Prior Learning: Students should have a knowledge of the major Homologous Series and how to
draw the structures of each.

Learning Outcomes: Students who show a good grasp of content will be able to:

• Compare and contrast the two main sources of Hydrocarbons after a class discussion

• Explain fractional distillation after a class discussion

• Explain thermal cracking after a class discussion

• Explain and Contrast between the Reaction of Alkanes and Alkenes after a class activity

Distance Learning Note: The lessons explored during distance learning will take on a blended
approach, with the utilization of both the synchronous and asynchronous methods of
teaching. To ensure maximum understanding of all concepts the teacher will implore students
to use the "Pre-Study, Study, Re-Study Studying Method". In this method students will get the
learning materials beforehand along with explanatory videos and interactive learning tools on
the topic that will help the to "Pre-Study" (garner a knowledge of concept before synchronous
classes). Students will then be able to join live sessions as stipulated and clarifications will be
made for the materials uploaded and students will be able to voice questions, concerns or
suggestions. After each live session students will be given a revision activity that will help the
to retain information as a part of the "Study" aspect of the framework. After this is done and
assignments are marked and a knowledge of the students understanding of the concept has
been ascertained students will be able to "Restudy" on their own in preparation for quizzes
and/unit exams. It is the hope that this method will enhance the learning during online
school. For students unable to access online school "Pick-up Resources" will be made
available for them at the school.
Engagement:

Students will be allowed to watch a YouTube video entitled ‘Hydrocarbon Power!’ This video
will introduce where Hydrocarbons can be found and how they are able to be extracted from
their ore to be used in our daily lives, Students will also be able to see how these hydrocarbons
are useful in the world.

Exploration:

Students will be allowed to view the extraction and processing of Petroleum and natural gas to
see how it is removed from the earth. Students will also be able to understand the pros and cons
of extracting and using the petroleum and natural gas. Students will then be exposed to the
mechanism of thermal cracking and be shown how t is done and what organic compounds are
able to be obtained and how.

Explanation:

Students will be allowed to record all notes information into their books. Students will be shown
with aid of a shared screen whiteboard how different hydrocarbons react and how some are
made. Students will be able to observe the making of soap and esters to show the reactions of
some hydrocarbons. Students will also be able to understand why the different hydrocarbons are
able to react the way they do.

Elaboration:

Students will be asked to write down the reaction of each of the organ compound along with the
practice examples that were done to use for future reference. Student will also be asked to
complete different reactions of Organic Compounds to cement their understanding of the topic.
Students will also be asked to demonstrate the formation of Soap, Esters and Polymers

Evaluation:

Students will be allowed to complete an End of Unit Examination to evaluate their understanding
of the entire unit of Organic Chemistry (Introduction to Organic Chemistry, Reactions of
Organic Compounds, Sources of Organic Compounds and Polymers).
