What is Railway Engineering?

Railway Engineering is a specialist field in Transportation and Civil Engineering.

(*)

Railways are:
 incredibly complex
 expensive systems
 exclusively designed for the efficient passage of trains to transport people, freight and equipment.

Design, construction, maintenance and operation of trains and rail systems

* …from Operational aspects!

Public Transportation System
Rail – the backbone of transportation!
 City Area development needs Rail to grow!
 Regional, Metropolitan, City center
 All transport modes need cooperation with each other!

Hazard Identification

All reasonably foreseeable hazards that may arise within the scope of the system definition shall be identified by hazard analysis.
The process covers both Civil works and System Contractors work.
Log Field Hazard Log Contents
Number A unique reference number.
Mode of operation in which the hazard is expected to
occur: Normal, Degraded, Emergency, Maintenance
zard Identified The date the Hazard Log entry was created.
Hazard
The current statusCategory
of the hazard: new, open, closed. Procedure
Status Change The last date that the hazard status was revised.
Category The type category of the hazard: Go thru all Hazards – Line By Line! Determine:
 Derailment hazards
• Applicable to AMI APM System
 Collision hazards
• Discipline, MEP, ARC…
 Fire hazards
• Risk assessment
 Explosion hazards
• Mitigation to design out Hazard
 Impact hazards
• Residual risk determination
 Entrapment hazards
 Electrical hazards
• Owner
 Trip/fall hazards
• Control measure (later)
 Other hazards.

The system or sub-system to which the hazard relates.

y The component to which the safety function applies
Hazard Description of the causes of the hazard being realized.
Description Description of the hazard and its cause which, if realized, has the
potential to cause an accident.
Railway Sub-system
Hazard: A physical situation with a potential for human injury

 Hazard Workshops Approval: O&S Contractor
