TOPIC: Standard operating procedure for handling, calibrating and maintenance of an precision
electronic balance.
1.Objective:
2.Scope:
This SOP describe the optimal use and maintenance of a laboratory balance i.e a balance used to
measure mass to a high degree of precision. There are many types of laboratory balance but this
procedure is focus on precision electronic balance

3.Instrument Detail:
4.Responsibility:
QA/QC or Facilities department personnel are responsible for checking accuracy of balances
according to Calibration Management Schedule.
Facilities personnel are responsible for arranging Preventative Maintenance (PM) and calibration
of balances. All calibration documentation will be kept in the Calibration History Files.
Accuracy inspection documents for all Mettler analytical and pan balances used by the QA/QC
department will be kept in the Master Equipment Files (MEF)

5. Procedure:
5.1 Principle:
There are a few different technologies that are used in balances, but the majority of modern
digital balances (including ours) use a force restoration mechanism, so that's what we'll cover here.
Electromagnetic force restoration is often used in analytical balances. The very basic principle that
makes a balance a balance and not a scale is still the same: a counteracting force is created to be
compared to the unknown mass. The weighing pan is attached to an electromagnetic coil, through which
electric current is flowing. The coil floats in a magnetic field created by an amplifier. The amplifier
maintains the right current to keep the lever (remember, balance operate on the lever principle)
balanced with the mass on the pan. As more weight is applied to the pan, the current is increased to
maintain the level's position. The counteracting force that is created is measured and "translated" by
displayed number that is shown to the user
The balance should be installed on a solid, vibration-free surface, away from direct sunlight and at an
even temperature. It must be precisely levelled, using the built-in spirit level: the levelling foots of the
balance are turned until the air bubble is correctly positioned in the centre of the spirit level.
Protect the balance from drafts of air. Air moving across the pans will cause inaccurate readings.
Always keep the balance and weights clean and dry to protect them from corrosion.
Other items
Weighing paper;
Set of calibrating weights;
Dust brush.
5.5 Operation:
Power On: Press the ON/OFF key, and the display indicate in turn “200.000”, “………” At last it shall
display the weighing “X.XXX”. If any error founded in display, you may turn on and turn off the
balance once more. Then it will be operated normally.
5.6 Calibration:
Calibration Requirement
When distinct errors appeared in the weighing of balance, the balance shall be recalibrated to make
weighing accurate. The recalibrated balance shall be placed on the scale working platform without
the influence from the vibration of air current and strong electromagnetic wave. The calibration
result will be more accurate after turn on the scale and warm up for more than 20 min.
Calibration Procedure
Turn on the balance it shall display the weighing mode as “0.000”, then press “CAL” button until
shows “CAL”, then release. Display blinkingly the standard weight value and then place same value
standard weight; The “=====” will be displayed; then display stably weight value and remove
weight. Then “======” will be displayed. The “0.000” will be displayed. The calibration is finished.
5.7 Tare:
If there is container on the weighing tray, the balance displays the weight of container.
Press “O/T” and then then “0.000” will be displayed. It indicates that the tare has been deducted
Place the thing into container and balance will display the weight of thing
5.8 Weighing:
Turn on the balance to make it warm up stably and display “0.000”.
Place a thing on the weighing tray and display the weight of the thing. It indicates the weight is
already stable when the display value is not changed again.
5.9 Unit Charge
There are three units can be choose, you can press “UNIT”and choose the unit you need: g[gram],
CT[Carat], GSM[g/m2] etc.
5.10 Minimum weight setting:
Under the weighing range you need, you can choose the minimum weight as your requirement.
6 Quality Control
Daily
Using an appropriate milligram/gram weight, check daily that the weight registered by the balance
agrees with the calibrating weights. Record this check in the logbook.
Annually
Calibration of the balance should be carried out annually or after any repair or re-siting by a
qualified service technician and registered in the logbook.
Repair of the balance should be carried out by a qualified service technician.
