CHAPTER 6

OUTPUT OF THE STUDY

PLASTIC BASED-PAVEMENT BRICKS

This chapter presents the information about the plastic-based pavement

bricks that serves as the output of the study.

Rationale

Building bricks are mostly popular in the field of production. Pavement

bricks are the type that is manufactured to be laid in flat ground. They are

designed to last under the hot and cold temperature.

Plastic waste management of the school had initiated a program “Basura

Mo I-deposit Mo Project” where, plastics around the school premises were being

collected by the assigned officers from students before going home. The Plastics

collected were then utilized for making the plastic-based pavement bricks. Plastic

Based Pavement Bricks were made from plastic garbage which is Low Density

Polyethylene (LDPE) mixed with sand in a ratio of 3:1 (3kg plastics: 1kg sand).

The product was made up of resourceful materials that were gathered easily.

This plastic-based pavement bricks will be installed in the school ground

of Ocaña National High School. The product is design for school beautification

and pathway purposes. It will add more appeal in the school surroundings and

this will be beneficial to both students and teachers for it will assist them during

rainy season. The overall purpose of this plastic based pavement bricks will

address the clogging problem and to lessen then waste problem of the school.

PLASTIC BASED PAVEMENT BRICKS PRODUCTION

This section covers the mass production of Plastic-Based Pavement Bricks.

The materials used, tools and equipments in production of the bricks were

provided in this content. Methods were explained and be shown through pictures

in conducting the procedures of making the product.

This section also highlights the proper right process of making the Plastic-

Based Pavement Bricks to produce a good outcome for the bricks’ quality.

EQUIPMENTS:

• 8 - customized brick molder • 2 - paint brush #2

(plywood, nail, straw)
• 1 mechanical weighing scale
• 4x8 plywood
• 1 ayagan
• 1- trowel
• 1 m sand paper
• 2 - taro
• 20 - garbage sacks (sack rice)
• firewood
• 8 pairs of scissors
• 3 – match

• 2 - alternative furnace

MATERIALS:

• 1kg negros sand (fine)

• 3kg LDPE waste plastic

• Water

• white paint (Triton 500)

• sky blue paint (Prima 500)

• PROCEDURE:

• Step 1. Prepare the collected plastic waste

• Step 2. Segregate the plastic waste to transparent or light from

plastic with foil

• Plastics with foil Transparent or Light
Plastic
• Figure 9. Segregation of Plastic Waste

• Step 3. Contain the transparent or light plastics into a garbage sack
and set aside.
• Step 4. Cut the plastics with foil into tiny pieces. When done, put it

on a garbage sack and set aside.

Figure 10. Cutting of Plastics with Foil

This 4th procedure requires the cutting of plastics with foil for the melting

procedures. Unlike the transparent or light plastics, these plastic with foil were too

dense and takes time to melt. Also, uncut plastics with foil do not melt well during

the process due to its components that it possessed.

Step 5. Get the weighing scale. Weigh for 1kg transparent or light plastic

and 2kg for the plastics with foil. Set aside.

11. Weighing of Plastic Waste into Different Measurements

This 5th procedure requires the segregation between transparent or light and

with foil plastics for the melting procedure purposes. Plastics with foil have the

quality that contributes for strength in bricks. Thus, the portion of plastics with foil is

more than the portion of transparent or light plastics in the three (3) kilogram

measurement. Transparent or light plastics alone do not give a good outcome of the

plastic based pavement bricks’ quality. Hence, it must be combined with plastic with

foil.

Step 6. Prepare the work area and equipments for the melting procedures.
Step 7. Utilize the firewood and fire up the alternative furnace. Place the

taro and wait until heated up.

Step 8. When the taro is heated up already, put the 3kg plastic

(combination of the t/l and with foil plastic) on the taro.

Step 9. Cover the basin with plywood or sin about to 2- 3 minutes. After,

open the basin and mix the plastics inside.

Step 10. Repeat 9th step for the next 6 minutes until the plastics are

completely melt.

Step 11. While waiting for the plastic to melt, get the ayagan and refine

the sand manually until it is done.

Step 12. Get the weighing scale and weigh for 1 kg of sand (fined). Set

aside after then.

Step 13. When the plastics are completely melt, put the 1kg of sand on the

taro and mix it well with the plastic.

Step 14. Observe the mixture. If the mixture is already wet and sticky

then it is done and ready to be molded.

Step 15. Prepare the brick molder. Put a little amount of water on the

brick molder surface, enough to make it wet.

Step 16. Fill the brick molder with the mixture by using the trowel. Set

aside for ½ to 2 hrs.

In the 16th procedure, the brick molder has to be supported with the straw. The

straw will be fastened around the exterior walls of the brick molder. This will help

the walls to tighten up, avoiding the mixture to flow. Also, it will avoid deformation

of the plastic pavement bricks.

Step 17. Remove the molded plastic pavement bricks from the brick

molder.

Product from the Brick Molder

Step 18. Make the surface of the plastic pavement bricks fine using sand

paper.

Step 19. Apply paint using the brush and set it aside to make it dry.

Step 20. The plastic pavement bricks are done and ready for installation.
