Working as a Student

When students live away from home it can be very expensive for their parents to
support them. Paying for accommodation, books, food, and bills costs a great deal
of money. Because of this, many university students find a part-time job while
they are studying. It doesn’t really matter what the job is, as long as it fits in with
their program and earns them some extra cash. It not only helps with their
expenses but also teaches them how to manage their money and become more
responsible. Trying to fit all of this into their daily lives can be difficult in the
beginning. It takes careful planning and organization to bring it all together.
However, it is an important lesson to prepare them for life as independent adults.

Q: According to the paragraph, why is finding a job difficult for a

By the time it closed, many millions had come through, especially in the
terrible times between the two World Wars. Some went on to become
rich and famous, including make-up expert Max Factor, actor Carey
Grant, singer Al Jolson and gangster Lucky Luciano. But perhaps our
final thoughts should go out to that unlucky 2% that were not allowed
into America. This was sometimes because they were criminals, but
more usually it was because doctors decided they had a physical or
mental illness. These tired travelers were put back on the ship they came
on, and began the long return journey to where they had come from.

Ellis Island

Between the years of 1892 and 1964, Ellis Island was the first piece of America
that most immigrants from Europe – and elsewhere – stepped upon. That was
because between those two dates it was the site of America’s busiest immigrant
inspection center, and the place where these millions of hopeful people began
their new lives.

Q: What did they do on Ellis Island?

registered new arrivals in America

Reading

The island lies in New York Harbor just north of Liberty Island, and from its
dock the international crowd of people could see the Statue of Liberty. It had
been placed there in 1886, just before the construction of the huge three-story
building on Ellis Island began in 1890. You can easily imagine the effect that
the sight of this symbol of freedom had on the new arrivals. Many had come
there to escape something and to find some kind of freedom: freedom from
fear, from hunger or from worry. Across the harbor from where they stood was
a woman with a torch that promised just that.

Working as a Student

When students live away from home it can be very expensive for their parents to support
them. Paying for accommodation, books, food, and bills costs a great deal of money.
Because of this, many university students find a part-time job while they are studying. It
doesn’t really matter what the job is, as long as it fits in with their program and earns
them some extra cash. It not only helps with their expenses but also teaches them how to
manage their money and become more responsible. Trying to fit all of this into their daily

Ellis Island

The island lies in New York Harbor just north of Liberty Island, and
from its dock the international crowd of people could see the Statue of
Liberty. It had been placed there in 1886, just before the construction of
the huge three-story building on Ellis Island began in 1890. You can
easily imagine the effect that the sight of this symbol of freedom had on
the new arrivals. Many had come there to escape something and to find
some kind of freedom: freedom from fear, from hunger or from worry.
Across the harbor from where they stood was a woman with a torch that
promised just that.
