EASY LISTENING
Introduction to Listening Comprehension

BASIC INFORMATION

Listening Comprehension
Weightage • 10% of the total English PSLE score
Format • 7 texts and 20 MCQ questions in total

Text 1 to 3: Picture-based questions with 2 to 3

questions per text
Text 4 to 7: Purely text-based questions with 3 to 4
questions each
1nnnft
Duration • About 35 minutes

Each text will be read twice and students are required to read the questions
while listening to the text.

To succeed in this component, students need to demonstrate understanding

of the content of the various types of spoken texts. Students need to listen
out for direct information and also read (listen!) between the lines.

TEXT TYPES TESTED

There are many different types of listening comprehension passages. Some of

the more common text types include:

• Newspaper reports
• Radio shows
• Podcasts
• Advertisements
• Conversations between two people, who are either friends or relatives
• Announcements
• Story

QUESTION TYPES TESTED

There are three main types of questions that you may come across:

1) Direct questions
2) Inferential questions
3) Trickier questions

These questions will test students’ ability to identify key messages, main
ideas and details. They also need to infer and draw conclusions by listening
closely.

Direct questions
The answers for direct questions can be found in the passage. Most of the
time, they start with “Who”, “What”, “When”, and “Where”. Sometimes, they
may start with “Why”, as well.

Ear Buddy’s Tip:

Pay attention to dates, times, and places, as well as the activities

that the characters engage in.

Inferential questions
The second question type is the inference question.

Most of the time, the student will have to listen carefully and come to a
logical conclusion to the question. Some inferential questions may also
require students to understand the overall or main idea of the passage. Here
are some examples of inference questions:

“How do you think ____ was feeling?”

“What do you think is the moral of the story?”

“What is the purpose of this text?”

At other times, the answer to the question may be differently worded e.g.
happy [in the question/options given] = jumped with joy [in the passage],
so be on the lookout for that.
Ear Buddy’s Tip:

To strategise, briefly read questions first to have a general

understanding of what will be asked. Remember that you can read
the questions at any point in time during the exam!

Trickier questions
There are some questions that are trickier. Some of these questions require
you to listen carefully and not get the sequence of events mixed up.
Sometimes, these questions also require you to pay close attention to how the
characters word their statements and not to interpret what they have said
wrongly.

Ear Buddy’s Tip:

Use the keywords in the question as a guide to track your

answer! Do make sure to read the entire option to ensure that
the details are accurate too.

If you have already shaded your answers and are confident that you did not
make any careless mistakes, you may read the questions for the next
passage.

Please pay attention to the question keywords and what the question is
asking for.

We hope that you will enjoy this listening course!
