THE PROBLEM AND IT'S BACKGROUND

Introduction

Advanced trim and stability can be deemed as one of the most important

areas of focus in ship design and operation, not only to ensure the safety of the

ship, cargo, crew and passengers, but also to enable proper conditions for

completion of all the processes on a ship.

This series of articles will first discuss the concept of hydrostatics of a

ship, and slowly transition into an introduction of ship stability. Once that is done,

we will see how the concepts are applied in real-time and probable situations to

analyse the stability of the ship, how a designer applies concepts of hydrostatics

and stability to develop a hull form, and so on. (marineinsight.com)

Solving and calculating trim and stability is a skill which involved a

countless of computation and understanding. In school students are taught some

calculation skills. In today's current situation "covid-19 pandemic", we cannot

denied that learning the said subject will be challenging and this is one of the

most important skills onboard. Advanced trim and stability has been playing a

major role especially on captaincy license and other onboard purposes.

Hence, Educational System Technological Institute aims to produce

graduates who can understand and embody the skill in the subject. From this the

the researchers wants to know the level of proficiency in Advance trim and

stability of 3rd year BSMT students.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Foreign Literature and Studies

Ship's stability is one of the most important and complex concept about

safety of ship and safety of navigation and it is governed by maritime law as well

as maritime codes. The paper presents the importance of ship's intact stability as

part of the general concept of ship's seaworthiness. There is always a correlation

between ship' stability and safety of ship and safety of navigation. Loss of ship's

stability is presented as a threat to safety of navigation. We are going to present

the causes that lead to ship stability failure and their impact on safety of

navigation. A study of various ship stability casualties in heavy weather

conditions are going to be presented, the causes are going to be analyzed and

the possible ways of stability failures are assessed. Vessel's intact stability is a

fundamental component of seaworthiness so it is in the interest of all

owners/operators to learn about this topic and ensure that their vessel possesses

a satisfactory level of stability in order to ensure its safety as well as that of the

people on board the ship. Understanding ship's stability, trim, stress, and the

basics of ship's construction is a key to keeping a ship seaworthy. The findings of

22

EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation
Murallon, Boac, Marinduque

this study can be beneficial to the maritime safety administrations to adopt

decision-making on maritime safety management, but it is also important to carry

out statistics and analysis of marine casualties to help to adopt proper safety

management measures. Moreover, the study can be a useful guidance for

masters and officers on board vessel in order to understand the factors that

contribute to ship stability failure during the voyage not only in port during

loading operations and to take preventive measures to avoid to put the ship in

such a dangerous situations.

Nowadays, loss of ship stability leads to an increasing number of

accidents having unfortunately serious consequences such as damage of goods,

loss of ships and lives. Ships design and construction also suffered a great deal of

change when it comes to deadweight capacity and hydrodynamic forms due to

the fact that the variety of cargo carried by ships increased, cargo which also

needs to be rapidly delivered to consignees and therefore ships’ speed also

needed to be improved. In the last decade, losing the stability of the ship created

significant trouble especially due to the different ways in which such a situation

happened. This is why attention needed to be paid to each one of this ways

separately and also considering the context of rough seas. Therefore, the new

ships were confronted with large amplitude rolling caused by parametric rolling,

loss of stability broaching or surf-riding, all of these being considered significantly

relevant for large container vessels. Even though from a theoretical point of view

these dangers were very well known in the past, it was only recently that further

attention was given to preventing and regulating such situations. Unfortunately

23

EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation
Murallon, Boac, Marinduque

an increasing number of ships were affected by such dangerous situations which

led to loosing cargo and ships sometimes even affecting human lives.

The stability of the ship is important because no matter what, you cannot

protect the same from a bad weather. If the ship is not stable enough it cannot

survive a storm. We will now in this short article discuss about what is ship trim

and its effect on ship stability.

The shape and the design of the ship is a very important to ensure the

stability of the same. The ship trim is the difference between the forward draft

and the aft draft. This ensures that the ship is stable no matter what the

situation is. However, the calculation is not as simple as it looks like. There are

lot technicalities that are involved in the calculation.

The general idea on what are ship trim and its effect on ship stability. It is

indeed a very important factor that maintains the stability of the ships when in

the high sea. Especially in the time of rough weather the ship trim is of really

great help to all. The stability of the ship is of prime importance.

http://www.marine-knowledge.com/marine-navigation/what-is-ship-trim-and-its-

effect-on-ship-stability/

According to marineandoffshoreinsight.com, why do you need all this

knowledge as ship operator? You need this information or knowledge because

the above calculation can be equal to zero if you mistake them. Therefore that
24

EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTE

can lead your ship to capsize, list, etc. This information is not only for chief mate

or deck department. They are general knowledge all seafarers most know.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary of the results of the previously

conducted experimental tests. Conclusions were drawn from these findings of the

research and recommendations were made and given.

Findings

This research was conducted to know the level of proficiency of the 3rd

year BSMT students in Educational Systems Technological Institute for Advance

trim and stability subject only S.Y. 2020-2021. The findings shows that majority

of the students age ranges from 21 to 23, and mostly the students were single

with 83% of male and 17% female and 7% of married students.

Based on the result, the students always participate during online class

and take/prepare for the quiz and examination as well as parents must monitor

their child to ensure that they are participating the online class with the

weighted means of 2.83, 2.5 and 1.4, respectively. However, there are

they missed or no internet connection with the weighted means of 1.4 and 1.2,

respectively. In addition, the subject instructor always explains the objective of

the lesson clearly at the start of each class with the weighted mean of 1.3.

Furthermore, the students have different perspective regarding on how the

subject instructor clearly explains the lesson.

In terms of student’s practices and subject instructor teaching skills during

online class, the students often study hard to improve their academic

performance with the weighted mean of 1.73. The subject instructor is often

organized in explaining the subject topic and updated with the present trends

relevant subject matter with the weights means of 1.7 and 1.8, respectively.

Furthermore, students strongly agreed that instructors must develop different

strategy of teaching that fits on online class like video presentations with the

weighted mean of 2.

The result of the study shows that majority of the students got the

average grade of 80-82%, unfortunately only 4 student got the highest grade

which is 83-85%. Nevertheless, even if the highest grade got the lowest rank it

will be a satisfactory still. The student average grade reflects that the subject

instructor often uses various strategies, aid/devices and technique in presenting

the lesson and has familiar to the subject matter during online class with the

same weighted mean of 1.6. Furthermore, based on the observation of the

researcher during the online class that most of student has difficulty in

understanding the subject especially it is more on solving. Hence, this grade

does not reflect the ability of the instructor to teach the subject and students

must find a way to have an internet connection and adapt to the new system of

learning.

Conclusions

Based on the results of the study, the students are always participate

during the online class and take and prepare for the quiz and examination,

parents must monitor their child to ensure that they are participating the online

class. They sometimes study their lesson before the online class. These are the

common practices of the 3rd year BSMT students in Educational Systems

Technological Institute for Advance trim and stability subject only S.Y. 2020-

2021.

Meanwhile, the students study hard to improve their academic

performance. The most common problem is that the students sometimes study

the lesson they missed if he/she was absent or no internet connection. The

clearly explains the lesson. The subject instructor uses various strategies,

aid/devices and technique in presenting the lesson and has familiar to the subject

matter during online class, as a result most of the students got an satisfactory of

80-82% of grade which shows learning Advanced Trim and Stability during
