a. Alice works in a sleep laboratory. She is looking at how much people move in different stages
of sleep. Outline one way that Alice could tell whether her participants are dreaming.
(2 marks)

b. Alice is measuring movement by counting the number of times the participant rolls over in
bed. Explain one problem with the way Alice is measuring movement. (2 marks)

2. In the study by Milgram (obedience), the results he recorded were the final voltage each
participant gave to the learner. State the range of these results. (1 mark)

3. Lakha is planning to conduct a study to correlate helpfulness and intelligence. She is going to ask
her participants to use an online IQ test and is going to measure helpfulness in the laboratory.

a. Suggest one way that Lakha could measure helpfulness for her correlation. (2 marks)

b. Suggest one advantage of the measure of helpfulness that you gave in part (a). (2 marks)

c. Name the type of graph Lakha should use to plot her results. (1 mark)

d. Describe the pattern Lakha will see in her results if she finds a negative correlation between
the two variables. You may use a drawing in your answer. (1 mark)

e. A problem with the participants doing an online IQ test at home is that they may cheat.
Explain the effect this would have on the negative correlation if only the less helpful
participants cheated. (2 marks)

4. Two students, Hilja and Sakri, are investigating the exercise that people take. They are using a
questionnaire with 10 questions. Both students are worried about reliability in their
investigation.

a. Suggest how Hilja can test whether all the closed questions on the questionnaire are
consistent. (3 marks)

b. Sakri thinks that the way he scores the participants’ answers may differ from the way Hilja
scores them. Suggest how Sakri can test whether he and Hilja are reliable in their scoring of
the questionnaire. (3 marks)

a. Cathy has a younger sister who is scared of shoelaces. Cathy has decided to watch her sister
in the school playground. She wants to observe how her sister responds to other people. She
decides to conduct a controlled observation using two of her friends, one wearing shoes
with laces and one wearing shoes without laces. She has asked her friends to walk around
the playground separately. Describe how Cathy could conduct her observation of her sister’s
responses. (10 marks)

b. Identify one possible weakness/limitation with the procedure you have described in your
answer to part (a) and suggest how your study might be done differently to overcome the
problem. (4 marks)

6. Emma is planning to conduct an interview-based study about how well people think their
pets/domesticated animals learn, for example whether cats learn to respond to their names.

Describe how Emma could conduct her interview-based study to discover what people think
about how well their pets/domesticated animals learn. (10 marks)

7. Mia believes the Piliavin et al. study supports the individual side of the debate but Brett believes
it supports the situational side of the debate.

Outline why you think either Brett or Mia is correct, using evidence from the study. (4 marks)

8. In the study by Canli et al. (brain scans and emotions), one variable was investigated by
comparing neutral and negative scenes.

a. Is this an independent or a dependent variable? Include a reason for your answer. (1 mark)

b. Outline how Canli et al. operationalised this variable. (1 mark)

9. The study by Saavedra and Silverman investigated a boy with a phobia of buttons. Identify the
research method used in this study. (1 mark)
