DOMESTIC ABUSE DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

Child abuse and intimate relationship abuse are two examples of family violence. However,
family violence may also include a range of different types of physical, sexual, psychological, or
financial abuse that happens inside the home. A variety of causes have been linked to an increase
in family violence during pandemics (Akisheva et al, 2021). Financial difficulty, insecurity as a
consequence of natural disasters, susceptibility to exploitative relationships, and a lack of
resources are some of these issues. Individuals who are presently living in severe domestic
violence circumstances are being compelled to remain at home as a consequence of international
isolation laws put in place to combat the spread of COVID19. Isolation from one's community
raises a person's or group's vulnerability to exploitation while also limiting the number of readily
accessible and pleasant options available to give support. Following a trend seen in previous
cases of social isolation caused by illnesses and pandemics, there has been a rise in the number
of complaints of domestic violence in numerous nations, including Australia, as well as an
increase in the risk for children who are not in school. This is consistent with other examples of
social isolation caused by sickness. When stay-at-home orders were imposed in Australia, the
police recorded a 40% reduction in overall crime, but a 5% rise in calls relating to domestic
violence. During the same time period, the number of persons searching Google for help with
domestic violence in Australia climbed by 75% (Walklate et al., 2022).
