During the week, the students should be able to:
introduce themselves in the class;
discuss expectations, classroom rules, requirements and content of the subject;
recall MYP command terms, ATL skills and key concepts;
review the Sciences assessment criteria;
be familiar with the global context by creating poster; and

participate actively in the class discussion and activity.
Identify physical quantities in daily life
collect physical quantities classified to the fundamental quantities and derived quantities
Write out the five fundamental physical quantities and their units.
Differentiate fundamental and derived physical quantities

Lesson / Periods 1 and 2
Activities Teacher introduction
Student Introduction: Have the students introduce themselves
Present the classroom expectations. Discuss with students the classroom rules and procedures.
Let the students formulate their academic goals for this school year and facilitate the sharing.
Periods 3 and 4
Present the MYP global context. Students work in groups to create a poster regarding the
global context. Group presentation will follow. Ask the students: Which of the global contexts
is most appropriate in the Sciences?
Review the Sciences assessment criteria. Conduct a review exercises on the different
command terms found in the assessment criteria.
Discussion on metric system
Periods 5 and 6
Conduct a picture analysis that will require students to draw out the nature of Sciences.
Students recall the scope of PHYSICAL SCIENCES. Discuss the difference between physics
and chemistry. Perform some exercises to identify whether a field of study describes physics
or chemistry.
Present the units of study and the specific topics.
Introduce UNIT 1 key concepts and ideas and present the topics.
Introduce the concepts of Fundamental and Derived Quantities
Introduce the difference between mass and weight
Homework: Define the following: measurement, SI units, fundamental and derived units.
