About Avanti
and the
Technology

All platforms operate from Avanti’s new and existing GES sites currently
located in GHY UK, CYP Cyprus, Johannesburg South Africa and Nigeria
West Africa.

On April 5th 2018, Avanti successfully launched its new High Throughput
Satellite, HYLAS 4, delivering cost-effective and high-speed broadband
across Africa and Europe.

The new Ka-band satellite will provide high speed connectivity to our growing
customer base across Broadband, Enterprise, Carrier and Government
customers. Avanti’s HYLAS 4 satellite will double the capacity of its existing
fleet and will cover over 35 countries across the globe. The addition of HYLAS
4 will see Avanti complete its coverage across Africa, in addition to having the
capability to cover markets across Latin America. These markets can be
reached through the satellite’s four steerable beams which can be placed
anywhere across the Earth’s disk visible from the orbital slot of the satellite.

Quality. Flexibility.
About Avanti
and the
Technology

• HYLAS 1 and HYLAS 4 are located in a geostationary orbits at 33.5º West.

• HYLAS 2 is located in a geostationary orbit at 31.0º East.
• H1 Broadband connections are provided by 8 circularly polarized, Ka-band spot beams.
• H2 Broadband connections are provided by 24 circularly polarized, Ka-band spot beams.
• H4 Broadband connections are provided by 68 circularly polarized, Ka-band spot beams.
• Circular Polarization: In a circularly-polarized antenna, the plane of polarization rotates in a
corkscrew pattern making one complete revolution during each wavelength. A circularly polarized
wave radiates energy in the horizontal, vertical planes as well as every plane in between. If the
rotation is clockwise looking in the direction of propagation, the sense is called right-hand-
circular (RHC). If the rotation is counter-clockwise, the sense is called left-hand- circular(LHC).
• Circular polarization improves the signal quality and is less susceptible to weather degradation
such as rain fade.

Quality. Flexibility.
Why use
Ka-band?

• Traditionally satellites in Europe use Ku-band to give pan-European

coverage
• Great for TV broadcasting
• But – wide coverage means low data rates

• HYLAS Satellites use Ka-band which enables “Spot Beam” coverage to

be achieved
• Great for broadband because of high frequency wave length
• Spot beams mean high power and high data rates
• High growth in broadband demand from video consumption (e.g., I
Player and iTunes)

Training Introduction

The purpose of the Training Module is to enable the Installer to install and
commission the satellite modem system using the Avanti mobile assist
application (it is the same process for all vendors and equipment types).

Note: The primary method of all installations into the Avanti network should be
first attempted using the AMA - Avanti Mobile Assist application which is
available via the google play store. Using this method will enable the installer to
locate the satellite signal, commission the modem, complete onsite testing and
link the hardware to the customers account which in turn allows equipment
linking and reporting in our operating system OSS.

This system is automated, so very minimal input so less margin for errors.

AMA Overview

The AMA (Avanti mobile Assist) is an application designed and maintained by Avanti
Communications, It was developed to reduce costs for the installation and to allow quick
and easy installation. It is available free of charge from google play store. Only available
on Android.

The AMA is the primary installation method across all platforms currently available using
the Avanti fleet of satellites, the benefits of using the AMA include:

• Reduced cost for installers, no need for satellite meter, inclinometer and laptop.
• Enables the installer to identify the location of the satellite during survey using the
satellite finder function
• Allows the installer to align the antenna to the satellite using it’s in built highly
accurate satellite meter function
• Obtains GPS coordinates
• Automatic modem commissioning
• Automatic hardware linking to the customers account and SLA
• In depth reporting and installation tests/reporting and uploading of site photographs.
Equipment overview

Vendor and equipment types are selected during job creation, when you select
the job, all details should be seen.

avanticommunications Quality. Flexibility

Equipment overview

If you need to change equipment types, due to incorrect details, testing,

or demonstration purposes. Select the item you want to change using the
drop down menu (using Newtec as an example). Will only show dish and
modem types available for the vendor selected.

Vendor Dish Modem

Equipment overview

Setting the polarisation on the transceiver.

The transceiver requires the installer to select the correct beam polarisation depending
on which beam the installer is using, A PDF will be made available to the installer for
each customer which will advise the installer which setting they require, this will also be
available in the AMA job section once the installation has been assigned to the installer,
in each beam it will be either Right Hand (RHCP) or Left Hand (LHCP).
A beam / polarisation table for Hylas 2 + 4 is included at the end of these slides
If this is not set correctly, you will not find the satellite.
Equipment overview

On the Newtec equipment, to set the correct polarisation the installer can use a coin or
driver to set the polarisation as seen below. The setting is based on the TX polarity and
requires the RX to be set to the opposite Pol.
Equipment overview

The skyware 3W transceiver is compatible with all Gilat equipment and other vendors and dish
sizes and uses twin cable for RX & TX with compression F connectors recommended.

The easiest way to identify the polarity is by standing behind the ODU looking into the antenna
reflector (feed horn pointing away from you) the waveguide will be seen to slant to either the
Right (RHCP TX) or to the Left (LHCP TX), this identifies the polarisation that is set. To change
the settings, remove the 4 screws (seen above) and twist ¼ of a turn either way then replace
screws.
Equipment overview

The Hughes transceiver is compatible with all Hughes equipment and dish sizes using
single cable for RX & TX with compression F connectors recommended.

The way to identify the polarity is by markings L or R on the transceiver. To change the
settings, remove the 4 screws (seen above) and turn to required setting, then replace
screws.

check, agree dish, cable and modem location
with customer.
• Selecting and mounting the antenna bracket
• Assemble and mount antenna
• Install Cabling and use correct standards using
compression connectors
• Connect and commissioning terminal / modem
using AMA
• Complete tests and report

Quality. Flexibility.
Line of Sight

• Before any installation is carried out a ‘Line of sight check’ should always be
completed. Do not start job until LOS found.
• This is one of the most important requirements that needs to be accurately
determined
• Line of site requirements are:
• A clear view of the sky @ 33.5° West or 31.0 ° East with no
obstructions in the vicinity such as trees (remember they grow),
buildings, overhead power cables or mobile phone masts which can
cause interference
• Check line of sight using the AMA app (Sat Finder / Line of sight view)
• Line of site requirements should always come before mounting
location aesthetics

See below screen shots

Selecting and
Mounting the
Antenna Bracket

• There are several different mount options available.

• Most of the smaller antennas uses a canister or clamp on style mount we recommend
a 60mm pole.
• The larger types (98cm, 1m and 1.2m antenna) require a 76mm diameter pole which
has to be exact.
• All wall brackets should be mounted using M10 Rawl-bolts
• It is VERY IMPORTANT that the bracket is fully plumbed when mounting, failure to
observe this instruction may lead to severe difficulties when trying to align the antenna
system and therefore not achieving the max possible signal.

Quality. Flexibility.
Cabling
Standards

AVANTI STANDARD CABLE SPECIFICATION:

• All CAI approved
• WF100 shotgun and WF125 (single or dual cable available)
• WF125 direct burial grade cable can be used for Kingpost installs
• Air flow cable should NOT be used

MAXIMUM CABLE LENGTHS:

• The ‘standard installation’ will have up to 30 metres of cable however, ‘non-standard’
installations could be anything up to the maximum for the cable type. Installed cables
should be kept to a minimum length whenever possible as this can affect the
performance of the terminal.
• WF100 / CT100 maximum cable length deployed 50 meters
• WF125 / CT125 maximum cable length deployed 75 meters

Quality. Flexibility.
Cabling
Standards

• Cables should be secured to the wall with cable clips - on vertical runs these should be
a maximum of 50cm apart and on the horizontal 30cm (or hammer length) apart. Cables
can be secured behind downpipes etc using cable ties.

• A drip loop should be used at all cable entry points, these should then be sealedwith
silicon and protected with a blast plate and a grommet on the internal side.

• A one meter service loop should be left at theantenna.

Quality. Flexibility.
Cabling
Standards

SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER

• Ensure you agree the cable route with the customer
• Run cables at low level to avoid ladder work where
possible
• Ensure cable runs are kept to a minimum length
• Ensure all cables are adequately secured
• Ensure all entry points are water tight
• Do Not attach RF cables to mains power cables,
at best this will cause interference but more
importantly this is dangerous to both the customer,
engineer and the equipment.

Quality. Flexibility.
Connectors
and
Termination

TYPE OF CONNECTORS
Avanti recommend you use Webro/Cablecon compression connectors

FITTING COMPRESSION CONNECTORS

When fitting compression connectors ensure you remember the following:
• Only use the correct connector for the cable type you are using
• Use a proper cable stripping tool, not a knife as this will damage the cable
• Use the correct compression tool for the connectors you are using
• Ensure you assemble the cable/connector properly
• Silicon dielectric grease should be used on all external connections
• External connections should all be tightened to the correct torque using a f-con
spanner
• Rx cables at the rear of the terminal should be marked

Quality. Flexibility.
Assembly of the
Ka
Antenna

• The Avanti broadband connection uses Ka band antenna and transceiver

assembly.
• Care should be taken when assembling the antenna
• Full assembly instructions can be found packed with the antenna you
have been supplied
• Ensure all bolts and fittings are torque to the correct level when
installation and alignment are completed

Quality. Flexibility.
Antenna
Alignment

POINTS TO REMEMBER:

• Ensure the power is disconnected prior to connecting any cables

to the terminal or ODU
• Ensure clear Line Of Sight
• Maximise the receive signal during antenna pointing
• Ensure all locking nuts are fully tightened on the antenna and no
loss of signal has occurred.

Quality. Flexibility.
AMA
Auto
Commissioning

AUTO COMMISSION OF AVANTI EQUIPMENT

• Once antenna alignment has been completed, the next step is to

complete the auto commission using the AMA app
• The AMA will check the signal levels during the initial part of the
auto commission, this confirms the antenna pointing details and
signal levels are above the required minimum.
• When auto commission completes you should be able to browse the
internet

Quality. Flexibility.
AMA OverviewAMOverview
AMA Overview

To set the AMA up the installer will either need to use the inbuilt Wi-Fi on selected models or in most
cases use a Cable style wireless router to increase distance, which will be attached to the modem as
described below (IPs below are an example and dependant on equipment vendor being installed).

Cable to dish

The installer should connect the smartphone to the Wi-Fi router which is now attached to the modem.
If the installer opens the browser on the phone and types in 192.168.*.* (Dependant on vendor)
The home page should be visible, this confirms the connection is set correct.
AMA Overview

Connection trouble shooting: If the GUI page is not visible when typing in the IP of the
modem in the smartphone’s browser(192.168.*.*) the installer may need to change the
settings on the WAN settings on the selected wireless router.

Once the connection is correct you can now launch the AMA.
AMA Preparation

launch the application and log in using the OSS username and password supplied by
Avanti after training has been provided.

The customer’s account will have been created in advance by the resellers or by Avanti
dependant on what type of contract is in place with Avanti, once the engineer has been
certified by Avanti they will be added to our system and will be available to have jobs
added to their account. The Avanti operating system called OSS will assign a job to the
installer which can be retrieved to the device by syncing the AMA.
Note: This should be done where mobile signal or Wi-Fi is available prior to going
to site.
AMA Preparation

Once logged into the AMA the installer will need to sync the AMA, the AMA will connect to
our server and save any ‘New Installations’ that have been assigned to the engineer, this
will be completed over a cellular service or Wi-Fi, Its very important to do this prior to
going to site as generally satellite broadband installations are in remote locations.
AMA Alignment & Commissioning

The installation process using AMA consists of 5 steps:

1. Location and configuration

2. Dish placement
3. Alignment and commissioning
4. Service and speed test
5. Reporting

The installer should check the correct customer has been selected, the information will
include the polarisation for the transceiver, the name address of the client, the job code
and device number, the hub which the device has been provisioned, the satellite and
beam to be used and the package the customer has signed up for.

Once the assigned job can be seen and is verified to be correct the installer can move to
the next step by clicking on the arrow in the top right of the screen.
AMA Alignment & Commissioning

On Selection of the Customers job you will see the following screens, also may be told no
modem type has been defined, please select the equipment being used.

If the AMA is unable to connect to the modem it will automatically prompt the installer
for the IP address of the modem as shown in the above last screenshot.
AMA Alignment & Commissioning

Next is the antenna alignment, having previously used the satellite finder function, take a
note of an object where the satellite finder function has shown where the satellite is
located. The installer will also know the elevation setting for the antenna and will set it 3
degrees below the target elevation. Adjusting the elevation sweep by 1 degree and the
azimuth 5 degrees either side of the known satellite location. The alignment process
involves finding the target satellite, once a signal is achieved which is demonstrated
below, the main canister bolts should be tightened and the fine tuning mechanism should
be used for both elevation and azimuth to fine point the antenna to ensure maximum
signal to the satellite.

Remember to move the antenna very slowly as the beam is narrow and can be difficult to
find if moving to fast.
AMA Alignment & Commissioning

Satellite found (Not target) Aligned dish (target)

AMA Alignment & Commissioning

There is also the option of using the tone on the AMA which will get louder as the signal
gets stronger, select activate beep to use this function alongside with the meter page.
use this function alongside with the meter page.

Very important
After maximum signal is achieved
remember to tighten all the azimuth
fine adjustment locking nuts, as well as
the elevation locking nuts before going
on to the next step.
AMAAMA
Alignment & Commissioning
Alignment & Commissioning (Plan A)

Once the installer clicks the arrow to move on to the next step after successfully aligning the
antenna the modem will begin its auto commission process, this usually takes 3-4 minutes.

The modem is now online, and the next section should be completed.
AMA Reporting

The final step of the installation is the speed tests and reporting section. This sets the job
to completed, allows photographs from the installation to be added to the account which
will be visible in OSS.

Speed tests.
The AMA will start a series of tests, IP connectivity, download/upload tests and latency.
This information will also be visible in OSS to ensure SLA is being met and a good
service is provided to the end user.

Installation report (must be completed).

A series of photos will be requested which are uploaded in the final steps, this should
include a LOS photo, front and rear view of the antenna and a copy of a customer sign
off sheet (if applicable).

Finally the below shows the information the installer is required to input, the cable length,
the mount used, the type of cable used and the serial number of the transceiver and
modem, the application uses the ZXing Barcode Scanner in order to scan/parse QR
codes/barcodes and will work in tandem with the AMA or the serial number can be added
manual. However, please note that this is not necessary requirement to run the
application, it is only used for scanning hardware barcodes.
