THE ARMED CITIZEN®

O
n the afternoon of Jan. 11, 2022, the Chickasha, Okla., police were called
to the scene of a car crash that ended with a death. This bizarre situation
started when a man drove his car through a nearby KFC restaurant,
damaging the building, and continued through several front lawns before backing
into a home, then getting out and banging on its windows. When a neighbor went
out to his porch to investigate the commotion, the suspect charged the man and
assaulted his wife as he entered their home. The homeowner shot the crazed home
invader, who died at the scene. (tulsaworld.com, Tulsa, Okla., 1/11/22)

to carry afield, and also save on cost compared to other more expensive
options. Weighing in at just 7 lbs., the tripod features spring-loaded legs
that automatically adjust to terrain height with a simple squeeze of a

correct contemporary parts. The book progresses chronologically and features hundreds
of images, as well as two quick-reference sections for easy confirmation of major compo-

the country. How the pistol made it to the United States is anyone’s guess.
Perhaps more interesting is the array of letters and numbers stamped on the
grip’s frontstrap. For a period, usually given as 1910 to 1916, it was a requirement
that each pistol be given a regimental identification marking representative to the
company level. As the markings were applied at the unit level, the technique and
quality of this treatment varied. The decoding and translation of these markings
is subjective, although there are sources offering clues to interpret them. Based
on what data I have been able to find, it is possible that your Luger’s designation
is 57th Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion, Machine Gun Company, Pistol No. 6. The
long-barrel Lugers were typically issued to soldiers manning crew-served weaponry,
which would include heavy machine guns and artillery pieces. While no Lange

The three stamped crowns over the gothic letters on the right side are military

stylized spread-eagle found nearby, which is also located on the barrel and bolt.

Time is running out for timeless turquoise. Just because
turquoise is timeless, doesn’t mean supplies of it will last
forever. Turquoise is only found a few places on Earth. Typically
unearthed in arid climates like the American Southwest and
Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, turquoise requires a delicate balance of
minerals and water to achieve its gorgeous range of blues. But
even when conditions are optimal for turquoise to form, finding
stones of gem-worthy quality is a challenge. There are very few
turquoise mines left, and then, less than 5% of turquoise mined
worldwide is of jewelry condition, making it rarer to come by
than even diamonds.
There are turquoise and sterling silver pendants out there for

Mounted units were utilized heavily during the
American Revolution, although not in the numbers or
the grand, decisive, massed charges seen on the plains of
Europe. More often than not, light horsemen were used as
scouts on raiding parties, for foraging operations and as
messengers or escorts. The walled, fenced and wooded ter-

Equipping The Continental Cavalry

Arms of every sort were always wanting for the mounted
arm of the Continental Cavalry. In 1777, Congress autho-
rized four regular regiments of Light Dragoons, which rarely
fielded more than 150 mounted personnel each. All four
served throughout the entire war with detachments present
in most the major campaigns. The 3rd Regiment commanded

recruits carried them hanging from a belted leather strap on

the order of what Europeans would term dragoons.

A British officer aptly described the mounted Patriot
militia in the South, “ ... The crackers and militia in those

another occasion, when Marion’s horsemen were being pur-

30 SUPER CARRY
Is it possible to make a concealed-carry
cartridge that outperforms the .380 ACP,
approaches the 9 mm Luger and offers two
more rounds in the magazine?
BY JUSTIN DYAL, Field Editor
he last widely popular pistol cartridge intended
specifically for concealed carry was the .380 ACP,
designed more than 100 years ago by John Moses
Browning for the 1908 Colt pistol. I have often looked
with mild frustration at the .380 and the ubiquitous
9 mm Luger, our two most common “carry” pistol
cartridges. Why? Because now, more than a century
removed from their inception, there remain pressure or
performance limitations that it seems we should be able
to overcome with such carry-size handgun cartridges.
The engineers at Federal apparently agreed, and, seeing
an opportunity in the performance gap between these
two mainstays, they went to work. The 30 Super Carry is
the resulting cartridge, and, as the name suggests, it is
aimed squarely at the concealed-carry market.

Phil Schreier Named Director Of NRA Museums

O
ne of NRA’s most public and best-known figures in the gun world—and its leading
voice when it comes to firearms, history and our Second Amendment heritage—
E. Philip Schreier III has been appointed director of NRA Museums. “Phil,” to
his friends, has been an NRA National Firearms Museum staff curator for 33 years,
starting as a curatorial assistant in 1989 at the previous National Firearms Museum in
Washington, D.C., before being elevated to senior curator, a position he served in for
most of his decades-long career.
He has fulfilled many roles, including as manager of the NRA Gun Collecting
Department—a tenure that saw him attend literally thousands of gun shows across the
country and world—as well as senior curator of exhibits. It was in the latter post that
his vision for firearms, freedom and the American experience took shape in the form of
NRA’s National Firearms Museum that opened in 1997 at NRA’s relocated headquarters
in Fairfax, Va. Through its exhibit cases and the more than 2,000 firearms on display,

Schreier’s storytelling and ability to make the history of firearms relatable to everyday
Americans shines every day.
An Eagle Scout, Schreier worked in a host of jobs for nearly a decade at Goshen Scout
Camps ranging from rifle range instructor to shooting sports director and then program
director, earning NRA Certified Instructor credentials in multiple disciplines. He attended
the University of Maryland, then was briefly a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms
inspector before joining NRA as a staff curator.
Schreier has been a face of NRA on television and the Internet for decades. He was
one of the anchors of the popular History Channel program “Tales of the Gun” early in
his career, as well as more recent shows such as “Lock N’ Load” with his close friend and
NRA Director, the late R. Lee Ermey. He, along with former NRA Museums Director Jim
Supica, co-hosted “Gun Gurus” on the Outdoor Channel. He also has appeared on “Gun
Stories” with Joe Mantegna, and he has appeared in every episode of “American Rifleman
Television” since the show’s inception and first broadcast in 2003. NRA Publications
Editorial Director Mark Keefe told Schreier at the time,“ We won’t do this without you,
Phil,” and they have not. Schreier was also one of the main voices for NFMs “Curator’s
nramuseum.org Corner,” which can be viewed on YouTube.
Schreier has also written hundreds of articles for American Rifleman, American Hunter,
America’s 1st Freedom, Shooting Illustrated (for which he is the Classics editor), Man At
Arms, Wild West, Guns & Ammo, Surplus Firearms, Military History Illustrated and a host
of others.
An avid gun collector, he is a member of the American Society of Arms Collectors and
the Company of Military Historians, plus too many other gun-collecting organizations to
list here.
Executive Director of General Operations Joseph P. DeBergalis Jr. said, “There is no
one who loves and shares his passion for firearms better than Phil Schreier.” He added,
“Phil will ensure the unique American heritage of the Second Amendment will continue
to be told every day at the National Firearms Museum, the National Sporting Arms
Museum and the Frank Brownell Museum of the Southwest.” For more information go to
