PUBLIC SAFETY ALERT!

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
The catalytic converter is a critical component of your cars exhaust system. Thieves are
targeting these components for the precious metals contained inside.
Spot catalytic converter theft in your neighborhood.
Call 911 if you:
 Observe a vehicle double-parked in the street July 5th- August 12th
 See a car jacked up with an individual lying underneath it
Must provide proof of SCT residency, current medical, and photo I.D.
 Hear the sound of metal being cut
To prevent catalytic converter theft, use common sense and follow these tips:

• Park in well-lit areas

• Park close to building entrances or near a busy street

• Engrave your license plate number on the converter to make it traceable

• Purchase a vehicle security system and make sure it’s set to trigger with motion

• Examine different types of catalytic converter theft deterrent systems at your

SELC Stepping Up Ceremonies

BY: PAMELA STERN

There were decorations and balloons set up outside of the

Starrett Early Learning Center (SELC) for the students Stepping
Up ceremonies on their special day. All of the students showed
off their knowledge to their parents, and family members at
their Stepping Up Ceremonies. Each class had their own
individual Stepping Up Ceremony and demonstrated different
characteristics of learning from singing and dancing to
reciting the alphabet, and poems. The education that these
youngsters received is impeccable and is a testament to the
hard work of the SELC Staff under the direction of Executive
Director, Tammy Moore.
The Stepping Up Ceremonies took place outside of the SELC
building at 125 Schroeders Avenue from June 21st through
June 27th. Each ceremony had a special guest speaker who
gave words of wisdom. Nanda Prabhakar, Executive Director of
the Spring Creek Recreational Fund and Karin Montagne,
Public Affairs/Community Relations Coordinator reflected on
the progress that the students made. “As we honor our SELC
class of 2022, we must recognize this year has seen
them grow and develop in spite of the additional
challenges brought on by the global health crisis. They
have learned and flourished so much and have
remained eager and enthusiastic while doing so.
KUDOS TO ALL!,” said Montagne.
Each student was called up by their
lead teacher and was presented with a
certificate, while they posed for photos
with their teachers.
Executive Director, Tammy Moore
concluded each ceremony with
well wishes to all of the students.

Connect, Don’t Creep. As you prepare to meet your new roommate and

opinions about them before you even get to know each other. You’ve likely
changed quite a bit through your high school years, and likely so have
others. And let’s be real – it’s easy to misrepresent yourself online.

The Dragon Boat Festival Makes a Fiery Return to Queens

BY AMANDA MOSES

The 30th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival blazed back in full
force to Flushing Meadows, Corona Park after running at limited
capacity for the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On July 30th and 31st, the free multicultural festival saw thousands
of attendees traversing the parkland enjoying dragon boat races,
giveaways from a wide array of booths, dozens of food trucks, and so
much more. With performances honoring Asian American Pacific
Islander (AAPI) culture, the event organizers sought to bring about
awareness to anti-Asian hate crimes as well as encourage wellness
through continued COVID-19 testing and vaccinations.
The Dragon Boat Festival became a time-honored tradition based on
the legend of a poet named Court Minister Qu Yuan who was exiled from
his home region of Chu after disagreeing with the king on how his
people were treated. His homeland was invaded, leaving Yuan to be so
overwhelmed with despair he threw himself into the Mu Lo River. A
nearby fisherman attempted to save Yuan by racing up the river,
banging a drum and splashing his paddle to deter the fish and water
dragons from eating the poet, but despite his efforts Yuan drowned. Let the races commence!
What was once observed by the fishman in Lantau, Lamma crossed
the seas from Asia to America, where racers board a boat that has a
dragon head crafted onto it. Each dragon boat holds 18 paddlers, a
drummer and a steers person to compete against over 150 teams to
become champions.

The Cave of Adullam Wins Big at Tribeca Film Festival

BY AMANDA MOSES

“It’s easier to raise boys than repair broken men,” is a phrase Actor/Producer
coined by Frederick Douglass that Jason Wilson utilizes as a mantra Laurence Fishburne
when training at-risk youth in his martial arts academy in Detroit—
The Cave of Adullam Transformational Academy.
Wilson’s efforts to uplift the young men in his community through
transformative work caught the attention of producer and actor
Laurence Fishburne and many other high profile film producers
sparking what has become an award-winning documentary.
The Cave of Adullam is a documentary that made its world premiere
at the Tribeca Film Festival’s Village East Angelika on June 13th.
Directed by Laura Checkoway, this heartfelt film sheds light on the
obstacles Black youth experience as they become adults. Wilson
created a martial arts institute that molds the minds of young boys
into more than a discipline, and what he learned was that his pupils
are accustomed to negativity and a hardness that should, instead, be
replaced with love, comfort, and support.
Checkoway’s showcase of a martial arts academy exhibits mental
wellness and the nationwide need for support for marginalized
communities. In this documentary we learn that Wilson transformed
his own life from what could have been a dangerous path and worked
toward cultivating stability and guidance for at-risk youth through
martial arts. He encourages his pupils to cry and share their
emotions, instead of bottling them up inside.
“This is a really wonderful film. I think it’s going to touch people.
It’s great to be doing it here in New York. We’re grateful to the Tribeca
Film Festival and their selection committee for choosing us,”
Laurence Fishburne said.
“There’s a lot of different modalities that people are investigating
and exploring their terms of mental health and wellness and what I
like to call mental wellness as opposed to mental health issues. So,
this film kind of deals with another modality in terms of gathering
these boys and giving them some instruction, discipline, some tools,
some practical things that they can do to nurture themselves and look
after themselves,” Fishburne said.

The Cave of Adullam won best documentary and film editing at the
Tribeca Film Festival award ceremony.

By Jeanne Benavidez

Prep time: 30 Min

Ingredients
30 cherry tomatoes (about 1-1/4 pints)
2-3 medium avocados, pitted, peeled & cut up
4 oz cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 tsp garlic salt (or to taste)
1/2 tsp black pepper (or to taste)
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp onion, grated or very finely diced

Directions
1. Cut a thin slice from the top of each tomato so you can scoop out the
seeds. (I also cut a very thin slice from the bottom of each tomato so
they stand upright.)
2. Using a small melon baller, carefully scoop out the inside of the
tomatoes.
3. Turn them upside down on a paper towel lined cookie sheet and let
them stand for about 30 minutes to drain. You can either add the pulp
into the filling mixture, or, if there are too many seeds, just discard the
pulp.
4. Meanwhile prepare the filling...put avocado, cream cheese, garlic
salt, pepper and lemon juice in a food processor. Cover and pulse until
smooth.
