of Electrical Installation and Maintenance NC II, a course which
comprises the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for you to possess.
The module Layouting and Installing Electrical Wiring Using Knob
and Tube Method contains training materials and activities related to
identifying learner’s requirements, preparing session plan, preparing basic
instructional materials and organizing learning and teaching activities for
you to complete.
In this module, you are required to go through a series of learning
activities in order to complete each learning outcome. In each learning
outcome are Information Sheets, Self-Checks, Task Sheets, and Job
Sheets. Follow and perform the activities on your own. If you have
questions, do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your teacher.

Remember to:
 Read Information sheets and complete the Self-Checks.
Note: It is required to get the passing score before you can
perform the Task Sheet or Job Sheet.
 Perform the Task Sheets or Job Sheets until you are confident that
your outputs conform to the Performance Criteria Checklist that
follows the sheets.
 Submit output of the Task Sheets and Job Sheets to your teacher for
evaluation and recording in the Accomplishment Chart. Outputs
shall serve as your portfolio during the Institutional Competency
Evaluation. When you feel confident that you have had sufficient
practice, ask your teacherh to evaluate you. The results of your
evaluation will be recorded in the Progress Chart and
Accomplishment Chart.

You must pass the Institutional Competency Evaluation for this competency
before moving to another competency. A Certificate of Achievement will be

INFORMATION SHEET 1
Principles of Knob and Tube Wiring

Learning Objectives
At the end of this Information Sheet, you must be able to:
1. Enumerate the four common methods of wiring.
2. Apply the NEC/PEC rules in knob-and-tube wiring.
3. Use electrical tools properly.
4. Install two lamps/bulbs controlled by two tumbler switches individually in
different locations.
5. Observe safety precautions in wiring.

Electrical wiring may be classified as residential, commercial and

industrial. Residential wiring covers all electrical installations done on
residential houses and buildings. Commercial wiring is done on commercial
establishments like supermarkets, barber shops, department stores, etc.
Industrial wiring done in industrial shops, textile mills, auto assembly plans,
etc.

Methods of wiring. There are four ways of wiring a house or a building. Each
way or method has a particular style which is characterized by the materials
used. The four methods of wiring are: (1) knob-and tube wiring, (2) raceway
wiring, (3) flexible conduit wiring, and (4) rigid conduit wiring. In this module,
we shall discuss the knob-and-tube wiring.

Knob-and-tube wiring. This method of wiring is the cheapest among the four
and the most common. It uses mostly the split knobs, porcelain tubes, and
mica tubes. Have you seen this type of wiring?
If you peer inside the ceiling of your house, you will see wires strung on knobs.
Can you give a reason why the knobs and wires are hidden inside the ceiling?
Rules in knob-and-tube wiring. All electrical wirings are regulated by a set of
rules. For knob-and-tube wiring, the rules are very simple. Study the rules
carefully because you will need them when you do your actual wiring.
1. The knobs must have a 30 cm (1 foot) distance apart. The more knobs used,
the better. Can you explain why?
2. The distance between two parallel conductors should be at maximum of 15
centimeters and at a minimum distance of 6 cm. (2 ½ inches) apart. The
farther apart they are, the better. Why? Do not attach 2 conductors to the
same porcelain knob.
3. Circular loom or mica should be used to protect wires that are in contact
with wooden surfaces. Mica should also be used at convenience outlets,
ceiling outlets, and switches.

4. Extend about l5 centimeters of wire

beyond the loom or mica for making
the connections at the switch or
ceiling outlet. Give extra wire for the
slack or unexpected movement of the
ceiling such as in earthquakes.

5. Switches are placed 4 feet to 1-1/2

meter above the floor. They should be

placed opposite the hinged side of the

door.

6. When two conductors cross each

other, separate them by a porcelain

or mica. This is done to minimize the

occurrence of short circuits.

II Page 13 of 23

and-Tube Method Revision # 01
7. A split knob should be used whenever
a tap is made. A tap is the connecting
point of the end of one wire to some
point along the length of another
wire. Tapping means getting current
from it.

8. The ceiling receptacle is usually

placed in the center of the ceiling. If

the room is rectangular, mentally

divide the room and place one ceiling

outlet at the center of each half.

9. Convenience outlets should be

installed about one and one-half meter
above the floor. In modern houses, the
outlet is p1aced 30 centimeters above
the floor. Kitchen outlets should be
conveniently located.

10. Deadend conductors on a knob or

cleat. The end of the wire should not
be left dangling in the ceiling. It
should be dead-ended, that is, the
wire end should be turned in the
opposite direction and wrapped
around the conductor.

and-Tube Method Revision # 01
11. If there are kinks or knots in the wire,

remove them first before installing the

wire. Wire should be pulled straight

before attaching it to the split knobs.

12. All electrical joints should be properly

taped and insulated. No part of the
wire should be bare or exposed. Use
plastic or rubber tape evenly on the
joints.

13. Use wood/plastic moulding when wire

runs down to the switch. The moulding

hides the two wires from view. What do

you think is the reason why split knobs

should not be used in this case?

14. Do not use wire smaller than No.14

in lighting circuits. No. 12 wire
should be used in appliance circuits
and from No. 10 to No. 8 wire, in
oven and range circuits.

In the open or exposed wiring

method, the wires are visible and are

supported by the knobs. These knobs

may be a split or solid type. This is

shown in figure 1.

Split knobs are used to
support wires smaller than No. 8.
Solid knobs are used to support or
anchor wires as big as No. 8 or
even bigger. Screws or nails may
be used to fasten the knobs. When
a nail is used a leather washer
should be placed between the nail
head and the insulator to form
cushion and protect the insulator
from breaking. See figure 2.

Advantages of the Knob and Tube wiring:

1. It is used in temporary installation, such as construction jobs.
2. It is economical when properly installed.
3. It has a lower operating temperature because of ventilation brought by
distances of the installation.

Safety reminders when installing knob and tube wiring.
1. Apply enough pressure on the gimlet when driving it to the wood board.
Never hammer it.
2. Have the auger brace oiled regularly especially the ratchet type.
3. Have your electrician’s knife sharpened enough in order not to nick the wire.
4. Use the appropriate screw driver for the screw.
5. Be sure that the conductors in contact with the wiring surface are enclosed
in mica tubing.
6. Be sure that your teacher has checked your work before testing.
7. Be sure that the safety switch is off before making any connection. Apply
tape on all joints/splices.
8. Do not drive the split-knobs completely before the conductors or wires are
run or inserted along the grooves of the knobs.
9. Be sure to test the insulation for short and ground circuit before putting on
the power.

Electrical wiring board. In your

electrical shop, there is an
electrical wiring board. Use this
board for the practical wiring.
Since it is not possible for you to
do actual house wiring jobs, you
have to use the wiring board as
though it were the real job. You
must therefore apply the rules in
knob-and-tube wiring as much
as practicable. You are now
dealing with high voltage and you
should be extra careful in
handling live circuits. It is best
that you work in pairs or in
groups of threes. As a general
rule, after you are through with
the job, have the circuit checked
by your teacher before you test
it.
