km3.

(5 marks)

The third region has a total area of 190.24 km2 and the new section in this region has a
depth of 250 m.

The fourth region of the lake has a total area of 372.66 km2 and the new section in this
region has a depth of 125 m.

The final region of the lake has a total area of 579.07 km2 and the new section has an average
depth of 50 m.

Question 3
Volume is the space the lake and water take up, whereas capacity is the amount of water.

1 m3 = 1000 liters

(a) Calculate the number of liters in 1 km3 of water.

(b) Hence calculate the amount of water (in liters) in the Lake.
(c) Determine whether there is enough water in Lac Léman for every person in the world
to drink, for one week, the amount of water recommended by the WHO.

(d) Calculate for how long the entire world population could drink from the Lac Léman
(assuming everyone in the world drank the recommended 2.5L of water per day).

Task 2
This task focuses on criteria
A (Knowing and understanding) and C (Communication).

The aim of this task is to find the dimensions of a cuboid with a fixed volume that has the
smallest possible surface area.

The cuboid box has a square base and a volume of 11 025 cm3.

Question 1
Assume the box has a height of 25 cm. Each side of the base is x cm.

(a) Find the value of x.

(b) Calculate the surface area of the box with height 25 cm.
(5 marks)

Question 2

Now the box has an unknown height h and a square base with side length x. It has been
designed to use the least amount of material to create (i.e. it has the smallest surface area).

(a) Write down an expression for the volume and surface area of the box in terms of h
and x.

(b) Write down an expression for the height (h) in terms of x. Reminder: the volume of
the box is 11025cm3.

(c) Hence, write down an expression for the surface area of the box in terms of x only.

(d) Use graphing software to draw the graph of the surface area of the box in terms of x,
the side length of the square base. Find the minimum surface area and the
corresponding value of x.

Task 3
The triangle ABC is mapped onto triangle A´B´C´ by a rotation
followed by a translation.
For example:
 −1
Rotation 90° anticlockwise about (0, 0), followed by translation  
3
OR
 −3 
Rotation 90° anticlockwise about (1, 1), followed by translation  
3

In this task you will determine whether there is a connection between

the center of the rotation and the vector of the translation.

Question 1
Take the following points as the centers of the rotation:
(0, 0), (1, 1), (2, 2), (3, 3) Centre Translation
(a) Write down the centers of rotation and corresponding
translations in a table.  −1
(0, 0)  
3
(b) Use your results in part (a) to predict the translation if the center
of the rotation is (10, 10).  −3 
(1, 1)  
3
(c) Write down any connection you notice between these centers of
rotation and their corresponding translation.

Question 2
Now take a different set of points as the centers of the rotation: (0, 0), (1, 0), (2, 0), (3, 0)
(a) Write down the new centers of rotation and corresponding translations in a second
table.

(b) Use your results in part (a) to predict the translation if the center of the rotation is (10, 0).

(c) Write down any connection you notice between these centers of rotation and their
corresponding translation.

Question 3
(a) Using your own set of points as centers of rotation, repeat steps a-c in the previous
questions for your set of points.

(b) Determine a general rule which predicts the translation for any
center of rotation to obtain triangle A´B´C´ from triangle ABC.
