Birgitta’s bookmark
©TorunJohansson

This bookmark was inspired by a bit of lace on a bedsheet

that my grandmother made in the 1930’s. It’s an easy
pattern that works up quickly and makes a great last-
minute gift for any booklover. I designed it for my mother
Birgitta many years ago. She was an avid reader and there
were always piles of books all around our home. My
mother would often read several books at a time. Each
book needed a bookmark of course and it was my job to
provide them.

Materials:
• Yarn: Scheepjes Maxi Sweet Treat or any lace weight yarn.
• Hook: 1,50 mm (or smaller if you tend to crochet loosely)

US standard crochet terms

st = stitch hdc = half dc
ch = ch dc = double crochet
chsp = chain space shell = five double crochet in same stitch
slst = slip stitch sk = skip
sc = single crochet

Instructions

To begin: Chain 11 + 5.

5 dc in next sc (second shell made), sk 2ch and sc into 3rd ch. Turn.

Border (optional): When you’ve reached the desired length,

you can make a border by working sc all around the
bookmark. This will make the bookmark sturdier and give it a
more finished look.
Along the top: Ch1 and sc in same st. 3sc in chsp, sk st and
4sc in next chsp, sk next st and in following chsp work [3sc,
ch1, 3sc] (= corner). Now continue down the side.
Side: Skip all stitches and work only in the chain spaces: 3sc
in each chsp until you reach the bottom corner.
Bottom: continue in same chsp (corner) and work [ch1, 3sc]. Sk st, 4 sc, sk st and in
following chsp work [3 sc, ch1, 3sc].
Side: Continue up the side as you did the first side. When you reach the top, sl st (or
work an invisible join) in first sc of border. Fasten off.
Final touches
• Add a fringe if desired.
• Block the bookmark.
