Introduction: Prof. Nix’s presents

A Comparative Study of Two Catalysts with
ELEPHANT’S TOOTHPASDTE Experiment

1 At the Science Room – Nixon is seated

NIXON
Hi everyone! Today, I will demonstrate the Elephant’s
Toothpaste Experiment using two catalysts.

2 Showing of Materials

[Captions]
We need the following materials!
2 Erlenmeyer Flasks with 2 glass plates
Dishwashing liquid
50% Hydrogen peroxide
Food coloring
Potassium iodide solution
Yeast enzyme

3 Statement of the Problem – Nixon stands

NIXON
Which gives a faster rate to decompose Hydrogen peroxide?
Yeast enzymes or Potassium iodide solution?
Let’s go and find out!

4 Protective Gears

Nixon wears the laboratory gown (or lab gown)

He wears the safety goggles.

5 Procedure of the Experiment

[Captions]
Step1 – We pour 100 mL of 50% Hydrogen peroxide solution to the
Erlenmeyer flasks.
Step 2 – Add 10 mL of dishwashing liquid.
Step 3 – Add the food coloring. Make two set – ups.

We have to do this outside.

Step 4 – Pour the yeast enzymes and Potassium iodide solution to the
corresponding set-ups, simultaneously.

6 Answering the Statement of the Problem.

NIXON [dubbed]
There you have it! Potassium iodide solution is the catalyst that gives
a faster rate to decompose Hydrogen peroxide, more readily than Yeast
enzymes to produce water and oxygen gas.
This is based on the time that the foam has elevated.
The foam produced adds surface tension to trap Oxygen gas.
