Your task is to respond in text essay format to an unseen prompt based on the text; Home Fire by Kamila
Shamsie. You are expected to construct a full text response essay comprising of an introduction, three to four
clear body paragraphs and a conclusion that resolves the prompt.

PROMPT 1: Home Fire reveals that the values of individuals are shaped by their circumstances. Discuss
PROMPT 2: Explore how different perspectives on a controversy have been represented in Home Fire.
PROMPT 3: Discuss how voice has been crafted in Home Fire to reveal an inner or hidden conflict.
SCSA LINKS:
Students identify, discuss and analyse decisions directors have made. They explore how directors use structures,
conventions and language to represent characters, settings, events, explore themes, and build the world of the
text for the reader.
Students investigate how the meaning of a text is affected by the contexts in which it is created and read. The
texts set as the focus of this area of study should have literary merit and be worthy of close study. These texts may
be fiction or non-fiction and presented in written forms.
Students consider the similarities and differences between the mentor texts, developing awareness that some
features are specific to texts, while others are similar across texts. Students are encouraged to draw on prior
knowledge and supplementary material to broaden and deepen their understanding of texts.
ASSESSMENT CONDITIONS:
• This is a FULL text response essay
• You need 1 x clear introduction introducing THREE ideas that link to the prompt
• You then need 3 x comprehensive body paragraphs each denoting TWO of the THREE main
ideas you have chosen to explore (you may do more then THREE body paragraphs if you
choose)
• The assessment will be 60 minutes writing time with 4 minutes reading time
• You should write in a BLUE or BLACK pen
• Your response will be handwritten in this booklet
• You may have access to a dictionary for the duration of the assessment
• You will not be allowed to have access to notes of any sort during the assessment
