Term Structure of Interest Rates
Term Structure of Interest Rates
Yield Curve ( đường cong lợi suất): a plot of the yield on bonds with
differing terms to maturity but the same risk, liquidity and tax
considerations
- Up-ward-sloping: the most usual case the long term interest rates are
above the short- term interest rates
- Flat: short and long-term interest rates are the same
- Inverted: long-term rates are below short-term interest rates

a) Expectations Theory( lý thuyết kỳ vọng)
Định nghĩa:
The interest rate on a long-term bond will equal an average of the short-
term interest rates that people expect to occur over the life of the long-
term bond.
-if bonds with different maturities are perfect substitutes, then the
expected returns on those bonds must be equal.
-the expectations theory predicts that interest rates on bonds of different
maturities different because short
term interest rates are expected to have different values at future dates.
- The expectations theory is an elegant theory that explains why the term
structure of interest rates (as represented by yield curves) changes at
different times
- it has a major shortcom-ing: It cannot explain that yield curves usually
slope upward.
- The key assumption of the segmented markets theory is that bonds of
different maturities are not substitutes at all
- This theory of the term structure is the opposite extreme of the
expectations theory, which assumes that bonds of different maturities are
perfect substitutes.
- The argument for why bonds of different maturities are not substitutes is
that investors have very strong preferences for bonds of one maturity as
opposed to another
-In the segmented markets theory, differing yield curve patterns are
accounted for by supply and demand differences associated with bonds of
different maturities.
- The segmented markets theory cannot explain why interest rates on
bonds of different maturities tend to move together
- Because each of our two theories explains empirical facts that the other
cannot, a logical step is to combine the theories, which leads us to the
liquidity premium theory.
