Public Policy Update

The Public Policy Committee has been hard at work recently planning some exciting things. We will be sending out information about conducting a Virtual Strike, which will happen during the Week of the Young Child, so keep your eyes open! We will send sticker ideas and fact sheets so that families, employers, and the community can become aware of the issues that early childhood educators face. If you would like more information about the Public Policy Committee, please contact the cochairs: Ashley Zurawski (azurawski@ywcayork.org) or Becky Sullivan (rsullivan@ywcayork.org). You can also stop by the Public Policy table at the Week of the Young Child Banquet. Advocacy Suggestions: Have the children and/or families make Valentines to send to local legislators. Have children, families, and teachers send a Valentine to Governor Corbett. Invite your local legislator to tour/visit your center. Updated Vaccine Schedules

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released the annual updates of recommended immunization schedules for children and adolescents in the United States for 2011 on February 1, 2011. Children have three immunization schedules: 0 to 6 years of age, 7 to 18 years of age, and a catch-up immunization schedule for those who start late or fall behind. Remember to check the adult vaccine schedules too. They apply to staff and adult family members. The CDC recommends that all adults who work with children receive Tdap vaccine once, regardless of when they last received a tetanus booster. Tdap is the tetanus, diphtheria, and attenuated pertussis vaccine. Pertussis is the germ that causes whooping cough in children and bronchitis in adults. Infants can die from whooping cough they get from those who have not been immunized. Adults of all ages should have a single dose of Tdap. Those who have or anticipate having close contact with infants and toddlers must get the shot to protect these children who are too young to get all their DTP shots. For the same reason, pregnant women who have not previously had Tdap should get the vaccine within hours after they deliver to avoid exposing their infants to whooping cough. For more information, visit the CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/recs/schedules/childschedule.htm Page 3
