A Message to Parents Using MY FIRST DICTIONARY
As your children grow, they continually increase the number of words in
their vocabulary. Most of the first words they use come from mom and dad.
As parents we all are so proud when our sons or daughters use words beyond
the very simple early childhood words. The meaning of words to a child
isfound in the context of conversation and in the life experiences of every-
day living. Until you told your child that a ball is round, bounces and rolls
they would have had no idea what the word meant. Until you showed your
child a ball, they would have no idea what a ball looks like.
This dictionary is not just a collection of words, but rather a tool for your
children to expand their knowledge of our language. We have created a list
of 1,500 words and definitions from our New Webster Dictionary Of The
English Language appropriate for the young reader with many color illustra-
tions to give visual clues for identification. An important feature is that
the words are used in a sentence and then often in a second or third sentence
but with a different explanation if the word is particularly difficult to
understand.
The key person who will make this tool valuable to your child is YOU. Un-
til you pronounce out loud the words in this book, your child's true
first
understanding cannot begin. You are the first teacher and home is the first
school. At first your child will look through the book and identify objects
from the color pictures. This first use is an experiment with the definition
which, if correct, you can confirm with praise. If not, read the sentence in
the definition and discuss the correct meaning. Experimentation which in-
cludes right and wrong answers is the road to learning. Remember, more
learning occurs with wrong answers that are then explained correctly. The
richness of our language is found in it's use so, for example, take the oppor-
tunity of discussing a word like "farm" to also discuss "farmer", which only
needs (er) added to make a new word.
Dictionary games of all kinds are possible. Pick a word in the book and ask
if your child previously heard the word. If it was heard, then ask what does
it mean. New words are fun to explore and discuss so always make the learn-
ing process fun. Your questions will quickly lead your child to want to dis-
cover many new meanings. We have included 100 difficult words (difficult
in spelling or meaning). These are marked by an asterisk (*). Spend some
extra time with your child on these words. Children are fascinated by dif-
ficult words and learning their meanings is a satisfying accomplishment.
